A good example of colonial architecture with a gateway topped with the Spanish coat of arms. Now a museum housing pre Columbian pottery, historical objects including art, furniture, weapons and instruments of torture dating from the time of the inquisition.

Interesting history, and fairly informative if you can read Spanish. If you can't however, then a guide is necessary, as was the case for some in our group. No way around it if you want the full shebang. All in all, good way to kill an hour and learn a bit about Cartagena's past.

Very disappointed in the lack of English translations at the exhibits. I'd say 1 in 5 of the explanations at various artifacts or displays had English translations in addition to Spanish. It was marketed differently. You will need to hire a local guide to give you a tour if you want to learn about the exhibits and history.

In short, it's a GO, although very average. Now for the details. From what we could understand the Museum lost most of it's historic archive decades ago during difficult economic years for Colombia and renovations started a few years ago. Currently there are two main exhibitions: The Inquisition is on the ground floor and the History of Cartagena is on... More

Most of the information was in Spanish with only a few parts translated into English so if you don't understand Spanish it might not be as good an experience. Lots of different sections about the history of the city (colonialism, religious crusades, torture, independence) and also a heartbreaking temporary exhibition about the desaparecidos in Mexico. It's quite small but there's... More

Great museum with emphasis on the Spanish Inquisition at the Plaza Bolivar. It was an easy walk from our hotel. Various restaurants and shops close by.

I was expecting a lot more, no torture chambers and devices except pictures. The one bizarre thing for which you fork out money is their walking wifi connected guide. Their attempt at humor which I might have excused but for the totally inept and mistimed guided tour. Do not buy this. There was a guillotine and a hanging site. Pics... More

This is a below average collection - the museums in bogota will give you a better history overview. Not worth the pricey entrance fee.

Wow there are a few important points translated into English, the museum would appeal to a lot more people and educate a lot more travelers if it was fully translated. As such, I paid about 18,000 Colombian pesos and got very little information out of it. I speak a little Spanish but not enough for this to have been a... More
