I really expected this to be like the French Concession area of Shanghai... lovely shops and cafes, with at least one German restaurant featuring a nod to history. Nope. Tree-lined streets and one popsicle vendor.
I really didn’t get the appeal and just felt like I wasted time going there.
Maybe if it hadn’t been so very, very hot and very, very humid; or if I hadn’t been so hungry with no sign of food, it would have been a pleasant stroll to see trees... but, I doubt it.
The beach isn’t even enough of a draw to bring me back.

Badaguan Scenic Area (八大觀景區) is located east of Qingdao railroad station / south of Qingdao Zhongshan Park (青島中山公園). It is about 4.8 km (3 mi) by car from the railroad station. This historical mansion area is situated near the coastline of Qingdao. The name Badaguan came from the original 8 streets inside the area which are Zijingguan Road (紫荊關路), Ningwuguan Road (寧武關路), Shaoguan Road (韶關路), Jiayuguan Road (嘉峪關路), Hanguguan Road (函谷關路), Zhengyangguan Road (正陽關路), Linhuaiguan Road (臨淮關路), and Juyongguan Road (居庸關路) . Today it has two later added roads: Shanhaiguan Road (山海關路) and Wushengguan Road (武勝關路). All the roads are named after great military forts of the ancient Great Wall.
We took the No. 3 subway to the Zhongshan Park station and walked for less than 10 minutes to the beginning of Ningwuguan Road (甯武關路). We were now in the Badaguan area. We walked on the sidewalk with the foreign style mansions along the road. It is a quite unique place to have houses with the different styles of Germany, US, UK, France, Russia, Denmark, Spain, Japan, Greece, Switzerland, etc. Some of the buildings were converted to nursing homes, hotels, restaurants and vacation houses. Each house has its own yard and garden with a fence. Public gardens and rest areas were covered by trees, flowers and grasses. There are some houses open to public, and we visited the navy blue color Princess House (公主樓) first. It is a three story Danish rural villa which was a gift for a princess by the prince. Its garden has some large music instrument artworks and fairy tale figures from the storybooks we read when we were children. You can see the layout of original setting inside the building. Our 2nd visit was the newly opened (2017) Spanish Villa (西班牙風情館) on the opposite side of Princess House. It is a total different environment; we saw pirates, bullfighting and some music instruments inside the villa. Next is the key and most well-known building in Badaguan – the Huashi House (花石樓) which is at the south end of Badaguan overlooking the ocean. This five-story building looks more like a castle than a house and used only natural granite to sculpt the entire exterior walls. This house is famous not only because of its unique outlook but also because of famous residents who have stayed here. Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石, the President of the Republic of China between 1928 and 1975) and two famous Chinese communist high-ranking officials - Chen Yi (陳義) and Dong Biwu (董必武) - have stayed here for a short time. The last popular building we visited was the Butterfly House (蝴蝶樓) - a Qingdao Film Museum. The name of the location came from the actress of movie "Peach Blossoms after the Robbery" (劫後桃花) which was filmed here in 1935. Inside we saw some ancient filming equipment, pictures of the actor / actress and the films shot in Qingdao.
The most popular activity in Badaguan is wedding photography; we saw at least a dozen of couples along the roads and near the ocean even though it was a foggy and occasional raining day. We also went to the No. 2 City Beach nearby and enjoyed the wind and the open seas beside those beautiful buildings, roads, trees and flowers. You need to walk a lot, so wearing comfortable shoes is essential. Water and a hat are recommended.

