Overview
More
Rijeka’s St. Vitus Cathedral is the only Baroque rotunda of monumental dimensions built on Croatian land. The construction of this church began in 1638 based on the design of the Jesuit architect G. Brian. The eminent Venetian church, Santa Maria della Salute, served as s model. An elevated spot was chosen for the construction of St. Vitus church at the heart of the then medieval urban tissue. Initially there was a small church of the same name located on the same site, dedicated to the city’s patron saint. The Jesuit order, as creator of the project, immediately decided to use the cult of the wooden Magic crucifix from the original church, which popular legend says began to bleed when a certain Petar Lončarić, threw a stone on it in fear after losing at gambling.

Free to get into, and was nice and quiet when we visited. Although beautiful it was quite plain inside and only takes minutes to see all of it.

A church with a round shape! During my visit it was closed, I could not enter. I wish I had seen better!

Lovely for a wander into. Entrance is free and we were given scarfs to cover our shoulders and knees up.

When strolling around the old city take some time to stop and see the Cathedral. The round shape, the bullet holes and by all means the entry doors. The doors tell a wonderful story. Can't take pictures inside but still worth taking a quick look.

The most beautiful church in Rijeka. It's a shame that it's closed sometimes, but it's really quite a thing to see

Very special piece of history. Very nice church, basically a must-see in Rijeka. Unique from outside in architectural way, unique from inside in artificial way.
