Interesting historical stop
Feb 2020
Any tour of Dili will lead you to Santa Cruz Cemetery, where a horrible massacre of 250 young people occurred in 1991. The stone designs are quite colorful, with a variety of shapes and sizes, very different from the typical American cemetery. A must see during your visit to Dili.

Historic Site

Given what the world saw of the massacres that took place pre-independence for Timor Leste, we had to visit this place. It's an incredible site with graves crammed so close together, it's difficult to move around. I actually jumped the fence to get back to the front gate as I was getting stressed. Far too many Timorese have died in their youth!

The bullet marks still evident of the massacre here.

Until the filming of the horrific massacre that occurred to the Timorese here was smuggled out, the rest of the world was unaware of the genocide and horror being enacted on the timorese by the Indonesian occupation.

A touching and important site
May 2019 • Solo
The cemetery was the site of a brutal massacre some twenty years ago, an event that is still felt by many Timorese to this day and helped catalyze the fight for independence. Wander the tomb stones long enough and you're sure to see locals come by to light candles and maybe even sing a song or two in a relative's honor.

Visit to Santa Cruz
Mar 2019 • Business
I have visited this special and significant site in Dili many times. I first went in 2009 and was amazed to see the pastel toned graves and how closely situated they are. I found it very peaceful and took my time to absorb the atmosphere. Since then I have taken many colleagues there when working in country. This site and the Resistance Museum give useful insights for those seeking to better understand the history of the country.

Monument to Slaughter
Jan 2019 • Solo
The cemetery stands as a monument to the slaughter of Timor protestors by Indonesian security forces. Worth a visit.

A sobering but inspiring visit
Jan 2019 • Friends
It is a little odd to rate a visit to a cemetery as a highlight but given the central important role of the massacre that occurred here such a rating is fully justified. It is pleasant, peaceful, colorful and tranquil but go with a local so they can explain the Santa Cruz massacre and the procession here from Motael for the funeral of a dissenter that exposed the brutality and the repugnance of the former occupying Indonesian military. Across the road you will notice the barb wire perimeter fence. This is an Indonesian cemetery. Still a sensitive subject, what is amazing is the forgiveness, resilience and indomitability of the people of Timor Leste.
