About
Luodai is an ancient town just outside Chungdu. The buildings date back to the 1600's. The main street is 1km long with ancient buildings on either side containing shops, craftsmen and restaurants. There are a number of dress and costume shops where people dress up to have their photo taken. It is easy to reach by either bus or taxi from Chengdu. The journey is c. 20km and takes about 45-60 mins. On a Sunday it is busy with local torists. Many of the shops and street vendors are of the native Hakka tribe. Well worth a visit for half a day.

There are lots of very beautiful things to see in this touristy ancient town. There are many historic buildings, some over 300 years old, and others rebuilt to replicate the originals. There are many shops for buying souvenirs, eateries, and more. A great place to enjoy strolling through the streets of a town which has existed for centuries.

Another beautiful ancient town of China. There are hundreds, some of which now are in the districts of larger cities, such as in greater Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. The main street of ancient town has become commercialized, probably largely due to the flow of sightseers. The mani street is home to many ancient structures throughout its one-kilometer length. Well worth a visit.

Luodai is easily accessible from Chengdu, buses leave Xinnanmen station regulary, 7 yuan tickets are bought from a 2nd building just behind the station. Well indicated by many signs.
After you get in Luodai, you'll be quickly surrounded by taxis and persons trying to make you pay to get the the ancient street. Do NOT accept. Just walk in the small street in front of the station (with many restaurants), then turn left into a small alley with a sign, all this is less than 200 meters from the station.
Luodai is really relaxing, especially if you've seen "ancient" streets like Jinli in Chengdu. Streets are really wide, and there's not so many people. You can mostly find lots of really nice food and lots of souvenirs shops there, also many really good tea shops (go to smaller side streets for the best ones). Then you'll also find lots of different things, from shoes to clothes, toys, candies, paintings, etc.
Many Hakka style buildings are free to visit along the way, also a free small museum about Hakka people.
This place is worth a visit if you have some spare time, it's really relaxing compared to many attractions in China, and also really cheap.
Tip: For Chengdu-Luodai way, you need to buy ticket at the station, NOT for Luodai-Chengdu where you pay directly on bus (same 7 yuan price). Do not lose time by trying to find the ticket office in Luodai bus station: there is none.

I took the bus from Chengdu - it's very close and easy to organise if you go to Xinnanmen Bus Station. Buses go every 10 minutes. Go out the back of the bus station to buy a ticket - not inside the main building. The most interesting part is a long street that meanders up a hill with a temple at the end. Walk from the bus station - it's very close. It's very touristy with shops all the way and obviously completely rebuilt and renovated but quite charming and interesting. As a photographer, I took lots of cool pictures - even after living in Chengdu for nearly 5 years now. Wander off the main street to see local people going about their business, drinking tea and playing mahjong.

I stayed at Traffic Hotel beside Xinnamen Bus station so it is very convenient for me to just take a bus to any of the attractions out of Chengdu. On the very first day I was in Chengdu, I went to Huanglongxi Ancient Town. Luodai was not in my tour itinenary but on the last three days in Chengdu, I suddenly decided to go there to have a look. The bus ticket was just RMB 7 and it only took less than an hour to reach my destination from Xinnamen.
The entrance to the attraction is also free. The bus from Xinnamen arrived at Luodai bus terminal and you just need to walk for about 5 minutes and you are inside the ancient town itself. I arrived at Luodai at about 8.30 am and left Luodai at about 4 pm. I never realized that I would spend almost a whole day at the ancient town.
Both Huanglongxi and Luodai each has its own uniqueness but Luodai gave me an impression of greater space and easy walking. The main shopping area is concentrated in just one long street while Huanglongxi is a bit more complicated with more streets of shops hidden at the tail end of the river.
There is a new site beside Luodai old town where you are served with free green tea and you can sit and relax in an atmosphere of serenity and music. The promoter was nice and topped up our tea and assured us that we need not pay a single cent as they are having a promotion to attract visitors to the new site. It was nice able to relax and sit at one corner away from the crowd and chit chat while listening to the soothing music. This contrasted with the noisy atmosphere at Huanglongxi.
We visited one of the shoes shop and found the price was quite reasonable. My wife bought a pair of shoes for RMB 29. She saw a similar design in Singapore but cost twice the price. The quality appeared to be equally good.
We have some noodles for our lunch at the town and ate at one of the restaurants that appeared to be cleaner than the rest. The price was not expensive but the dishes were overly saltish. I still prefer the less saltish noodles I ate in Chengdu town. The Sichuan health ministry should educate the hawkers and her citizens on using less salt in their diets and drive the message of how excessive salt had a detrimental effect on one's health.
The local peaches sold here at the ancient town were quite cheap. We bought one kg of them for just RMB8. One thing good about Chengdu is that you easily get to buy their local fruits at most anywhere. We are happy to be able to buy fresh fruits like pineapples, bananas, `pipa', peaches at most places during our stay in Chengdu. They are not expensive and look fresh.
Remember to visit the round roof yellow house of the Hakka people. It is not along the main street but a distant walk away. Although it is a `faked' one (constructed), it gives you a concept of how the structure and architecture of the Hakka house is all about.
For a relaxed walk, Luodai ancient town is not a bad option.

