Fabulous “WOW”
We came to Siem Reap for the 1st time 8 years ago and didn’t fall in love with the food then. Well, that all changed when we came back in 2022 and made the decision to try a Foodies tour operated by Angkor Street Eats. About the Food; We were met at our Hotel by 2 of the Angkor Street Eats team and chauffeured through the lanes ways & streets of Siem Reap in an exclusive Tuk Tuk to several local restaurants serving the pick of local Khmer food, and yes the final restaurant destination, besides offering more traditional BBQ meats also introduced us to what most people want to see but not all are game to eat the local grasshoppers, spiders & scorpions etc. admittedly I had attempted these on our previous trip but didn’t enjoy the taste of the Pub street vendors offerings. I now know that they can be quite tasty when served up by a local restaurant. About the tour Staff; Wow Wow & Wow, we were joined at each restaurant by a third tour guide and together the team introduced us to all different local foods with full explanations of the ingredients & tastes as well as meeting the restaurant staff. It was a fabulous way to see the town, eat with real locals, be able to have a lot of laughter as well as hold interesting conversations with brilliant English speaking Khmer guides. I would recommend that anyone visiting Siem Reap do this on their 1st night instead of falling into the trap of the normal tourist restaurants offering Pizza and the like.

Taking the tour with my teenage son was one of the best decisions made during our visit to Cambodia! We were picked up by our tour guide Phat and a Tuk Tuk driver at our hotel and brought to the first eating spot, where a variety of delicious local cambodian dishes already awaited us. The second spot brought the first challenge in form of balut eggs. I never imagined that I would try them but thanks to Phat I did, even my son tried them. And it’s all about new eating experiences! After a nice little stroll through a buddhist monastery we had a third stop next to the river and the fourth stop included the famous insect eating experience with water bugs, frogs, snails, silkworms, tarantula and the lot. We tried it all and are very proud of ourselves 😉 But the whole tour would have only been half as good without our brilliant guide Phat! I can’t compliment him highly enough! He made the tour so special and interesting, we learned so much not only about the food but also about the people and the culture, it was like a great night out with a friend! The tour is not cheap, but it was worth every single dollar and I would highly recommend anyone visiting this beautiful country to book this tour!

Hi Alexa,
It was great having you both on our tour. You should both be very proud of trying the insects. And yes, we can't agree with you more, we love Phat as well.

We had a group of 12 people so it was sufficient size for a private tour. We did the night market tour.
Pros: Well planned/executed itinerary & menu, the tour company arranged 3 tuk tuks to transport our group for the whole night, the tour clearly had relationships/communicated with the food vendors (as they were mostly prepared for our group's arrival in terms of food and seats), there were A LOT of stops with A LOT of food at each stop, the tour guide was very pleasant.
Cons: Too much food waste (context: our group is from Hong Kong and we can EAT. ALOT. The food was all REALLY delicious, but the amount provided was really just too much, even for us with our eating background. We would have been very happy to get 50% of what was provided. Given the economy and history of Cambodia, we felt doubly bad about wasting half the food). There is no need for each person to have their own complete bowl/plate of something - for food tour, people generally want just a taste (1-2 bites), so it would be perfectly acceptable for 2-3 people to share one portion; that way they won't be too full for the next stop. This is one of the more expensive food tours in Siem Reap, but for the quality it was worth it (although, if they provided half the food portions, they could also lower the price and be more competitive and get more business?)
Overall, I felt this tour provided a lot of value for what we paid (although expensive by Cambodia standards), and the quality was very high. I would highly recommend it!

I have to start by saying that my wife and I love food tours. Every city we go to the first thing we do off the plane is a food tour to taste the local food and meet other like minded food lovers that know how to enjoy new food as well. The only reason we considered this tour was because we saw a few YouTuber vlog about it and it looked amazing. The cost of the food tour is on the expensive end at $70 per person. Even though it was expensive for a food tour, especially for south east Asia, we were in it for the experience. All the places we went to looked like a cheaper version from what we saw in the the YouTube video. I know food tours change depending on the season, but I guess we were hoping to try the Amok wrapped in banana leaf and the noodle soup that we saw in the video. I still got to try many other dishes, so I won’t complain about the food anymore. All the food was still great, but I was just coming into the tour with high expectations since watching the tour on YouTube.
What really made it not a great experience for us was our guide. He was not that informative and lack of passion about the food when giving the tour. We found us constantly trying to talk to him to avoid the uncomfortable silence. Ohh, forgot to mention that the tour was only my wife and I. What was even more sad was the same tour company “Angkor street eats” from another guide was giving a tour near us and the other group was having a great time with their guide. Us watching how engaging the other guide was and how much fun the other group was having and then we turned back to my guide and I can hear the crickets chirping and mosquitos buzzing around me. For a moment watching the other group having a great time made us forget about the mosquitos feasting on our legs as we eat...lol
If you take this tour I hope you get the other guide. In my opinion, I don’t think $140 for my wife and I was worth what we got.

Our guide’s name was Phat, and he was incredibly hospitable. Our first stop was at his sister’s restaurant where we were met with a table full of dishes. He was very helpful in explaining how to eat each dish, as well as the origin of many of our snacks. Additionally, we learned a lot of history with some local color added. It was awesome to hear history from his perspective.
The food was fantastic across the board. Many of the dishes were ones I wouldn’t have known to order on our own, but that’s the point of a food tour. At the end of the night, there is also a variety of bugs to try if you’re extra adventurous.
You should take this tour and book with Phat. His charming personality and unique story telling truly made this tour special.

This was a great evening - Phat is a great guide with a fascinating life and loads of information on the history of the region. Plus amazing food in a great city! The final stop, fried tarantula, was too much for me and I could barely stay at the table, but to my astonishment my children are much more brave than me and tried scorpion, crickets, tarantula. They had so much fun!

If you choose this tour (which you should) you must ask for Phat. We were lucky enough to get a private tour with him and it was an unforgettable experience. You will understand how the food is relevant to their culture because he will explain each and every dish. Some food may even be out of your comfort zone! Phat will also tell you stories that will take your breath away and give you a different perspective on Siem reap.

This tour was the highlight of our cultural experience in Siem Reap. Phat and his colleagues offered us a great tour, and the time spent together gave us not only a taste of extremely diverse and tasty Cambodian foods, but also a feel for the kindness, hospitality, fighting spirit and resilience of the people who cook them. The food tour offers something for everyone, catering to both traditional and exotic tastes. Every dish was served with a side of history and Phat offered us a truly amazing experience.

We had a great tour with our tour guide Sophat. We tried so many different times of Cambodian food and it was such and experience. Sophat was very informative and we learned so much about Cambodian food as well as Cambodian history. My husband enjoys eating exotic foods when we visit different countries. During our street eats tour, he was able to try tarantula wine, eat insects, as well as duck with duck blood. We highly suggest this food tour. There was so much food that we were stuffed by the end of it all.

We had an evening tour with Phat of Angkor Street Eats.
It was such a great experience to see local life, go to places where the locals eat, and taste what they eat (delicious).
Phat was wonderful (!), he has a very special and moving personal history that he was willing to share (for which we thank him). An impressive man.
It was a very special evening and if we would have spare time we would also take a morning tour. I highly recommend a tour with Phat.
