This is a AAAA national tourist site that receives little publicity. The ferry and entry fee to the island are 60rmb. The ferry is mostly standing only but it is a two minute trip. There is a temple, a pagoda, a hill climb, rock gardens, an old fort, a forest of stelae and numerous other nooks and crannies to explore on the island. Take a picnic basket and this makes a great day trip. Don't forget the mosquito repellent. The view on one side of the island is slightly marred by a power station across the river but otherwise there is plenty of nature to enjoy.

I once spent two days in Zhenjiang.A beautiful city, a combination of the ancient and modern. I've been to three famous mountains in Zhenjiang, named Jinshan Mountain, Jiaoshan Mountain and Beigu Mountain. Jinshan is famous for the folklore, a really romantic but sad love story. Beigu Mountain has a profound cultural and historical background, but I don’t know much about the history of Three Kingdoms. Jiaoshan Mountain is the most attractive one. It is located on a small island in the Yangtze River so we took a ferry. The ticket only costs 100RMB (the price of ferry is covered). We stayed there for nearly one day to appreciate the steles and pavilions. The next day we went to Jinshan Temple, also an attractive place. And we went to eat the crystal trotter and pot cover noodles in a traditional restaurant. Taste delicious! Names are interesting, aren’t they?

It was very easy to get there by bus which cost the equivalent of $0.15. I purchased the ticket for the site in the building just off the street and headed to the dock. Once across the water, I started at the temple and was mesmerized by the peaceful setting. It was early and a weekday, so not crowded. After the temple, I spent four hours meandering and was able to see everything by chance. I had trouble following the maps that were posted throughout the site, but covered the area nonetheless. The pagoda was closed for painting according to my translator app that used the camera. I was beyond disappointed. I wasn't the only one, but found it hard to commiserate with the language barrier. The stone tablets were fascinating, the lotus ponds, beautiful and the history of the fort was interesting. The flower garden was a bit past the prime season, but still pretty. It was a wonderful way to spend four hours.

Jiaoshan is actually an island in the Yangtze River. A ferry will take you to the from the bank to the island. In the past there was also a cable car but it has been dismantled.
Qing emperor Qianlong (1736-1796) came to Jiaoshan and said he preferred Jiaoshan to Jinshan, the other famous hill of Zhenjiang. It is a nice place for a walk in a natural environment. Climb the hill to reach the pagoda on its top is a good exercise. In addition it is an opportunity to discover an ancient fort, equipped with cannons, to defend Zhenjiang from enemies arriving from the River. This fort was built at the time of the first opium war in 1840. These guns were used in 1842 against British gunboats but did not prevent the British from landing and the fort fell.
Jiaoshan still houses an 1800 years old Buddhist monastery, the Dinghui monastery,
Jiaoshan is also famous for its Forest of Steles. Around 400 of them can be seen there, some dating back to the Han dynasty.

When the Qing Dynasty emperor, Qianglong, visited Zhenjiang in the late 18th century, he famously pronounced that he preferred Jiaoshan Hill to its more fancied Zhenjiang rival, Jinshan Hill. But having visited both, we are ready to side with the emperor: Jiaoshan Hill, actually an island floating in the Yangtze River, is more beautiful and relaxing. We recommend visiting both if you are in town, but you had to chose one or the other, chose Jiaoshan. "The floating jade" of this forested island is a welcome escape from the concrete jungles of Jiangsu.
The varied offerings include a 7-storey pagoda, a forest of stelae, a sweet osthmanthus garden, a former British fort from the days of the Opium War, and a weathered Buddhist temple with a sizable population of monks. All in all, any history buff should be able to spend a leisurely few hours enjoying these and other offerings.

This is a place to go to get some peace and quiet from the city. It is lovely to visit and the history with it is so interesting. The island tried to defend Zhenjiang again the British in the Opium War. A must see!

Spent a good two hours for a short trip in Jiaoshan. Great experience for those who are interested in Chinese history, culture or caligraphy.

One of the three hills one should see being in Zhenjiang. Not too much people, nice view, typical architecture. And nothing more to do in this city.

The island is a wonderful place to spend part of a day taking in the grand history, beautiful gardens and temple. The hike up the mountain to the Pagoda is worth the effort but be prepared for a little climb. Construction was underway to make the experience even better but that did not spoil our day. Plan to spend several hours and you can still have time to enjoy the Ferry area another great destination just a few blocks away on the mainland.

The park is lovely and the temples are beautiful. If you like Buddhism, you'll love this place. Tickets to the park are 50 RMB, which includes the ferry ride to the island. The island itself is quite lovely, and decorated with many Buddhist temples and buildings. There are very few choices for food or snacks on the island, so it's best to bring something with you. The hike to the pagoda at the top of the mountain is not long but there are a many steps, fortunately there are many small places to stop and rest. The pagoda, perhaps the park's best site, closes around 4 so it's best to get their early (February, summer might be different).
