i came here with my husband one morning after we visited the Jumeirah mosque - and i expected a fun, authentic experience. Actually, as soon as i got off the taxi, i realised this trip was not going to be much fun at all. street sellers were EVERYWHERE, and kept on saying they could show me some random chanel/ prada... Was looking forward to visit the old quarter, the Gold Souk and the Spice Souk, it was the disappointment of the 6 week holiday. It had way too many hawkers, there was no appeal or charm. It was very dirty and the laneways looked very dodgy. Yes, there is plenty of bling and over the top gold necklaces. Spend the... More

Personally I am not a gold lover nor expert, this is simply a concentration of modern jewellers and you would only buy here if you knew what you were doing. Yes I did get a couple of nice photos of the traditional long Arab necklaces, but that was it. Thanks for the vote if you found this review helpful.

Much like any souk around the world, hot, dirty and full of street sellers that pester constantly. You can't even browse without being hounded. I understand that many souks are like this but having had a good experience in previous years in Marrakech.

I am not that much into jewelry, but going to the gold Souk in Deira is well worth a visit! Once inside the Souk you will be approached by people wanting to sell you knock offs and pashminas. Once you say no they leave you alone and they are kind about it. It's inside all those little stores that you... More

Frankly I am not keen on buying any gold, fake Rolex or whatever they have got on sale here. What makes it worse is they don't display any prices. There must hundreds of gold shops here with lots of gold jewelry items on display and for sale. You get acousted by others trying to sell you fake Rolex and all... More

This is a MUST DO place to go when visiting Dubai. American dollars or credit cards will suffice..The more you buy the better the bargaining power. Most times you can end up paying around half the asking price. Sometimes the trick to close a deal after hard bargaining, is to start walking towards the door, there is usually a flurry of... More

Not really sure what I was expecting, but the number of "buy a watch, Rolex, genuine" sellers was frustrating. Lots of gold shops but no prices on display, so you have to interact with the owners which I wasn't keen to do. Didn't really want to show interest and then get accosted.

Depending on how much you can stand the yellow metal, this is great just to see the kind of designs that one makes in gold. Some astounding to outright garish stuff are on display. May not be a great place to buy things, but if you enjoy the feel of looking around, it is well worth the trouble. Mind you,... More

Staying in The Creek

Neighbourhood Profile
The Creek
The smell of frankincense hangs thick and heavy in the air, waves lap gently at jetties, and market traders call to passing tourists. The creek, originally the place where pearl boats docked and left on missions to uncover jewels from the deep, is where the city really began. The Al Fahidi District on the Creekside is one of the oldest heritage sites in Dubai, easily recognizable with its iconic wind towers, the original air conditioning. Home to the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding and the Dubai Museum, the old buildings also house a range of cafes, shops and art galleries. Often called “the real Dubai,” this is a wonderful place to lose yourself before catching an abra across the creek to the spice souk, where your senses will be overwhelmed with tastes, smells, and sounds.