I like Qingdao's architectural landscape which showcases an array of the traditional Chinese oriental styled temples, pagodas, pavilions, pier, gardens combined with the uniquely European Gothic, Medieval, renaissance and modern architectural styled churches, sanitarium, mansions, castles, sculptures, TV Tower, parks. Both styles harmoniously strengthen the touristy value of this beautiful seaport.
The German occupied Qingdao for less than 20 years but it had miraculously transformed the primitive oriental fishing village into a dynamic beautiful European city of the Far East. While we condemn the exploitative nature of the German colonialists, the `contribution' injects a new plethora of architectural fresh ideas into this part of China.
Badaguan Scenic Resort is one of that German `contributions' of a concentrated picturesque sanitarium originally meant to serve the interests of the imperialists and their families but today, it is one of the best spots for wedding photography and a resort for the politicians to meet foreign dignitaries and for leisure and relaxation in Qingdao.
The name `Badaguan' is a Chinese word which means the `Eight Passes' referring to the eight passes in ancient China. It also refers to the eight avenues in this resort area though currently there are ten avenues.
The whole resort area borders from the Second Bathing Beach to the Third Bathing Beach. I was staying at a hotel at Huiquan Square and I woke up on an early morning and took my stroll to the second beach and visited this resort area. The coastline was awesome and the resort area was quiet and serene on that early morning with the many cypress trees planted along the avenues.
I visited a beautiful pond and a garden but I was attracted by the scenic beach coastline that runs parallel to the resort. From the beach, I could see the impressive granite castle building of Huoshilou. The castle was once the sanitarium resort where General Chiang Kai Shek came here for relaxation with his family before his Kuomintang army was defeated by the communists and he fled to Taiwan.
Not all the architectural designs of the mansions here were impressive and as most of these mansions are privately owned, admission for tourists is prohibited. It would be ideal if some of the mansions especially those near the coastline are open for public viewing. The view should be spectacularly mesmerizing when one stands at the upper high floor of the mansions looking beyond the azure sea horizon and appreciating the beauty of the scenic coastline of Qingdao.
But for that quiet moment in the morning, a stroll to this resort is equally relaxing and rejuvenating.

The castle where Chiang Kai Shek and Soong Mei Ling briefly lived is fascinating, and the beach area and boardwalk are wonderful. Also a stop at Imeroui, which is a bar/coffee shop/B & B is very nice. White lights illuminate it at night, and two big trees grow from floor to ceiling in the bar/café area, the staff is lovely, and they have stuffed bears and more for sale. Lots of handicrafts for sale in the beach area too, as well as shells and cotton candy.

Perhaps we visited during the low season so we felt very relaxing and peaceful when we just randomly walked along all the streets in this area. The two major buildings - Princess Tower and Huashi House look great. Must also take a walk along the beach nearby (thought it's very windy and cold during winter).

Badaguan is an area built by Germans - you can only get into a few buildings - but it is a nice place to walk around and relax. Look at the architecture and realise you are still in China. Visit the German prison and the Government Guest house (used to be the German governors mansion) for a bit of early Qingdao history. Also there are two cathedrals that both survived communism. all within walking distance of the beach.
Entry fees to the buildings are minimal. A great restaurant in the basement of the mansion.

Entrance into the villas themselves is either restricted or ticketed. We didn't actually get to enter the villas as there were long lines of tourists all waiting to enter the villas as well (we visited on a regular weekend). Otherwise the tree-lined streets surrounding the villas make for a nice respite and a pleasant walk. Be prepared to walk back into town too once you get to Badaguan as taxis are practically nonexistent.

If you are in Qingdao with an afternoon to spare and good weather get the bus to the Olympic sailing area then walk back along the excellent shore path.
The contrast of different architecture styles is really interesting and you can watch kite flying contests taking place in front of modernist 21st ceentury sculpture. You may also see music and danging concerts in full swing and there are lots of snack places.
Best through is the secong half of the walk where brides (and a few grooms) pose for photo shots and short films with the rocks as background (or even as support). It was a cold day when we did the walk but we counted over twenty shivering beauties having the photo of their lives taken.

Qingdao wine Museum is a very nice place to visit. Its in wine street and its underground with the entrance on the ground. Its unique and made of stone. When you go by the entrance and follow the path inside down you will see a lot of nice European style paintings and many showing of wines from different areas of this planet. You can even test the wine from France, Spain, Italy, Austrilia, South Africa, Chilly, China, etc.
Its a very nice place to visit, but remember if you want there, wear more clothing than normal since its kind of cool inside.
I personally like wine very much.
