New Jersey's tallest lighthouse awaits you at Pacific and Rhode Island...

New Jersey's tallest lighthouse awaits you at Pacific and Rhode Island Avenues in Atlantic City (walking distance from Showboat Casino). Take an amazing journey into time and above it all as you ascend the 228 steps of the Absecon Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in the country. You'll see breathtaking views of the Atlantic City skyline and up top you'll come face-to-face with the original first-order Fresnel Lens, first lit in 1857.The lighthouse's recent multi-million dollar restoration also includes a stunning replica of the Lightkeeper's dwelling, an educational museum, charming gift shop, Fresnel Lens exhibit in the original Oil House and expansive grounds. The Absecon Lighthouse is on both the New Jersey and National Registries of Historic Places.

So, yes. It's a nice little lighthouse. Nothing more. Nothing less. It doesn't appear to be in a great neighborhood. There is a plaque on the fence surrounding the lighthouse that indicates that it is historic. No one would go out of his/her way to visit this lighthouse, I would think.

If you're into old lighthouses, this one is a tall beauty. Always worth a drive by, or even a stop to walk around it. If you get a chance, the inside is a nice tour.

Lots of old photos inside. Staff was awesome answering our questions. The climb to the top was felt the next day! Ouch! Cool souvenirs available onsite too!

I highly recommend visiting the light house and climb to the top. Tallest lighthouse in NJ and the third tallest in the country (masonry). I even purchased souvenirs. Beautiful structure.

The lighthouse is about four blocks away from the now closed Revel Casino. It is a piece of history and is the third tallest lighthouse in the United States. There is a small museum and a gift shop on the ground floor. A very modest charge is asked for those willing to climb to the top of the lighthouse. It... More

We went to visit the Absecon Lighthouse on a Tuesday. While it was impressive and the grounds were neat and inviting, we were locked out. Times must be changing as this attraction is closed on Tuesdays & Wednesdays. Spoiled by the old notion of historical places and attractions being closed the traditional Monday. Still worth a stop any day unless... More

Having lived in South Jersey near the AC area for over 40 years, I never once visited the Absecon Lighthouse property in the AC inlet area. I was astounded by all the information regarding the several years that Dr. Jonathan Pitney spent lobbying the NJ and US legislatures to have a lighthouse built in order to safeguard the passage of... Although I didn't climb the steps to the top, I did enjoy talking to the friendly and knowledgable elderly guide dressed as either a lighthouse keeper or sea captain. The keeper's house is a beautiful restoration and contains historical displays and a gift shop. The grounds are nicely maintained and boast a community vegetable garden project, some picnic tables, and... More
