One of the better 'second tier' temples in Angkor
We were surprised this temple is not more highly rated in the Angkor site. It is a medium size, and in a ruinous state so it is fun to explore its various nooks and crannies. particularly as there are less visitors here. Takes about 30-45 mins to walk through. Would do on day 2 or 3 of a visit to Angkor.

    Hidden gem
Banteay Kdei is a stunning small temple located near Srah Srang and Ta Prohm in Siem Reap. It is often overlooked by tourists, making it a peaceful and beautiful spot to visit. The temple is a must-see for its photogenic beauty and unique architecture. Exploring Banteay Kdei should only take about an hour, but the experience is truly unforgettable. Cambodia's temples are truly one of a kind and Banteay Kdei is no exception. Don't miss out on the opportunity to explore this hidden gem.

    Little visited. Worth it
The Banteay kdei temple is located in the Angkor archaeological complex but it is not one of the most famous. That is why it is little visited. Good thing. It is a beautiful temple, although in poor condition. Consisting of multiple rooms, it is very long and not very wide. As it is not very visited, it can be enjoyed calmly. If you have time it's worth visiting

The plants that have fallen on the walls have not caused as much damage to the walls as is the case at Ta Prohm, but these building elements also show major damage in many places, which is probably due to age.

However, these phenomena also give the entire complex a flair that should not be underestimated. This gives this complex a touch of primalness and transience. This in turn conveys the existence of a state that is rather eerie and even avoidable for a resident of a world dominated by industry and technology.

In fact, the number of visitors to Banteay Kdei is - comparatively - modest. We were very pleased about this, as we were able to walk through the labyrinth-like state of the complex and examine remarkable representations in peace and quiet.

Your attention is drawn even before you enter the complex. The reason: A gopuram with 4 heads makes an impressive impression at the entrance and after walking through this magnificent building, the view opens up onto a wide path lined with trees like an avenue, which is occasionally interrupted by individual sacred objects.
These buildings, often standing on a plateau, are already decorated inside and out with figures, reliefs and other objects - often a Shiva lingam - and entice visitors to visit.
When you reach the actual sanctuary, a unique view opens up to the visitor. From there, a corridor begins that, from the holy of holies (the Garbha griha - here a Shiva lingam), loses itself over a long distance, breaking through several building walls, into infinity and timelessness. The small number of visitors allowed us to have this view for a moment.

We were here at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and the place was deserted. There were 5 other tourists the whole time and we were so spread out, it felt like we had the place all to ourselves. I liked this temple complex. Interesting and photogenic. Some efforts have been made to restore it but on the whole, it has largely been left as it was found. It’s not a “must see” but if you have the time, it’s definitely worth the visit.

This temple, constructed from late 12th to early 13th century, is a kind of smaller version of Ta Prohm. Both these temples were decided to be left as found by the French. This caused much work to prevent the djungle to destroy more of the temples.
If you have seen Ta Prohm and are running out of time then you can skip this temple. 😉

Our first afternoon in Cambodia and we were taken to the very quiet Banteay Kdei temple. The vast blocks of stone give it great majesty..Our guide from about Asia tours gave us a very informative talk about its history.Whilst there we were asked by some students if we would take part in their survey.Happy to do so and we said perhaps a little information could be displayed somewhere to tell people this places history. The temple needs funding for continued rescue work.Flat shoes needed to climb up,around and over big stones but very enjoyable first outing.

We combined a visit to this site with a visit to Angkor Wat which is nearby.

One of my favourite temples, mainly because it is a lot quiter than the more popular sites.

However, it still involves a long walk, which was a problem for my partner who struggles walking long distances. There seems no provision for disabled visitors

We were coming around 3 p.m. as last temple in our small circuit list. Having rented Tuk Tuk for whole day was definitely good idea 👍. Anyhow we walked more than 10km and added another 20km on small vehicle. Temple was almost empty, few people. I was already tired after seeing so many temples since morning. Each one is unique and different

This temple didn’t have the wonder but awe of Angkor Wat but had a sense of peace. It is in a quieter area of the archaeological park and you can hear birds and nature, rather than people chatting. I would recommend adding this temple into your itinerary.

A beautiful temple that is starting to decay. Architectural stunning, not a straight line in sight and free from crowds. Perfect to stroll around and admire the beauty and serenity. Well worth a visit.
