After Ahmedabad was founded in 1411 CE by Sultan Ahmed Shah I as the capital of the Gujarat sultanate, Ahmed Shah built this fort as the citadel. It is supposedly named after a Bhadrakali Temple within the fort premises. The gate here has a handprint on the stone gateway, which local devotes believe is the handprint of the goddess Bhadrakali herself. Many women passing by climb up onto the railing beside this and press a palm to the handprint, praying for blessings.
We could only go a very short way up the main driveway to the fort because the rest of it was all closed off for renovations. This will probably take some time to get done, so it’s pretty pointless going all the way just to see the fort. However, if you've come to the Sidi Saeed Mosque, just five minutes' walk away, and if you're going to the Jami Masjid - about ten minutes' walk further into the old part of town - you can stop by here briefly.

Bhadra Fort is the former royal palace and fort of the Muzaffarid dynasty and then the Mughal governors after the latter's conquest of the region. The humongous bastions are the main reminders of the former use of the building, plus the thick walls and gates testifying to its use as a fortification. To be honest, there’s not much to see as much of the inside is ruins and the only functional buildings are the Azam Khan Sarai, Bhadra Kali Temple and clock tower as entrance to the bastions have been blocked off (I tried to climb it).

The only sad thing about this wonderful fort is that there is no guide around to explain about its rich colorful history to visitors. It has great Gun slits, false entrances, cul-de-sacs, secret tunnel passages, ancient clocks, lightning rods, double parapet watch towers, performance stages and private viewing stations for olden day 'queens', hangman plank, solid in breakable doors and what not.
Bhadra fort brings out the historical elements of Mughal, Maratha, and British architecture as well as their respective military protocols in a unique fashion. A truly must visit place. Spend at least an hour here. The place/area is small and won't take up much of your time unless you are archeologically inclined.

Historical landmark built during the Sultanate Period but now looks like an open crowded market and has lost its original character.
Could not locate the entry point, hence saw only the outer façade and ASI it seems is least interested in maintaining the fort. Encroachments everywhere.
Guess, to get a clear view of the fort one needs to visit before 8AM when the vendors are yet to set shop.
As a tourist, one can skip this and there are other major attractions nearby where time can be spent well.
For those into shopping, this place is heaven.

you can skip this one as it is under construction, and would take more than a year to be on track.. there is nothing really to see here, the ASI staff is really helpful and can open up doors to their terrace to help you wander around, you can get a glimpse of the areas all around.. however the history behind the fort is not explained clearly.. however kids will love this one.. there are some really interesting food joints around this place.. to try out the typical gujrati snack..s

Bhadra fort is in Middle of Ahmedabad near Lal darwaja. The Rakshak Goddess of Ahmedabad, Bhadrakali, resides here and the place is called Bhadrakali Temple. The Fort was Built by Ahmedshah 1, founder of Ahmedabad before 700 years. AMC and ASI Combindely renovated the fort in 2014. In most part Govt. Offices and Courts are there in Fort. The Monument requires more attenion.

Bhadra Forth today protects the entrance to the old town in Ahmedabad. It is not very well preserved, but it is worth to see it, together with Bhadrakall Temple. The traditional market next to it is very nice, too.

IT is a heritage monument and well preserved. Located in the central part of old city. This place is surrounded by stalls and hawkers. Surroundings are not well kept. It has beautiful architecture.

Bhadra fort is said to take its name from fort in Patan which was earlier capital of the kings of Gujarat. The only remaining part of the palace complex is a gateway and some remains of wall. The palace, probably demolished/ burnt down, was standing where present day city bus stand is located, close to the river. The Bhadra gateway connected or separated the royals from the people.
Once it was also a place where each ruler wanted to leave his mark. The small gate still standing has constructions from Muslim, Mughal, Maratha and British, all within the small remains of walls and other small enclosures.
Very good part of the fort is the view it offers from top. You have to climb up through back of the bhadra temple through ASI office situated on first floor and request them for the key. Usually they are very helpful.
With lot of new construction going on, it may be difficult and not really as good a view, but once the area outside of it also supported livelihoods of hundreds of vendors and made the place alive in real Indian sense. With manicured plazas though it may now look 'beautiful'.

The fort is surrounded by many vendors but it's a nice touch of reality. It was probably the same way hundreds of years ago with many people around the area also, so not much has changed.
