We passed through the sea gate whilst doing a self-guided walking around the old city area in Kotor on a one day stop in the city on a Thursday in June. The sea gate is not as imposing as some of the other gates in the Kotor City walls in that there are no flanking towers or gatehouse associated with it. However being a small gate in a tall continues wall probably makes it just as defensible.
To the right hand side as you approach, the visitor will find a detailed map of Kotor and we photographed this on a smart phone to help us navigate once inside. Passing through the gateway, the visitor finds themselves in a short tunnel through the city wall which opens out into a small square.

Tuesday 14th June and we visited the Old Town of Kotor on Montenegro's Adriatic coast.

We entered the Old Town through this rather grand gate which is flanked on either side by an old cannon.

There is so much historical significance attached to this gate, which could easily be overlooked. The history is told over a number of layers above the entrance.

It was constructed in 1555 during the time of the Venetian rule (1420 - 1797) and forms part of the Town walls.

On a stone plaque above the arched entrance is the date of 21st November 1944. This is the day that Kotor was liberated from German occupation by the Partisan army led by Tito.

Above the plaque there is a stone ledge on which there is a quotation by Tito. It translates as "what belongs to others we don't want, what is ours we will never surrender”.

On the next layer is is an ornate crest which has the date of 29th November 1943 at its heart. On this day the Anti-Fascist Council for the National Liberation of Yugoslavia declared that Yugoslavia would be “built on a democratic, federal principle” and called the Democratic Federal Yugoslavia.

Also on that day Tito was elevated to the rank of Marshal and named as the head of the provisional Government.

Two years later, on 29 November 1945, King Petar II transferred power to Tito.

Above all this history, three flags fly in front of the walls and the parapet that runs along them.

We debarked our cruise ship and walked maybe 300 yds to this main entrance gate to the old town--very convenient. As you pass thru the gate which is part of the walled fortifications, you enter the Plaza de Arms, the main square of the old city. Perfect starting point to tour this impressive and historically important town.

The main gate and most popular gate in kotor to enter the old city, their is 3 of them.

This was the gate I entered the city through for the first time as the bus dropped me of at the Port, which is only 100 metres from gate entrance.

Gate has significant history to it and has wonderful detail on the gate,

A real treat to see while visiting Kotor.

There are several gates through the walls of Kotor's Old City, but this is the main one and the most commonly used. It leads between the city and the port, with parking nearby, so both cruise passengers and drivers will likely enter this way. The gate is an interesting pink color, and the plaque above it lists the date in 1944 when the city was liberated from Nazi Germany. It leads into the main plaza/Arms Square of the city and from there to the other wonderful sights inside the Old Town.

Important landmark in Kotor and for the Old City. Actually it’s the most popular entrance point into the Old City especially coming from the port of Kotor. So, of course, it’s the most crowded point of entry, especially when the cruise ships docks.

As the name suggests, this is the gate in the city walls that opens onto the port of Kotor. It represents the main entrance to the city and was built in the mid-16th century under Venetian rule. Above the door, the date of the city's liberation was added with a star and a quote from Tito. Crossing the door you notice a stone relief of the Madonna and Child with Saint Tryphon and Saint Bernard on the sides.

The Sea Gate was the main, among the three, entrance gate to Kotor's Old Town. He looks at the city's linen and leads us to Kotor's largest square, that of the Weapons. Its construction dates back to 1555, during the Venetian domination of the city. Above the outer arc of the gate, we see the engraved date of liberation of the city from the Nazi occupation, along with a communist star.
