Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

I reckon this Opera and Face Changing performance has been in Chengdu for some time, but was not on TA, so here i am, trying to put it up on TA.
It's Chinese name is 芙蓉国粹, and the address is 成都市锦江区华兴镇街54号锦江剧场
Firstly, out of sheer laziness, i paid 120 RMB to my hostel to organise this tour, which includes transport to and fro from the hostel. I think it was reasonable to do that.
After researching, you actually pay between 80-150 RMB for the tickets depending on where you are seated. I got the ground level, last row seats, which was still quite decent and could see the stage etc. (the place isn't that big anyway.)
There are english translation at the side screen during the performance, and the emcee tried her best to introduce in both mandarin and english (not very well).
The SIchuan Opera was interesting to watch, as they tell you some part of "Romance and the 3 kingdom" but it can get boring after awhile, as you do not know what you are watching or listening. There's also a puppet master whom is awesome with his showmanship of puppet. Anyway i was mainly there for the face changing show.
Overall, i was impressed and i think it's worth to watch it LIVE once. There are many foreigners watching the show, and it's a daily show. After the show, there would be a mad rush to return to your vehicle to send you back to your accommodation. The whole show took about 1h 30 mins.

Enjoyed this wonderful show, Our guide secured front rows seats- costs 180 yuan to go watch the performance There were other acts but the changing face/masks was the best. Performers literally change their mask so quickly.
The whole show was very entertaining and encourage anyone to make a trip to see this show- Although narrated in Chinese, show was entertaining enough. So do not worry about wanting to understand what performers were talking about. PS Front row seats also comes with FREE TEA.

It’s great visiting time there on June 21 evening. It’s my 2nd time visit and 1st was more than 10 years before. Entertainment company served wanton soups and green tea drink as complimentary. All arrangements were very nice especially Chengdu faces.

We visited the Sichuan Opera in February 2013. A short show with various acts performing with puppets, rolling tables, musician and changing masks. The stories are told in Chinese, but there is a screen that translates to English. My husband an I really enjoyed the show and the mask changing was very quick and clever. I would definitely recommend this show. You get an insight into Chinese culture.

If money is not an issue and you're keen to see a Chinese spectacle then the Sichuan opera could possible be for you. Truth be told it's a bizarre set of skits in a rustic theatre offering everything from finger shadow puppets (probably the best skit) to a god-awful comedy show that non-Chinese speakers will find even worse. The singing component sounds like cats being strangled (I imagine) although the mask changing act is pretty fun. Perks are you can get your ears cleaned out for a few dollars with alarmingly long tweezer-like tongs and there's free tea. Tickets start from about 200 yuan which is a lot for something that at it's best is puzzling.

Fabulous performance. Very dramatic and lively. Time well spent. Our guide got us seats that were on the front row. The hotel also offered to arrange tickets for us. Have someone local get your tickets and you will be up front. It is a very exciting evening of entertainment.

A very entertaining evening, seeing some of the best of Japanese culture, dance and music.
The adjacent tea house is an education - we were amazed to see customers having their ears cleaned whilst supping tea. But there you go - it's all part of the importance (to us) of learning how other cultures work.
The show in the little theatre next door is stunning - we couldn't take our eyes off the stage. Costumes, music, dance and lighting combined into an excellent show.
The face changing is in the second half and is just bewildering to watch. We could not imagine how the faces (masks) can be changed so fast - in the blink of an eye.
this was one of the cultural highlights of our trip.

If you want the real experience, go to the early afternoon shows reserved for Chinese senior citizens. You need to show up early or even a day earlier to purchase tickets, but you can always kill time having tea in the old teahouse where the box office is located. Unfortunately, the museum has very limited work hours and is not open on some days so I wasn't able to visit it. On my list for the next visit.

Its a small theater, adjoining a tea house. We were served tea in the teahouse (cafeteria setting) , then seated to watch an amazing spectacle. Extremely colorful characters, wearing outrageous costumes and telling different stories or performing a variety of acrobatic acts. The story lines were thin (unlike classic European operas), but altogether a delightful evening..
