Having hired a car and driven to Kotor , the option to drive up to see the splendid views and the Njegos Mausoleum was there, but we were offered the opportunity to go by taxi (Red Taxi, driven by Nina) for just €50. We were picked up in Dobrota, and were given a narrative about everything and anything, with the taxi stopping at key viewpoints ( and the driver knew better than us !). The road was narrow in parts, and wound it’s way up through the national park to the mausoleum. After looking around, we then drove down to the village where Petar Petrović Njegoš was born- there is a small unimposing museum there , then on to the next village where we ate and had a look at the market stalls which were selling local ‘specialities’.
Back to Kotor, and the trip had taken us about 6 hours - we saw a lot, learned a lot, and it was incredible value!

The last reviewer explained the situation very well. The hairpin road is very doable and the bends are wide enough for buses to pass any car - and they do! However, once you turn into the entrance of the National Park itself, things deteriorate quickly. The road becomes a dirt track with ruts and holes galore and your way is frequently blocked by diggers, lorries and JCBS. So there is a lot of waiting until you can pass.
The dust that is being disturbed is like a red clay and it will totally cover your car. If you’re unlucky enough to be beside a JCB dumping off a load your visibility will be seriously impaired. We even saw two poor suckers in a convertible, looking like lost members of the Terracotta Army!
We persevered and the last viewing point was in sight - the one where you can walk up to the mausoleum - when our way was blocked once more. We sat there for quite some but it became obvious that it would be an extremely long wait. Ourselves and the cars around us, eventually backed down the road to a lay-by and all got out and made the most of the view there.
We may not have made it the last 100 meters but the view was still spectacular. Truly breathtaking.
We didn’t regret going but I am surprised there were no warning signs at the entrance to the park. Some cars would seriously struggle.
The road down to Cetinje however, is a joy. Obviously freshly completed. I imagine in a year the road through the National Park will be the same. This year though, think carefully. If you are in a small car, it might be worth just getting out at the last lookout point before the park.

To get to this viewpoint, you need to be brave enough to navigate the road known as Kotor Serpentine with its 25 hair pin bends. Beware the road ranks among the most dangerous roads in the world.
For the less adventurous, there's always tour buses available. There is a restaurant available "Kotor Blick" with awesome views for you sit in the open and enjoy a beer or coffee.

The drive up the Kotor/Lovcen Road (also known as the Ladder of Cattaro) is as hairy a drive as you're event likely to have. With 25 tight hairpin turns and drop offs that will scare even the most adventurous driver it is a drive you'll likely never forget. Finding it is a bit of a challenger - look for the sign showing the way to Cetinje on the right about 400m before entering the long tunnel. Do be careful driving up as the road is very narrow and cars/trucks descending travel far too fast. There are a number of pull outs on the way up and when you're at the top you'll get a view of Kotor Bay from the town of Kotor all the way to the Adriatic and beyond.
NOTE: If you're planning on driving through to Cetinje be forewarned that there is construction a few kilometers after getting to the top. You could be held up for more than a half hour and large chunks of the road are gravel only.

You should not miss the view from the mountains to the Bay of Kotor. Even if you have already seen hundreds of photos taken from this place, you cannot imagine how beautiful it is when you stand on the viewpoint and see the entire bay and the mountains that surround it with your own eyes.

Stopped at this point on way back to Kotor from Budva. This is just a viewing spot . No facilities other than a kiosk that sells water & soft drinks. But this point offers one of the best views of magnificent Kotor bay.
Great spot to take some fabulous pictures.

Very beautiful view but could not go to top without paying another (surprise!) fee on top of 5 euro to get into park

It is possible to hike up to this viewpoint from Kotor. The distance between Kotor old town and Restaurant Nevjesta Jadrana on the main road near the village of Žanjev Do (Cetinje municipality) is 7 km. The elevation difference is 900m.
Alternatively you can walk up to the Zip-line station also on the main road. This trail marked Krstac is a bit steeper (elevation difference 940m). It took me 2 hours and 15 minutes to get there from Kotor. I did not take breaks.
I returned to Kotor by the Zanjev Do trail that starts near the Jadrana restaurant.
In Kotor both trails start taking a right after leaving the North gate of Kotor old town and crossing two canals. Some people call it the zigzag trail to the cheese shop and from there onward. It is marked (red-white-red).

We travelled from the Cetinje end of the road having visited the mausoleum in Lovcen National Park.
Not sure that previous reviews have stressed enough the impact of the roadworks on quite a long stretch of the road - 10km or so, we would guess. So, the views are absolutely fantastic, the hairpins are ok even if you do meet cars coming the other way, but if you do have a hire car, be prepared to drive very slowly and manoeuvre your path across the smallest of the ruts in the road. There isn't a proper tarmac surface at all for pretty much all of that distance, and we scraped the bottom of the car on several occasions in between queuing along with other cars waiting for lorries to be loaded with rubble by JCBs to clear the way.
My view is that you shouldn't let this put you off - we made it, after all. You can see from the pictures posted how amazing the views are as well. I'm speaking as the driver of the car, however. When my wife and I discussed whether we'd do it again knowing what the road was like, I said yes, she said no !
By the way, the Mausoleum in Lovcen was well worth a visit and you get to see some great views of practically the whole of Montenegro, especially if you pay the €3 to get to the Mausoleum itself and walk up to the viewing point.

It isn't just the viewing point that is outstanding but the journey up the mountain by road up from Kotor. At each twist and turn the views become more and more impressive. Don't waste your time trying to take photos through the coach window because all coaches stop here for about 5 minutes for photo opportunities. It can be just a little crowded but generally other tourists are polite and I certainly had little problem. After this spectacular view the road from here to Cetinje is a little disappointing and when I visited the roads were being upgraded.

Hi we are staying in Kotor for one night as our son walked to the resturant from Kotor and suggested we took a taxi up and walked down the mountain path. How much is a taxi from Kotor to the restaurant as it seems you did this journey. We have 7 nights in Herceg novi but want to visit Kotor.
Thanks
Christine

Hi Cristine.
I’ve got no idea about the taxi fares in the area, as we used our car to travel around Montenegro.
Sorry I wasn’t too helpful.
Kind regards

Did anyone get there by walking from Kotor? Is the road safe enough to walk to this place? How long did it take?

TAXI ... is it easier to sort a taxi when you are in Kotor than book one in advance? Thank you in advance.
Written 20 March 2018
We used the taxi to return from a nearby restaurant and discussed it with the driver, I think the name of the firm was in my review. It was easy and we couldn’t believe how cheap it was !

Is it possible walking to here? I love walking and I would love to hike up here but in wondering if it's nog to dangerous. Thanks!
Written 24 January 2017
Previous answer is a mistake, it describes the hike to Vrnac instead. Sorry about that. But yes, you can hike up to Lovcen too. It’s not dangerous, sometimes just a bit scary at the last part if you’re afraid of heights, but always doable. Start at the beginning of the ‘ladder of Kotor’ behind the shopping center. Near the top you can do zip-lining, and there’s a restaurant near the start of the national park.
