Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Feels like a modern church. I loved how the stray dogs seek the cool floors of the church. The trees around the building fill up with grackles and parakeets every afternoon, making a raquet that rises above the busy city noises.

I view the cathedral from Casa de Leda Hotel and as I explored Santa Marta's Historic Area. Due to the Covid and time, I was not able to enter it.

Nice church. In front altar tomb for Simon Bolivar. Nice little square around with some sales people around. A simple no thank you works fine

Lovely cathedral in the heart of the city. Inside it is well taken care off but outside needs more care, there are many street vendors around, a bit of trash and there are no places with shade or chairs sit (in the late afternoon or evenings)

it may be the oldest town in Colombia, but, to be honest, its pretty dull, and is not a patch on Cartagena. if you look at reviews of the attractions...apart from this, pretty underwhelming church, they are all beaches or tayrona national park. that is because santa marta is not really big on attractions...in fact it is not really attractive at all...and if you have just come here from Cartagena, you will probably be wondering why you bothered. I looked at staying here, and am so glad that I chose to stay in taganga instead....ok, it doesn't have this church, the oldest in south America...but you can easily get a taxi for around $3US..just spend the day here, see the church, do a bit of shopping, and then go back to somewhere nicer, and closer to tayrona, with those fantastic beaches.
I think you might find that this is not a review of the church, whats to say?...but there is no where else to review santa marta as a town, even that should ring alarm bells.
on the other hand...I did buy those amazing, brightly coloured Colombian bags on a street near this church for half the price I had seen them anywhere else, and from a woman who was making them with the wool attatched to her feet.
so there are some good things about santa marta.
that and it has a cambio....there is not one in taganga.

I'm not sure who was charging for access in the other reviews. The architecture is impressive for its age and the ornaments are arcane. It's certainly a different experience from European cathedrals.

Beautifully white, mercifully small and thankfully busy with a service when I was there. Santa Marta is a bit of a disappointment but at least the cathedral is pretty

Famous for being the original resting place of Simon Bolívar, this small Cathedral is the seat of the Catholic Church in Santa Maria. There is a memorial to Bolivar’s resting place to the right of the main alter. Mass is celebrated daily at 1200 and 1800.

This is also called the Whitewashed Cathedral and the Cathedral Basilica de Santa Marta. It is the oldest cathedral in Santa Marta which is the oldest City in Columbia. True to its nickname the outside is spectacularly white. The inside is beautifully decorated with beautiful statuary and alter. This Cathedral is somewhat open air and surprisingly has pigeons flying around inside. Simon Bolivar, revolutionary fighter for independence from Spain was interred in this Cathedral shortly after his death. This is a must see attraction right on the Parque de los Novios historic downtown square of Santa Marta

The steps in front of the church was crowded with people sitting. Inside the church was a nice cool escape from the heat. Another town square and another church.
