About
This charming community farm just outside of Luang Prabang overlooks wonderful Rice Fields and Mountains. Rice is planted all year round and they welcome guests who want to learn about Rice planting and other farm activities like bamboo weaving, sugar cane pressing, black smithing. Visitors get to try most of the activities or can just watch. Rodolphe and Susan, the two buffaloes help with the ploughing of the rice paddies and guests can have a go too. The half day programme starts at 08.30 and finishes with a tasting of rice based snacks. The farm is shared by 9 families who also grow organic vegetables and flowers. Lunch is available too and includes a selection of typical Luang Prabang dishes and fruit. Proceeds from the Rice Experience go to supporting over 60 students with their studies and they operate free English classes for the whole village. They have a small Homestay unit made from an old granary. Booking is necessary and pick-up and return by tuk-tuk is included.

- Snipsy47264 contributionsFantasticSpent a wonderful morning learning about rice production - a hands on experience getting very muddy in rice paddy! The young man describing all the procedures was so helpful and also spoke excellent English. Easy to book on line - a tuk tuk will collect you from your hotel, free of charge. Recommend you stay to lunch. We never realised all the hard work that goes in to rice production. Highly recommend this experience.Visited November 2022Written 18 December 2022
- Karl5 contributionsA MUST DO IN LUANG PRABANGThe tour was very educational and it was so much fun being able to participate in how they used to farm rice. We learnt a lot not just about how they farm but also the culture. We went as a couple and would recommend to go even if you are going as a solo or as a family.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 December 2022
- AmyLee65Livingston, New Jersey9 contributionsHighly recommend. Educational and fun. What a wonderful experience. We learned about the traditional way rice is harvested and prepared. The fun part was the hands on experience of wading in the rice patty to plant the seeds. Some of the members of our group (the men) also drove the water buffalo. Our guide was very charming and spoke English extremely well.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 January 2023
- Jonathan KPrinceton, New Jersey512 contributionsFun and interestingThis is a very interesting and well-conceived tour. Our guide was personable and informative and spoke English well. You are taken through every step of rice growing, from germination through threshing through the forging of tools for harvesting. Unless you are on a very tight budget I would recommend shelling out a bit extra for the lunch, which was bounteous and tasty. They provide water and a hat, but do bring sunscreen. And do be prepared for the somewhat disconcerting sensation of being immersed up to mid-calf in sucking mud at the very beginning of the tour.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 February 2023
- Sam28 contributionsAn excellent day with wonderful people. What more could you ask for!The Living Land rice experience was excellent! It was super fun learning all about the rice farming process and getting hands on with the excellent, friendly presenter, Kham. An experience to treasure! The lunch was also delcious, would highly recommend. Kham then invited us to stay after the experience to play petanque and have beers with the staff. A truly wonderful experience that I'll remember forever. A true highlight!Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 February 2023

- MarkVictoria, Canada6 contributionsExcellent experience! Fun, educational and great value! This was a highlight for our family of 4. Our kids are 10 and 13, and we all absolutely loved our experience. We rented motor scooters from Luang Prabang, and shuttled ourselves to the farm in 15 minutes. We skipped the lunch and did the tour only, but part of the tour was making and tasting sugar cane juice and sticky rice prepared 4 different ways. Den, our guide, was sensational, spoke excellent english, and had a great sense of humour. I had no idea how rice was farmed, and this was eye opening and a lot of fun! Wear flip flops and clothes you can get muddy!Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 7 March 2023
- Gabriela B1 contributionHighly recommendOne of the best experiences we ever had! We strongly recommend to opt for this tour. We did a SE Asia tour but only at The Living Land in Laos we found this great opportunity to learn about the rice cultivation and harvesting. The tour is very well-designed with one being able to get information about the whole process of rice farming, and being able to practice evey step of the process. It's a hands-on experience. Our guide did a wonderful job in explaining, showing patience and encouraging questions. He also helped us with taking pictures 😉 His English was very good and fluent - he revealed that the Farm supported him to get higher education, since in Laos it's not free.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 March 2023

I wanted to know how rice is grown and I’ve now had the experience first hand… choosing the right grains as seed; planting the seeds; spacing the seedlings; plowing; harvesting; thrashing; etc.
Also included an amazing lunch.
Highly recommend.

A wonderful way to learn how rice is grown. You are taken to a rice field set in spectacular scenery just outside town and you yourself will be asked to get dirty in a paddy and learn how the product is cultivated, picked and processed. At the end of a most interesting tour that helps the local community you get to eat some of the rice grown in the area. This Living Land tour is a memorable way to spend three hours or so in this captivating area. It’s all for a good cause too.

