In the historic district, the Abra Dock in Bur Dubai, is an affordable 10-minute traditonal wooden boat ride -- really a taxi. Take the abra from the Bastakiya side, look around the textile souk and the art galleries, and end in the gold souk. Used by 15-20 million passengers each year, the Abra Dock in Bur Dubai is a memorable cruise in the water.

I cannot understand that the various, boring malls with their mix of identical chain stores and U.S. restaurants are considered the prime attractions of Dubai. The 'abras', the water taxis are! They cross Al Khor (the creek) from Bur Dubai (scenic Indian/Pakistani neighborhoods, textile souk) to Deira (Gold Souk, Spice Market) for the ridiculously low amount of 1 Dirham per... More

Great easy way to go from one side of Dubai to the other-especially if you plan on visiting the souq-gives you a chance to explore the old Dubai

Whats better than not being stuck in the traffic and you can casually cross the bridge in this traditional Abra boat for 1 aed. Please tell me if there is something better! Would be nice if there were more stops.

This is an amazingly cheap way to get from bur Dubai to Deira. We stayed at the Arabian courtyard hotel in Bur Dubai and the Abra dock was 2 to 3 minutes walk away. The fare of 1 dirham and the speed and convenience made this the ideal way of getting to the shopping area of the gold souk and... More

Experiences like these are what I love about places. A 5 minute boat ride from one side of Bur Dubai to Gold Souk in an abra. I think we paid just 1 Dirham per person. The real traditional sight and sound of Dubai. In fact do not waste money on the over hyped & super expensive Dubai Dhow cruise.

Well worth a trip. Only 1AED, you get on, the boatman walks round collecting the money or taps share on the central part of the boat, then you all hand him your money! Best to have the correct coin but they will give change. Great to be part of Dubai Creek life, watch the world go by and sit there... More

I was happy to see that there's still something left of the old Dubai. You should miss the opportunity to cross the creek for a bargain. If you come from Dubai Mall, then take the red metro line to Khalid Bin al Waleed station and change to the green line. Stop at Al Ghubaiba and walks the short distance to... More

Great way to travel to the Souks. Kids loved the boat ride and the Souks themselves are well worth a visit.

Staying in The Creek

Neighbourhood Profile
The Creek
The smell of frankincense hangs thick and heavy in the air, waves lap gently at jetties, and market traders call to passing tourists. The creek, originally the place where pearl boats docked and left on missions to uncover jewels from the deep, is where the city really began. The Al Fahidi District on the Creekside is one of the oldest heritage sites in Dubai, easily recognizable with its iconic wind towers, the original air conditioning. Home to the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding and the Dubai Museum, the old buildings also house a range of cafes, shops and art galleries. Often called “the real Dubai,” this is a wonderful place to lose yourself before catching an abra across the creek to the spice souk, where your senses will be overwhelmed with tastes, smells, and sounds.
