It was an amazing experience, loved it! The pandas, the place, everything in this place was fun! Totally recommend! Just make sure to wear some comfy clothes and shoes! Lots of mosquitoes though!

Was super excited to go and have the experience, I knew going during a holiday would be packed but I wasn’t expecting this much of a crowd. The whole experience in it self was amazing , seeing the pandas up front and in their habitat

What a wonderful experience it is to visit the Giant Panda Research and Breeding base in Chengdu. It's located just outside the city and is easily served by taxis or busses. Being able to see Pandas in this wonderful park like reserve is a life altering experience and one you'll remember for a lifetime.
The park itself is really beautiful with so many comfortable rest areas and walking trails. Its very scenic and extremely well maintained by the park staff. There are lots of eating venues and drink stands, so there's no need to bring anything with you. The park is huge and it takes at least half a day of more to cover all areas. Its best to start very early, we got there at 8am, as the Pandas are active in the mornings but sleep in afternoon.
Seeing Pandas like this is a moving experience. You can get quite close to these wonderful animals and they seem very happy coping with the enormous crowds who flock to the park each day.
This is a lifetime experience and one you can only have in Chengdu in China. If you are planning to visit China at anytime this is a must see, equal to if not more important that the Great Wall etc.
Importantly, you need to go early, and be prepared for large crowds, this is one of Chinas most popular attractions. We visited during the pandemic and it was very crowded but luckily most people are fully masked.

Go early we arrived at 7:10am, start queuing until 7:30am when the gates open, foreigners need their passport, foreigners buy the ticket onsite just outside the gate (queue first) once in take the golf kart to the first stop 10(rmb) To see the pandas outside temp needs to be below 20° so try and choose a colder day if possible. The baby pandas are viable at 10:30am there was only one on the day we are there, born 1.5 months ago, in my opinion not worth waiting. On the day we went there are lot of pandas to be seen out eating, moving slowly and sleeping. I recommend it, allow 2-3 hours

Arrived at 7.30am and took about 10 minutes to get in the park - was very busy! Initially disappointed as it seemed all the pandas were inside and with condensation was difficult to see through glass. But walking further into the park there were lots sat outside, munching away on their breakfast! Don't follow the crowds, walk your own path and you will inevitably come across pandas other people haven't seen! I will never visit a zoo, but be rest assured this is nothing like a zoo at all - huge enclosures (although that doesn't make sense as an enclosure suggests a closed space - but still!) They had lots of room and were clearly really well looked after. Wonderful to see, and read about the efforts of the staff team there. The tour groups spoiled it with the bellowing speakers, and the umbrellas made it difficult to walk round, but none of that matters when you see the pandas, relaxing and doing their own thing. Nature really is incredible! Great entry price of 54 RMB - they just need to work on improving their gift shop. Was raining lots when I went but I imagine it is a lovely place for a family to spend a day when the sun is shining. Be sure to walk around the lake and look at the flowers too! I had been all around by 9.30am and was ready to leave when all the big tour buses were arriving.

We had such a great morning at the centre and can’t believe how many pandas we saw! I recommend arriving very early to beat the crowds- we got there at 7.30 and were able to see the pandas eating and playing; however as the morning went on, the pandas went inside and could only be seen in viewing rooms, with crowds of people streaming through (that’s when we left…) There is a research centre building where you can read info in English so we learnt quite a lot too. Definitely worth a visit, but please arrive early to avoid disappointment!

Purchasing tickets at the Research Base was easy (& cheap)! The park is well-organized with bilingual signage. Pandas appear to be very well cared for in beautiful enclosures that mimic their natural habitat. It was worth getting there early (just after 7:30am) to be able to observe feeding time.
The grounds of this facility are gorgeous & well-maintained. Of note, food & souvenirs are not ridiculously priced!
This was the highlight of our trip to Chengdu & a place I would recommend to anyone!

we are very impressed by the number of pandas as well as their well being. despite being against for captivating the wild animals, Pandas are among few exceptions as they are already endangered. these big mammals are taken care well here.

if you are thinking of seeing breeding session and/or baby panda you could forget about it ;there hasn't been new born baby panda for awhile now.
The Swan Lake within this attraction is not much too see either ; a couple of swans and dirty .muddy lake .
The museum within was ok but nothing you cant search online ; the documentary on BBC is more informative.
Overall , if you are looking for in depth information on Panda and breeding programs I find I would get more in depth information if I had search online. But, you get to see live panda of course.
It's really nothing much I see the entry fees i have paid as contributions to its cause.

Hello
Will be visiting in March and would like to know if the Panda Base Volunteer panda keeper is available be and suitable for children. We are excited to have close encounters with pandas. Also does the panda base offer the Panda photo opportunity ?
Thank you

You will see pandas in the grounds. The babies, in the nursery are behind glass and keepers keep the crowds moving on through. Get your camera ready and get a quick photo. There are so many people to get through, you don't have long. You will probably get better photos of the red pandas. They come up close. There are no special photo opportunities, you just have to snap what you see.

Hi- is there any where in the park where you can pay to leave luggage? Left luggage area?
Thank you!

I did not see any place that has luggage service that you want, however I really wasn't looking for it. I would suggest that you call or email the research center in order to get a definite answer. The research website should offer the contact info that you need.

Hi we have just booked a trip to China and visiting the Panda base in Sept 2021 but I see on our itinerary that we are visiting on a Saturday. Is it better to go midweek as I see some reviews mentioning the crowds. I will ask our travel planner to change days if necessary

We are transitting through chengdhu on our way to sri lanka and do not have a visa (there is a 140 hour allowance for transit). If there is time can we still visit the sanctuary or does it count as being out of the city limits?

Hi. I am in China from 7th September and this is one of the places we will be visiting - I am so excited. I just want to know how expensive the gift shop is? I have 6 grandchildren and would love to take something home from here for them. Thanks

If you see gift selling outside the park already, pls buy there, for sure cheaper than the gift shop inside. Panda toys are everywhere in Chengdu on the street, you don’t have to only target in the gift shop in the Zoo. Get up really early and enjoy the trip.

We heard that the pandas are kept inside during the summer months - will be visiting Chengdu at the beginning of July - because of the heat! Can anyone tell me if the morning feeding takes place outside or inside during the summer? Thanks,Eva

We were there in July last year. There were pandas inside and outside. The newborns were kept inside. The bigger pandas were free to roam outside. Enjoy your trip.
