Although I live in Varna and visited the Stone Forest (Pobiti Kamani) in Bulgarian many times. I can say this is definitely a place you can visit throughout any time of the year including winter. If you go during the day and it's on a weekend you can even buy a guided tour. Still there is a big board next to the entrance where you can read a lot. It is a nice spot also if you like taking photos - imagine a sunrise or sunset there and the wonderful colors you can get!

Stone forest deserves it's name - it really seems like an ancient forest. Large enough area so it's not very crowded even if many cars parked along the roadside or parking lot. Would recommend to visit, when in the area. Don't trust your GPS (Google) when trying to find it. If you are on the main highway, look for the huge signs with tiny name "kameni" on it (written at the lower edge of road signs). Beware of crazy potholes after turning off the main highway. Staff is very friendly, he will give you a brief history, of how the forest was probably formed and will most likely name the type of stone in your national language. Water and othe beverages are availiable.

This place is amazing! Cheap entry free & well worth it.
There are information board inside the shop/ticket booth in a number of languages, and on the back of the tickets are stone symbols correlating to the 'named' rocks (you need to use your imagination for some!) The staff working there are really helpful and spoke about the history & provided some information about the stones.

There is debate about the origin of the stones, but generally accepted that this was some form of ancient sea. It is located in the only desert in Eastern Europe (and one of 2 in Europe overall). There are a number of stones and you have free reign to wander around. Understandably there is zero shade so sun cream & water is pretty essential!

We (group of 4 adults) spent around an hour. One of the party has mobility issues relating to uneven ground & dizziness but found the site fairly accessible, there are some steps & sandy ground/rocks so not suitable for wheelchairs etc.

Worth a visit to see this unique phenomenon, not seen anything similar in the reat of my extensive travels worldwide.

Take a taxi or rent a car and drive 20 mins from Varna, you won’t regret it.
Various and versatile rock formations dating back thousands of years, when the area was covered by water.
Don’t miss the tranquility of the neighboring forest. Priceless.

The site is very interesting. The rock formations vary in size and shape, so there is much to see and enjoy. This is only a short experience and will probably take an hour or two to explore in depth. The entry officer was knowledgable and quite comedic.

Overall, an enjoyable adventure at a reasonable price!

Looking for something to do when you are bored or the weather is not that good for a beach day? Take a trip to this beautiful place and see what Nature can do. Went with my two boys, 10 and 3, and they like it very much. Look for the parking lot, dont stop near the road!

Great site to visit and when we came here didn’t have to pay any entrance fee. Not sure if any difference with season as we came here during winter. If you don’t have guide or information or locals with you. You won’t understand the story behind but a great place to visit for a quick walk.

A very interesting work of nature. We were walking around for about half an hour. There is a lot to see. You walk by the pure sand and watch those stone trees (towers). And there was also a little animal – I think it was an European ground squirrel (souslik). We had a really nice time there.

Beautiful rock formation located in Varna, Bulgaria, on the road between Varna and Sofia. The formations are the result of coral activity, while the latter explain the phenomenon with the prismatic weathering of the rocks, the formation of sand and limestone. In order to be preserved, Pobiti Kamani (The Stone Desert) was designated a natural landmark in the late 1930s.
