If you take the walking path up the hill, there are many stops with great views over the old town and surrounding seaside.

A must do when you get to Dubrovnik, we got the cable car up and then walked down but plenty of people arriving in taxis to catch the sunset as well. Beautiful view over the islands, we then walked down. Things to note you need to wear trainers as a minimum on the walk down it’s steep and there are lots of loose rocks on the way down. The walk down took approx 40mins taking care as we went. Also there are no lights on the way down so it gets dark very quickly, we had to get a move on towards the ends as it was going dark quickly

A trip to the top of Mt. Sud is an absolute must whether by cable car, taxi or car. We drove up the narrow (one car wide) twisting road in our rental car. At the top, I noticed that the folks who took taxis were more relaxed… However you accomplish the climb the views are absolutely SPECTACULAR!

We took a taxi to the top of this mountain and rode down on the cable car. When you arrive at the peak, there is sparse vegetation in a rocky landscape. Parking is random in a gravel lot. The fortress at the top is from the Napoleonic siege and gives a wonderful view of the city and surrounding areas. The top of the mountain is fairly small and can easily be walked. There are public toilets, a monument to war heroes, a restaurant and, of course, the fort. This was enjoyable but if you are running out of time, it should be on your second list of priorities.

The views are fantastic up here much easier than walking the walls if you think that is going to be to much for you.

We took the cable car to Mount Srd and ate dinner at the restaurant and enjoy Ed the sunset views. It was wonderful. The cost for the ride was reasonable

A great way to get to the Fort and to see the East side of Dubrovnik is to hike up Szlak na Fort (on Google maps). It’s basically in line with Hotel Excelsior but way up at the highway. Make your way up (stairs- many) and there’s an underpass to get to the other side of the highway. A trail of stairs right at the underpass leads you to Bosanka where you hang a left and walk to the Fort. (From hotel excelsior to the fort was a little over an hour but it depends on your stair fitness). Come down the usual trail back to town. - Not for people freaked out by high exposure, although it’s perfectly safe and in good condition.
Bus 17 also goes to Bosanka if you just want to walk to the fort from there.
It was COLD in the damp, unheated museum/fort but warm hiking. I was glad I’d brought extra layers for the museum.

Mount Srd sharply rises above the Old Town of Dubrovnik. From here you are treated to a stunning panoramic view of Dubrovnik.

Fantastic views out over the city and surrounding countryside. I would highly recommend giving yourself at least an hour to go to the museum and watching the archive footage of the effects of the Homeland war on the city and people of Dubrovnik. A do not miss spot on your Dubrovnik visit

We took the cable car up to see the views. It was quick and easy. There was a restaurant up there, we did not go into. It was sunset and our pictures were gorgeous. You can see the Elefati Islands and Lokrum well.

Do you think this will be difficult to walk with a baby in a baby carrier/sling? As obviously a pushchair is out of the question.....

Hi, The path was fine for me just very rocky/uneven in places when i was there but I took my time and it was ok. As others have said it is a gradual incline so not that noticeable. There are also seats at each curve in the path once on the main part so you can rest and take photos. beautiful views ! Also do it early in the day if possible. The first part of the way is shaded by trees and cool however once on the main path there is NO shade at all so be prepared with water ,hat and sunscreen. I ate at the restaurant at the top and didn't think it overly expensive . Food was very good and staff very pleasant .. was able to sit , relax and enjoy the views. Hope this helps. Enjoy
Would a 50cc moped get up the goat path to the summit? Staying in Cavtat next year and want to go up Mount Srd for sunset for some nice photos. Don't fancy driving a hire car up there as it looks pretty tight and the last ferry back from Dubrovnik is at 8pm which kinda rules out the cable car (unless I get a taxi back) so I'm thinking of hiring a moped for a couple of days.
Thanks

Hi there, I personally wouldn't ride a moped up there but if you OK with heights go for it! The roads are pretty rough in places but you might be able to zip past on a moped.

Would it be okay to walk down the mountain after dark? We want to see the sunset from up top and want to hike back down afterwards but don't know if it will be too dark to see where we are walking. We do not have a very powerful flashlight either.

Personally i think it would be dangerous. I think there is a rough path down but wouldnt know whether it was safe in pitch dark as it's quite rocky terrain and high up. I'm sure the cable car would be the safer bet.
Hola Mary,
Cuanto demora el viaje caminando al monte?

I think that the recent running race winning result was under 13 minutes. I can walk up 35 minutes. So a slow walk from the entrance to the top can be done in hour.

are you able to walk up?

We did the walk today (25/07/2018) and I recommend it rather than put people of it. At a relatively slow pace, it took us 90 minutes to walk up and 60 minutes to walk down. It will be quicker if it is not a blistering hot day.
Wear soft shoes and not sandles. Carry a litre of water. Stop to take in the views or to catch your breath.
Other people have talked about taking a bus to where the route starts but we walked from where the cable car starts. The route below is the easiest available to get you to where the walking trail starts.
Walk away from where the cable car starts. You will walking on Zabrebacka Street and you will walking against the flow of traffic. Continue up Zabrebacka Street until you reach the second set of steps going up. You are now at Ivana Mazuranica Street.
Climb the stairs until you reach the main road. Cross at the pedestrian crossing and go up the next set of stairs. This is Od Kriza Street. Halfway up, you will reach a “Y” section. Go left.
When you reach the next road, the entrance to the tunnel will be on your right. Cross the road and go to the stairs in the middle of the road.
Cross the next road and you will at the start of the hiking trail.
Take care and enjoy.
