- RamadamaNew Providence, New Jersey2,909 contributionsWonderful museumWe really enjoyed the museum. It's amazing to think 60 sailors lived there for 2 years with no heat, bathroom or light, and they cooked on the main deck. It's wonderful to try to imagine life on that boat while seeing what it actually looked like. Then you can walk over to see the Beagle that Darwin sailed on exploring the region.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 November 2023
- michele AGreater Melbourne, Australia15 contributionsFor ship-lovers anywhere. The replica ships were incredible. I couldn't imagine traveling in the Victoria in 1520. Only 18 survived. Nor could I imagine traveling in the Beagle for 3 years in the 1830's (albeit a lot more roomy and comfortable than Magellan's ship). It really bring home just how courageous those men were - and we whinge when the air conditioning is turned up too high !!! Worth the visit. It's about 14 km out of town but well worth the taxi ride. We spent over two hours there. Great interpretation panels in English and Spanish.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 2 December 2023
- Happiness2273047 contributionsExcellent information about the history of explorers and their boats. The boats on view are a bit rustic but very impressive. The most astounding thing about this small museum was the information boards in both English and Spanish. There was well researched and well set out information about the boats, the explorers and the history around them; expect to spend more than a couple of hours to get the most out of this museum.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 January 2024

Three ships to walk around in that are full size replicas of the ones used by the different discoverers. Interesting to read the history and walk around the ships and try to imagine how those people on the ships survived. About an hour and half tour.

Very interesting exhibition displaying the replicas of several vessels that represent landmarks in local as well as world’s history. Every vessel looks very authentic and the owner/builder was there to answer questions. The only suggestion would be for the addition of more well-kept details inside each ship. In need for a little more maintenance

A fantastic insight into the life of explorers and crew back in the 1500s. Full sized replica of Magellan's ship as well as one of (more recent) HMS Beagle. Crawl in/around/over and get a real sense of conditions in those times - accentuated by being in May on the Straits of Magellan to reinforce how lousy the weather conditions can be.
Just wandered around - plenty of information on boards around the ships - Best 5000 pesos I've ever spent !
Access by car, taxi, colectivos ( I think), or local bus to the hospital and a 2.5 km walk.
Thoroughly recommended.

Humbling given size of ships/boat.
We never found an office to pay.
Taxi took us there for $6000 peso, stayed for 30mins for us and charged $3000. Then dropped us off at Ancud memorial for walk back past Shackleton memorial statue. Lots of imperial Cormorants. Worthwhile trip and only an hour or so in total.

Came as part of the tour. Very much enjoyed it! I would recommend anyone with an interest to boat and to history to stop by and visit. It’s more like a private self built one to one replica demonstration than a museum. The one star deduction is due to the museum is pretty small and unless you are interested in the four boats and their history there are not much else to do. Price is 5000 clp or 7 usd when I visited

There are 3 reproduction ships here and all different to each other. They are beautifully made and it was great fun walking around, exploring them. There are boards outside the ships detailing the explorers associated with the ships, which were interesting to read. The museum looks onto the the Magellan straits and is a beautiful view. A nice way to spend an hour! you can also get onto the beach and see how crystal clear the water is!

Great way to spend 90 minutes. The replicas are to size. So you can actually go up and the various levels of the ship. Lots of information on the placards in English and Spanish. It was a photo op bonanza with the ships, signs, statues and view of the strait. Just beware of the rusty nails out on the edges of the property.

We had a day to spend in Punta Arenas before our boat departure so we ventured out here. It was about $7.00 for the cab out and they will call a cab for you to return to town. This little "museum" was so much fun. Life size replicas of Magellan's ship, Darwin's beagle, one of Shackleton's ice boats and one ship from the Chilean navy. You can climb all over the boats and really get a sense of the scale for the ships that carried these explorers. You might survive here in a light rain with the proper gear but any more than that and it would be miserable since it is all out doors. also a nice photo op for the Straits of Magellan.

These replicas are definitely worth a visit. I can't believe the owner actually built these ships, with such attention to detail. And the fact that you can go aboard and touch everything is really cool. My personal favorite is the James Caird replica, and for those that know the Shackleton story, please don't miss it!

The extraordinary result of one man’s vision and effort, this outdoor museum a short taxi ride just outside Punta Arenas is well worth a look. Four full-size replicas of four ships that helped shape Punta Arenas and Patagonia generally. The Nao Victoria, one of Magellan’s ships that first circumnavigated the world; HMS Beagle, made famous by Darwin; Shakelton’s tiny James Caird, and the Ancud, the ship that brought the first settlers to claim the areas around the Strait of Magellan for Chile. These are absolutely full size, and built from the original plans - incredible!
On the downside, the surrounding industrial area means that the view from the decks is less than inspiring, and the whole site needs a good sprucing up. The information panels (which are very detailed) are unreadable for the James Caird, which is a great pity. But just maintaining these vessels must be an enormous job. There are also very good rusted steel statues of dogs, cattle and deer. Altogether an eclectic, fascinating site.

Bonjour,
Je prépare un voyage au Chili pour Octobre 2019. J'ai besoin de conseils. Nous souhaitons aller au Parc Torres del Paine. On va arriver en avion de Santiago à Punta Arenas. On va rester 1 jour /1 nuit à Punta Arenas.