The 'Rice Experience' was a really fantastic and interesting experience, to see what it takes to get rice for eating. Our guide explained every step and could answer all our questions.
The Living Land Company is doing so much for the local community! Among many other things, there is a daily free English lesson for kids.

This tour is a must-do! We had an incredible time experiencing how rice is made, from plowing the field with the water buffalo, to planting, to harvesting, to separating the rice from husk, to cooking. I have a much greater appreciation for the rice growing process now. We also had a lovely lunch. The staff was friendly and spoke English well.

Absolutely incredible, once in a lifetime experience. Expert guide who led us thru the entire rice planting, rice harvesting and rice preparation process. Walked thru muddy rice paddies, plowed fields with water buffalo, thrashed and ground rice seeds, pressed sugarcane into a refreshing drink, and then enjoyed a delicious meal on the patio overlooking the fields & nearby mountains. We will never forget our day at Living Land Farms!

One of the best things we've done in SE Asia. So interesting learning about the different stages of growing rice - we will never look at it in the same way again! The tour was super hands on with each person in the group getting to have a go at each different step, and our tour guide Den was very knowledgeable, super funny and spoke perfect English. An awesome community enterprise to support, and a really fun day out.

At first, we called Living Land Farm for a reservation in the Rice Experience (3 hours of learning about the proccess of growing rice). During this call, we were informed that they had one homestay where we could spend the night. So, after the Rice Experience, we would have the chance to visit the little village (near thr farm), play games with the people from the farm and, well, see their way of life.
After this conversation, we decided to stay in the farm and couldn't have made a better choice! The Homestay itself is simple, with one bed, one fan and external bathroom, but nice and neat, perfectly located in front of the rice field.
LOUIS, the manager, is such a gentleman and helped with everything for our reservation.
NEUK, our guide in the rice field, was very nice, pacient and answered all of our questions. Such a candid and peaceful man!
CAN led us through the village, showing us everything. In our way, Laotion people invited us for beers and eateries, because we were lucky enough to have been there during Woman's Day (they comemorate the day in Laos). CAN spoke perfect english and made us feel welcome and at home. He is an awesome guy, which we hope to meet again while in Luang Prabang or later in life.
In the late afternoon, we played petanque with CAN and other people from the farm. We had such a nice time!
Also, we were lucky, since in that same day the villagers were celebrating the end of the construction of one part of the temple where the monks would stay. So, in the night, we went to the temple with CAN, his wife and his cute little baby girl (the cutest in Laos!), also with SÁ (great and funny guy, that, although didn't speak perfect english yet, tried to teach us all the necessary words in Lao language), where we had such a blast and could see the real laotion way of life.
It was, hands down, the best experience we could have asked with real people in a real place. Thanks Living Land Farm for making it possible!
A MUST GO EXPERIENCE!
PS - I'm sorry if the names are misspelled, but the feeling is real ;)

We are planning to do this activity on 12th Dec 2017 with our 7 yr old son. Can anyone let me know what kids get to do here? I do not see kids that young in any picture. Also, what is the best way to book it? The living land farm's website is not operational. I can see it listed on backstreetacademy...
Also, I see everyone wearing same hat in the pictures.. does that cute hat come with the booking? :)
Thanks in advance :)

Hello. Yes, the hat is a loaner. If you want one as a souvenir you can readily buy one in town. Kids will love it. There were two in my group - a little younger than your son. They participated in each of the activities - well, except for plow the paddy behind Rudolph, the water buffalo. I booked directly via email. I am sure your hotel can arrange a booking with a day or two notice. I doubt there is a limit on the number of participants. The morning that I was there, they divided the guests into two groups. That way everyone had an opportunity to be hands-on. And, I strongly suggest you all get into it. Of al the photos taken on my journey, those from the rice farm are the most popular with my friends.

Hi,would it be possible to visit The living land Company but just to watch and have oral explanations regarding the work done in it but without taking part of workshop. As we are a group of 7 people containing young kids and older who wouldn't really enjoy an too much immersive experience or spend too long time, we would only be gently initiated.
Another question is what happen the rainy days?
Thanks a lot

Would recommend you avoid it if you just want to just observe. Reason: you are taken into the fields with a lot of slush and mud around you, with thin and slippery paths, something that can make you slip. And with kids, such area could be a no-go. The whole tour shows 13-14 processes and at least 6-7 of them (and most fun) are the ones in the rice paddy. Hope this helps.
To Whom It May Concern:
My wife and I are traveling to Luang Prabang from July 24 - July 26. We would very much like to visit the Living Land Company while there. I noticed that your website seems to be hacked. I am unable to get information as to your hours, admission fees, transportation, and general activities provided on site. Would you be so kind as to give me this information via email. We will be staying in the Lakhangthong Boutique Hotel and wanted any suggestions about transportation to and from the Living Land Company.
Much appreciated
