While the museum itself has a great collection of textiles, it can be explored only by experts or with a good guide. You would need an appointment and a knowledgeable person to get the best out of this.

India has an unbelievable tradition in textiles; for thousands of years people have been spinning, weaving, dyeing, printing, embroidering incredible fabrics. The Country itself is so vast that each region produced fairly different styles, and it is hard to get to know them all. During a recent visit to Ahmedabad, I had the (fortunate) opportunity to go visit this museum... More

A group of 18 textile artists from the UK visited the museum and did the tour with the rather inflexible sergeant major type tour guide. It was a huge shame that, knowing our interest, she didn't feel able to tailor the tour for us and we were shunted along at great speed when we would have much preferred to have... More

I had heard that the Calico Museum was a must-do in Ahmedabad. The website does inform that the museum can be accessed through a guided-tour only, which takes place once a day and is limited to 20 participants. What was a surprise, however, was that the tours were booked out months in advance. Since I had a limited stop in... More

My colleagues and I had been trying for 5 days to get in touch with the museum. Neither at the door, nor via phone nor via email a booking was possible. Not even at the entrance it was possible to book. In the end, they sent us a mail saying, that the textiles need to be protected from visitors which... More

I was in for a pleasant surprise when my wife insisted on visiting the Calico Museum and I accompanied to satisfy her. A private collection maintained by the Sarabhai Foundation is a tribute to our craftsmen of yesteryear who are fast dwindling. It covers the the skill and artistic beauty of the entire country under one roof with great detail.... More

This is the private collection of the Sarabhai family and is housed in a couple of beautiful colonial mansions. The number of visitors is limited to 20 a day so you will need to book tickets ahead of your visit. You are required to visit with a guide. The collecton is simply amazing. However, the guide likes to keep the... More

For textile enthusiasts, this is paradise! The extensive collection has been preserved with consultation from a team of European preservation experts, resulting in most of the fabrics being covered in plastic. Although a bit disconcerting at first, the plastic isn't very noticeable after a short time. The only way to get into the museum is on a guided tour, which... More

The guided tour tried to cover the whole museum at breakneck speed, so there was little or no time to actually look at the exhibits, which were in any case often poorly displayed in plastic. There was no sign of the catalogues or notes in each gallery promised by the website. The guide was unsympathetic and her usual response to... More

It's a heaven for anyone interested in textile. But anybody who enjoys exploring would definitely love the experience. You need to take prior booking for entry, they only offer guided tour which lasts for apprx 1.5hrs. Need to book weeks in prior during Jan-March. The best part is that you don't need to pay anything for the tour, everything's on-the-house;... More
