A small central square for a city of 240,000 people, but with great historical significance as the 25th of May 1809 the bell of the adjacent cathedral rang to start the movement of independence from colonial Spain. Have a look at the statue of Antonio José de Sucre. He does not look like a rebel, but he certainly was one.... More

Plaza 25 Mayo is the main square in Sucre, and is the spiritual heart of the city. Most of the main attractions in the city and restaurants are either next to the plaza, or nearby. The notable exceptions are the cemetery and La Recoleta. As a place to people-watch, the plaza is perfect, as locals (from young to old) sit... More

The nicest square in Sucre, with lots of places to sit and watch the world go by. Beautiful architecture and historic buildings around the square, and a number of cafes to visit too. Don't miss the Liberty museum which is on the square.

It is a really busy square. It is a meeting place, an outdoor living room. We crossed it several times and more than once sat for a while and watched the world go by. If you are interested in a trip across Southern Bolivia see our not for profit blog havecarryonwilltravel.com. The locals met friends, entertained their kids, daydreamed and... More

A typical colonial square but very active during the weekends with lots of entertainment. Not a destination but a pleasant place to spend and hour or so.

It is fun to see how many people old and young hang out at the square in the late afternoon and early evening. The surrounding buildings ooze history. We would have an afternoon beer on the la plaza hotel balcony and watch the world go by which seems to be the main activity here.
