As the Academic Ambassador to China, I had the good fortune to participate in my first (of very many) boat trips from Chongqing to Yichang with the Civil Engineering Ambassador as my room-mate. As we approached the damsite area, our first view was one of spectacular activity and organization. All we could see for miles and miles was construction companies,... More

The Three Gorges Dam Project is of such massive proportions it's unbelievable that it succeeded. Plus, it has provided many jobs that were needed. However, its success was at the expense of over 1 million people that were displaced.

The dam area is a must see when you visit the city of Yichang. The dam itself is huge! Nice to visit when the weather is good.

The scale of this project is incredible. Running 32 turbines, the 3 gorges dam project makes a vast contribution to China's energy needs. 1.5 million people were displaced to make way for the project. When I questioned the guide about the impact on other animals, I was advised that, when the valley was flooded, they all moved on and are... More

This massive flood protection/hydro/transport project is a highly controversial undertaking but is a very good thing when talking to the people involved in the tourist industry. The dam itself is spectacular, the locks very interesting, the amount of water held back is unbelievable. Well set up for viewing by the massive number of visitors who arrive each day.

We toured this dam at the end of our Yangtze River cruise. We got off the cruise bus in Sandouping and onto the government-owned tour bus to tour the dam site. First stop was their visitors center. Nice model of the dam and a good clear large photo outside. It was surprising to see tourist items such as jewelry and... More

The sheer size of this world's largest dam is really impressive, but even more when you realize how large the hydro-electrical production is here, compared to any other place in the world. Chinese certainly have some great engineers. Also enjoyed wtching the five-stage locks which raise and lower massive ships, with no cost. Tight security, as is true everywhere in... More

We passed through the ship locks at night and the eerie sound of the chains was hauntingly beautiful. A fantastic experience we felt lucky to undertake. We visited the dam again the next day and it's enormous, a real triumph of engineering. I didn't expect to find it so interesting, but it really was very good.

Very simply, too big to describe in a few words. The lock system created to transport ships is massive and is truly an engineering feat of genius. We travelled through the locks and I was amazed at how fast we climbed almost 100 feet. During our day trip to catch a panoramic view of the area, we were happy to... More

More than the dam itself (which is a construction marvel) the road route to the dam site and the boat ride back was really nice. Some really amazing constructions and breathtaking views from the bridges that we'd crossed to get to the site. The locks system is a marvelous piece of engineering. If you are in Yichang, this is a... More
