Try The Dong Po Pork And Squirrel Fish
A must visit. It is a relatively short stretch but packed with restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, historical buildings and lovely bridges. It can get quite crowded, and there are many couples and girls who dress up in style of olden days to take photos. This is also a good location to try the famous dish, sweet and sour squirrel fish, which is artfully sliced and then fried. They also have dong po pork, which is delicious.

Excellent place to spend some time walking and trying out different local food and alcohol
Not far from the Humble Administrator's Garden is Ping Jiang Road. This place is a must visit if you are a tourist. A lot like Shan Tang Jie, this place is a whole lot busier with more shops and more delicacies to try out. From the Humble Administrator's Garden, walk along YuanLin Road, past the Lion Grove Garden then turn right at the next intersection onto Shi Lin Si Lane. Keep walking until you cross the river and you will have arrived at Ping Jiang Road. The distance should be about 300 metres. Many shops to check out here, be sure to try the local delicacies, especially the locally brewed alcohol, has a strong fruity taste to it! There's also meat on skewers, fried cuttlefish, diced fruit, rice crackers (really filling these are!). If you tired from all the walking, there are trishaws that you can take to get to a nearby train station, the nearest one i saw on the map was Beisita, the fare is about RMB10. Beware though, the trishaw riders will try to scam you, one of them quoted me RMB50, inclusive of "admission fees" into the North Monastery Pagoda, another quoted me RMB20. I negotiated mine down to RMB10 from RMB20.

Lots to see and have a closed feel of the ancient times of the city
The Pingjiang road is a historical street that dates back to the Southern Song Dynasty. With well-preserved blocks of ancient buildings and historical shophouses, it acts as an epitome of ancient Suzhou. Walking around Pingjiang road resembles stepping in the daily life of the people in the olden times. There are also several museums here such as the Pingjiang Cultural Center and the Fan Museum etc, present the rich history and culture of the city. The scenery here, be it day or night is nice and charming, where visitors will be able to experience and indulge in rich cultural, handicrafts and arts activities, delicious local food and of course the superb lake view where you can also take a boat ride along the small canals! And some visitors will dress in the traditional "han" costumes to walk around the place, and is sure a worthwhile visitation experience!

We came here in the late afternoon/ early evening before they closed the road. Nice walk beside a small canal. Still plenty of people in the area. Lots of old buildings converted to tea houses and shops selling souvenirs, food, snacks, coffee etc. You get a feel of the old Suzhou and the laid back atmosphere.

It is one of the largest historic districts with a canal running along the cobblestone Pingjiang Road. Located in Suzhou Ancient Town. Today, most of the remaining old buildings were built during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the view of white walls with tiled roofs is retro and photogenic. It is very easy to access because it is about a three-minute walk from Xiangmao, Xiangmen Station and Xiangmen Subway Line 1. The evening was crowded with many tourists.

We visited this area the day after a trip to Tongli and found it to be a much easier location for visitors to access. A few minutes walk from a metro station and well signposted.
Only Negative was the number of bikes and scooters in the pedestrian area.

A sprawling, ancient street worth seeing with a wide range of shops for souvenirs and restaurants/street food. However, you should be aware of the large crowds of Chinese tourists.

Conclusion: Definitely go there, but plan for 1-2 hours :)

Lots of shops, beautiful traditional buildings and nice street art. They even had singing boat operators. If you're looking for good food in this area try Finland Home Cafe.

Pingjiang Road, an old traditional commercial street. visit here is a necessary link when you are in Suzhou. Here retain the architectural style of ancient times. you can see all kinds shops over here, Suzhou traditional snakes and toys, old collections, traditional restaurants, hotels and so on. I would stronglty suggest traveller to book an hotel in the alley, lay down your gears, head out and enjoy the prosperous old Suzhou. You will found the fashion of the old Suzhou.
