Giant tortoises!
Sep 2021
This is the place to see the giant Galapagos tortoises in their natural setting. They are found wandering all over the huge property. It's unbelievable that some of these tortoises are more than 150 years old!

Underwhelming

The lava tunnels are fascinating, otherwise watching tortoises in a muddy field didn't really excite or inform. Not worth 3 hours.

Great place to have lunch and see tortoises
Aug 2021
Pleasant farm like nature preserve where the giant tortoises rule. Excellent meal and pleasant area to just sit and watch as well as fascinating lava tunnels to visit. Good for whole family especially with older folks who cannot hike a lot - they can sit comfortably watching the wild life while younger folks hike the trails. Carapaces of the tortoises on display too.

Big Tortoise Stop
Jul 2021
We went to Reserva El Chato (2) with a guide. The food was very good. There was coffee and tea whenever you wanted it. They provide boots for the boggy area that the tortoise inhabit. There were scores and scores of tortoise...a much greater concentration then you will see anywhere else as you tour the islands.

Tortoises everywhere
Jun 2021
I was amazed by how many wild tortoises there were in this place. It was incredible. This place is a nonprofits so the money you spend there go back to the tortoises. The guides are all volunteers. I had an amazing time and I was able to get some pretty cool pictures of them.

Visited El Chato after arriving on the island
Jul 2021
We landed on Baltra, took the bus, then the ferry, and then a taxi (which had been previously arranged through our AirBnB) to El Chato. We paid the entrance fee and was offered a naturalist guide to lead us on a tour around the property. The guide works for tips and is optional.
We went ahead and accepted the guide and I am glad we did. What would have been a pretty short trip around the property looking at awesome giant tortoises, turned into an hour long nature presentation with someone who knows a lot about the flora and fauna of the Galapagos and spoke perfect English! The guide also led us through the lava tunnel and explained how the tunnel was created.
I felt it was worth giving the guide $10 per person. This is what other guides (who were not optional) charged and our guy did as good as job as they did.

If you want to see the Giant Tortoises, this is the place to go.
Jul 2021 • Couples
We went to 4 different islands and didn’t see the Giant Tortoises (one of the animals for which the Galapagos are famous) anywhere else. And not only do you see one or two of these amazing animals from a distance, No, you can see nearly 100 and from distances mere feet away. (But no touching is permitted of course). And if you want to take a break, you can hike the lava tube from an ancient volcano or relax with a delicious meal at the restaurant while continuing to view them. So amazing!

A natural reserve hosting the most amazing creatures, a must visit
Jun 2021
Giant turtles are a treasure of the world, this is a unique opportunity to watch them closely and understand how important they are for our ecosystem.

Local naturist guides are helpful, knowledgeable and kind. The facilities have local, organic coffee and tea (not bag tea, but real leaf tea sourced from their grounds). As soon as you get there you will get all the instructions to enjoy your visit.

Galápagos Islands will disappear at some point, not due to climate change but to the natural cycle of volcanic islands. This is a must visit and one visit will not be enough.