Lovely ancient town not far away from Chengdu City. Best to visit in the month of July as there are arrays of events. I first discovered the place when reading history of Hakka ethnic. Good to spend at least half a day here, as you need to experience the street, and go and visit the Museum.
How to travel to Chengdu Luodai Ancient City
There are many ways to go there. If you are those type who don't mind paying more and safe the trouble to change mode of transport, you can always take a taxi there. For me, I will try to recommend the cheapest method all the time in any of my reviews at Trip Advisor.
So, from Chengdu City centre, take Subway Line 2 to Long Quan Yi Station (Last Station). Fare from Tian Fu Square Station to Long Quan Yi Station is RMB 7 only. Journey will take 45 minutes.
From Long Quan Yi Station, go to the nearest Bus Stop, Chongjie Street Music Centre Station, and take Bus Route 850 to Luodai Customer Centre Station, which is 25 stops away. Fare will be RMB 2 only. Journey will take 45 minutes.
From Luodai Customer Centre Station, walk out and turn right. Walk along the street for 5 minutes until you reach a T Junction, turn left and walk, Luodai Ancient City entrance is right in front of you.
Enjoy you day trip there ... From Yan Chee LAW, a Malaysian traveller ...

To go Luodai, take Line 2 subway and get off at Ta Zi Shan Gong Yuan station, take tutu/cab to Wu Gui Qiao bus station (or you can walk if you know the way). Take public bus number 219, ticket is RMB 3 per person and get down at the bus stop just outside Luodai Ancient Town (you won't miss as it is the last stop). Try to get a seat as the journey is about 45 minutes. If you are interested to hike, take a cab to Mini Great Wall first, before you walk around the Luodai Ancient Town as you need more energy to climb those stairs. The entrance fee for Mini Great Wall is RMB5 per person.
You can see that there are lots of tourist at Luodai Ancient town, you can get the chance to taste some local delicacies, silk stalls, souvenirs and the price are reasonable. I also noticed that this Ancient Town got lots of stalls for youngster and teenagers whereby you will see few "fun fair" stalls (where you can try your hand at throwing a ball and winning something), "haunted house", stall where you can rent those ancient clothing to take picture with and other foods & souvenirs stalls. If you are tired of walking, you can hire a "rickshaw" ride.

Luodai has an ancient / touristy part and a more modern town (low buildings).
The ancient part is lovely, has great architecture (well maintained) and its inhabitants (mainly Hakka people) are charming (even though we didn't speak more that 10 words of Chinese).
In the ancient town you will find historical buildings (some can be visited but close early, around 5pm) and shops (silk souvenirs, jade souvenirs, food stalls selling worm skewers or Scorpio skewers - chinese tourists were only eating chicken skewers though! - as well as delicious biscuits). Tea houses are concentrated in the centre of town on a lovely square.
Luodai is one of the closest ancient towns to Chengdu (about 1 hour away by underground). We took a taxi (cheap in Sichuan) to go there and it was a bit tricky to find one to go back to Chengdu.

Thank you for your review - how long does the direct bus take from Chengdu to Luodai and how long does the metro take? Thank you :) - Iris

We took a chartered bus which took about an hour. I guess public transport by bus should take similar time. I am not aware of the metro connection. Please do ask at your hotel. And please do install Baidu translate as google does not work :-D HTH

I read that to buy a bus ticket to go to Luodai from Xinnanmen Bus Station, I don't buy the ticket inside the main building ticket office, but need to go out the back of the bus station. Which bus number should I look for? and do I pay the bus driver directly or need to find some ticket office outside in the back of Xinnanmen Bus Station?
Thank you.

The express bus appears to only leave for Luodai once a day at around 11:30 am and then turns around and heads back to the city without leaving any time to see the sites. You can take a regular city bus from the bus station and get off at the subway which will get you back to Chengdu faster than the bus. This regular bus can be paid for when you get on.
