    Palace and Paintings
Two large floors of rooms and paintings is alot to take in. In comparison with the other museums, I found this to be expensive at over 50 Lei for an adult. There were alot of dark religious paintings which I do tire of, but then there were some very nice pictures in the Romanian section and Jan Van Eyck's 'Man in a Blue Cap' was captivating. When one thinks that this was painted around 1430, it is quite astonishing. The way Peter Paul Rubens captured light in 'St Franciscus Xaverius' is also outstanding. Well worth the tour for the palace and the paintings.

A museum gem. Must visit when you are in Sibiu.
This is a most extraordinary art museum. A beautiful collection of art from extremely talented Romanian artists as well as a wonderful collection of many well known masters. A very large museum, so go when you have 3 hours. It’s the palace of an exceptional governor of the region who was an exceptional art collector, as well. Don’t miss this museum when you visit Sibiu. We went at 10am and they were closed till noon. So glad we returned!

    Historic building, nice collection
This museum is worth a visit since it combines the surroundings of the Bruckenthal family mansion (with much of the original furniture), art works and a beautiful garden. There’s also a lapidary collection: fragments of grave stones and stone carvings from buildings dating back to the 16th century. The paintings are mostly religious themes or pictures of the family; other paintings include some of the Old Masters such as Cranach and Titian.

I arrived at the door of the Brukental National Museum at 5.15 PM (the closing hour is 6.00 PM). The guard informed me that the ticket office was already closed and sent me to the adjacent Catholic Church...
As a matter of fact, I discovered that in this museum, the last entrance is forty-five minutes before the closing hour, 5.15 PM, exactly the hour I arrived...
Almost everywhere is 30 minutes before, because it gives to the visitor the minimum time to take a look at two or three pieces that he is interested (not all the museum necessarily); the Louvre is an exception, the last entrance is 1 hour before the closing time, but this museum has, according the guidebooks, just one interesting stage with three or four excellent European paintings.
Another schedule exception to the almost general rule: the Brukental museum is closed not just on Mondays, but also on Tuesdays (like the National Museum of Art in Bucharest).
So be very careful with the exotic schedules of the Romanian museums in general. Some are only open from Thursdays to Sundays...

The staff ranged from rude to outright hostile. We went to see the Romanian art gallery which the website said cost 19 leu, but ended up spending over 100 leu per person as they kept telling us we didn't have tickets (we had multiple copies of tickets to everything but thought paying the extra money was worth it so they would stop harassing us). The European art collection is very underwhelming and the Romanian art collection was very small. Definitely skip this as there are better and friendlier places to see in Sibiu.

A must see for any art enthusiast while visiting Sibiu, a beautiful large art gallery, one of the best if not the best in Romania.

During the past one year I visited twice the place. Is in a relatively fair condition, thou a lot of restoration needed. The collection is centered around a dozen of masterpieces of international fame. These are basically on the second floor. The interior is also notable. However, if you wish to take your own pictures you have to pay per hour an exorbitant amount of around 35 EUR ! (during winter 2021-22 it was only around 25 EUR !) For this establishment which you can visit in 3 hours, is totally inacceptable, mostly if you compare this with museums of world fame, like Louvre, where you pay nothing and you need a week to visit it thoroughly. Yes, entrance price is slightly different, but still....On top of all, the museum did not issue a booklet about the museum, as it is a habit in all major art museums, where the most important pieces are presented and what you can buy at exit.

The Museum of Sibiu - the Samuel von Brukenthal National Museum in Sibiu ... It houses fine arts - that section we skipped this time - we've visited that part of the museum several times between 2006 and 2017 ... maybe next time when we are in Sibiu we will revisit that.
This time we picked 3 exhibits - 1 Goya and Dali sketches ... well I was familiar a bit with the art of Dali ...strange, twisted, expressive and surprising (not easy to understand at all - for me at least). - Goya was new to me , but more digestible and likeable- have to say.
Than we went to a photo exhibit - "Following the footsteps of Darwin" a picture expo about evolution of species and the Galapagos islands. Very interesting.
And the close it up - contemporary painting ... there I was really lost ... interesting perspectives ... but have to say not really my kind of art.
Overall we spent about 2-2,5 hours , in a great place - and since the admission fee is a real bargain I recommend you go and check it out when you are in Sibiu ...
