Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We did the Pico de Loro hike with PicoLoro Ecotourismo. It's a beautiful but challenging hike (not just walking, you'll need to pull yourself on tree roots and scamper over rocks). We did it in December which is rainy season, so not ideal (very limited visibility, muddy and slippery). Better to go in January-August.

It's about 3.5 hours up, 2.5 hours down. (obviously varies depending on the shape you're in)

I would recommend doing it with a guide, though it's not required. Do keep in mind that they only allow 50 people to start the trail each day (so either be early, go mid week, or organize it through a travel agent).

We spent a very happy month in Cali in February 2018 and did various day-hikes on the fringes of the Farallones Park. A quick note about Pico de Loro: we walked near Pueblo Pance on 27 February and called in at Topacio to talk to park staff controlling access to Pico de Loro. They were absolutely adamant that was not currently permitted to climb Pico de Loro without a guide. They had telephone numbers of guides available, but it was not clear how much notice would be required to engage one. We suggested it would be helpful if they would inform the tourist information office in central Cali about this policy – very helpful staff there had given us detailed information about accessing Pico de Loro, but had not mentioned the requirement to have a guide.

We wanted to hike Pico de Loro, but when we contacted a local guide (Julian Giraldo, +57 317 3800338) we were told that the quota of 50 people was full every weekend for the next month and a half. Looking around we found Peñas Blancas, another hike very close to Cali, of similar difficulty and length. Unfortunately there is very little information online, and no corresponding TripAdvisor page for it, so I'll provide some details here.

It may be a bit more difficult to get to, but Peñas Blancas is a wonderful hike, starting in the little town of Peñas Blancas (20 minutes past Pichinde). After a little searching we found a contact (Rubiela, +57 318 266 4522) who was able to arrange a local guide for us. Orfilia and her son Kevin (+57 316 392 4017) were good guides, and the hike took about 6 hours, including rest stops. The trail is not very good in parts - muddy, and with trees blocking the path so you have to crawl though. But the views from the top are very nice on a clear day. The guiding costs $60,000 for groups up to 6 people ($10,000 per person thereafter). Also, you have to buy a small insurance policy ($5000 per person).

Getting there: We took a taxi, leaving Cali at 6AM, which was quite expensive ($80,000 cop) However, the chivas (local buses) do not leave until 9 or 10 on weekends. The last bus back to Cali leaves at 3PM. If you don't have a car, a taxi or guala (trucks that leave from downtown, I'm told) may be your only option. Taking the chiva back is very simple. Talk to Rubiela or Kevin for updated recommendations on how to get there, depending on the day, etc.

This is perhaps one of the most visited peaks in Cali. An experienced hiker will normally take from two to three ours to get to its peak. Great for those who love hiking and enjoy the magnificent view of the mountain ranges and of the city of Cali and other towns that this mountain peak offers.
