- Easwaran HNavi Mumbai, India25 contributionsExpensive street foodThe street food is expensive & the place is crowded, unhygienic & noisy. The smell of petrol & diesel is nauseating. Food is tasty though. Elderly persons are bound to get stomach upset. Kulfi & Fruit shots are good. I would rather pay a little more & dine in a good restaurant.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 November 2023
- MaayaMumbai, India57 contributionsExpensive Street FoodSituated in old city of Ahmedabad, there are now multiple lanes in manekchowk to satisfy your food cravings. Its a paradise for vegetarians for sure, lets head straight to the review: 1) Food: Multiple veg options to choose from, right from ghotala / gwalior dosa to ice cream sandwiches to jamun shots to kulfis to pulav / pav-bhaji etc, there is something for everyone. 2) Hygiene: Better not to have any expectations as it's street food after all. 3) Costs: Prices have gone up now, can easily compete with prices in Mumbai / other city. 4) VFM: Maybe yes, provided you have big group or family with you. 5) Parking: Ideally one can find free space 200-300 meters away from the lane, though this places is chocoblock even post midnight. 6) Safety: Make sure you take care of your mobile and wallets, as told by many pickpocketing is a common practice here.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 November 2023

Manek Chowk is really overrated. Every city has its own Khau gali and this is Ahmedabad's one of them. The place is crowded as is restricted to a small area, really cramped seating and surrounded by vendors who prepare the food. I feel anything extra doesn't make it tasty or interesting as was the case with most of the dishes. Dosas with lots of butter, sandwiches covered with cheese, dry Manchurian was blood red in color with loads of spice. The grilled sweet potato was nice but the saving grace was roasted almond kulfi. The place can be better with more food options, focus on taste rather than look, better quality.

This is one of the most coolest places that one must visit while in Ahmedabad.. it is only open in the night as it is a market place for gold in the morning. Pineapple cheese sandwich - an original and the Gwalia dosa a must to eat

This is a great place to visit during good weather. Definitely a big NO during rains & peak summers. Having watched youtube videos on how the place transforms from a regular parking space to a night food court, my family & I knew what to expect.
The place is 300 mtrs from the main road. Taxis will refuse to enter the street due to the heavy crowd. Autos will get inside but there is still around 200 mtrs of walking to do. The food stalls start serving food around 8:00 pm. This is the ideal time to arrive as it is easy to get an empty table.
There were unique flavors & we were tempted to order so many items, but we did not want to waste food, hence ordered one dish at a time & shared it. For the price we pay, quantity & quality of food is quite good. As I said in the beginning, good weather is very important otherwise you will not be able to spend adequate time here.

If I could I would rate it 0.
We went in the evening. It's a collection of street food vendors. Tables and chairs are laid out on the street. Some hawkers selling costume jewelry.
It's a filthy place. How anyone can eat sitting there is hard to imagine. It's impossible that any food hygiene would be maintained in such a place
It's crowded and noisy and an experience that one can only call pathetic.

Manek Chowk is highlight of Ahmedabad. It opens when the jewellery market closes, during night. Pav Bhaji, Pizza, Sandwich and Kulfi. There is lots to eat. A food lover would surely love this place. Ahmedabadi Foodies frequently visit this place. Parking would be a problem, so it is suggested to visit via 2 wheeler or rickshaw.

In the evening this market is at its busiest with mainly locals. Preparations are already being made during the day and there is already a lot to see for Westerners. For example, there are several closed streets and patios where mainly vegetables, fruit and herbs are traded.

We went here expecting an awesome 'street' experience. Sorry to say the place is a complete, chaotic let-down. We were actually pushed around as we looked for a table because apparently, the stall owners have a tacit 'turf' marked out, even though the seating appears to be one large cramped mass in the center, with stalls ringing it.
Bhaji paav rules, with most stalls catering to this and sandwiches. Don't quite understand the fascination with sandwiches, but will let that pass. The servers dash about madly, and you're not sure if and who is serving you. The place seems pretty dirty and disorganized. You do ultimately get your plate, and the bhaji pav is nothing special to write home about. The chocolate ice cream sandwich we tried for kicks (as it's so iconic here) made us gag. The only redemption was in the Asharfilal kulfi and ice cream stall.
Finding your way through crazy traffic and teeming lanes to arrive at this place is not worth it. Maybe we were missing something but just can't understand the craze about the place. To truly make this an experience, the civic bodies need to learn from places like the Singapore Hawker Centers.
Would not recommend this to anyone!

This place is safe for female tourist, or not? Because my friend and I want to go to this market around 9 pm. , please tell me.

It is and infact I would say the whole of Ahmedabad is so much safe. People here are laidback and calm and eating out is something which all the Gujjus love to the core. I have seen lot of families also visiting this place in late hours unlike lte night eating joints of Delhi. Have fun.
