Consecrated in 1724, the Dutch Cemetery in Kochi is perhaps the oldest existing European cemetery in India. After defeating the Portuguese in 1663, the Dutch ruled Kochi until the end of the 18th century. There are over one hundred tombs in the cemetery, most employing the Dutch architecture that was prevalent in the 18th and 19th centuries and none of them bearing a cross. The cemetery also served as a burial site for many of the British traders and administrators who ruled Kochi from 1795 until 1947. According to T.W. Venn’s book on the St. Francis Church, the last person to be laid to rest in this cemetery was Captain Joseph Ethelbert Winckler in 1913. The cemetery is now administered by the CSI (Church of South India).

It is generally closed to public. However, one can view from outside as the boundary wall is low. Many movies have been shot here including the Malayalam horror flick-Ezra.

We are staying at the hotel next door, and we find very old cemeteries interesting generally. We wandered over. The place is locked and not looking very well kept I might add. The mosquito population it generates are loving the neglect. Disappointed.

This is the oldest cemetery.
But people aren't allowed inside now.
I had to view it from outside the gate.
Quite and unusual cemetery.
Do have a look if they allow you inside.

The Dutch cemetery in Fort Kochi was consecrated in 1724 AD and is believed to be the oldest Dutch cemetery in India. There are 104 tombs in the cemetery which are built in Dutch architecture of that period, many are built of granite and few of red stone. There are small and big tombstones and the inscriptions on the epitaphs are in ancient Dutch script. The cemetery is being managed by the Church of South India (CSI) and the St. Francis CSI Church of Fort Kochi maintains a record of the people buried here. The cemetery is just few minutes walk from the Fort Kochi beach and Vasco de Gama square.

I went to visit the Dutch cemetery on a Sunday morning in May 2018. Unfortunately it wasclosed. What I could see of it through the locked gate was an unkempt mess. What a shame!! I find that often
old cemeteries are fascinating. This is could be a great tourist attraction for those who love history with some TLC and regular opening hours.. In its present state it is an unkempt mess. Not good enough Kochi.

Unfortunately you cannot access the cemetery as the gates are locked, even the local goats are locked out which is a pity as it looks as though it could do with some gardening. Why advertise this attraction if you can't look at it.

When I was standing infront of this closed Dutch Cemetary a Brittish woman and her Dutch husband came with the guard from another church. He had the key and let us in. So great. We wandered around for half an hour and tried to read all the Dutch texts. It was difficult. Unfortunately they don't care for the maintenance of the graves. I did like walking around a bit of Duthc history in this far away country :)

Poorly maintained, you can peek in trough the gate on your way by but there's not much to see. I passed the place around midday and the gates were closed, looked like this is always the case.

This cemetery is closely connected with colonial history of Kochi. Nowadays it looks dark and overgrown, probably not particularly cared for. But so much history appears to be here. Easy to find . Divert from the promenade. Best access from the back.
