Visited this Pagoda as part of an excellent days sight seeing with Starskey & Hutch Taxi service. The Pagoda is not the most impressive from the outside and has a long corridor of gift shops as you enter. The outstanding highlight is the massive Gold Buddah statue which wealthy local worshippers constantly adorn with coatings of gold leaf which the temple sells. Not quite sure how this fits into Buddhist teaching but it is interesting to watch.

The Maha Myat Muni Pagoda - Mahamuni Buddha temple is very impressive. It is coated with gold leaf. The Idol of Buddha is also gold coated. Women are not allowed into the last cauldron before the idol.

The pagoda has an unusual shape - square at the base. The central figure of the Buddha is gradually deformed due to the desire of pilgrims to add their piece of gold to the statue. There are also several statues with their own - medical - properties.

There is quite a bit of history to the Buddha image, and also a separate tiny museum houses several bronze statues looted from Angkor Wat in the 15th century. It's recommended that you do some research before you come to get a proper idea of what's going on, or have a knowledgeable guide with you, as not much English signage is available. The main Buddha image is supposedly a literal living duplicate of the living Buddha, and is so encrusted on the lower parts of its body with gold leaf that it is starting to lose its shape. Only male devotees are allowed to approach the statue (through a metal detector gate).

A large market arcade lies between the pagoda and the entrance, selling tourist goods and religious items. As always, visitors are expected to have conservative dress and be barefooted upon entry.

It’s a temple, how does one rate such a place? As temples go, it is very popular, perhaps the most popular in town. I found the temple grounds to be small, it is not a big place, but the entrances (there are 4) to the pagoda, the gold covering the statue of Buddha, and the number of adherents here, does indicate great reverence. The entrance hall ways have many different shops selling religious souvenirs. There is a small museum on the grounds showing how the statue was brought to this location by the king. The statue itself is not so easily seen as it sits within a small room and adherents are only allowed to view the statue from the outside of the room, looking in. I have seen grander Buddhas and bigger temples, but again, this place is important to the city which is why it is visited.

This is a really important pagoda. It prays to the Buddha and has an ancient statue with their counterparts being in India. The statue was cast in the Arakan kingdom during the Buddhas lifetime and blessed and consecrated by Him and that adds to its divinity. the statue was shifted to Mandalay after Arakan lost its place. There is a monastery near the pagoda and lots of kiosks on the path to it though there are nice green lawns too.
The main bronze image of over 3 meters has a ritual that male devotees can apply thin gold leaf on its face and this makes the statue become thicker and slightly misshaped too
An amazing place to go to

The Buddha temple with local's adding golf leaf is stunning, males can go through security to get a close up to photo, the locals are praying around you. After the temple, you have the Pagoda, Jade animal sculptures, a hall with Buddha paintings which are superb, market stalls selling beautiful items, the whole area is well worth a visit.
