This cemetery is closely connected with colonial history of Kochi. Nowadays it looks dark and overgrown, probably not particularly cared for. But so much history appears to be here. Easy to find . Divert from the promenade. Best access from the back.

Visited this cemetery in the 1980s when it was still possible to walk in without any obstacles. Maintenance has remained problematic mainly for financial reasons.. Nowadays it is closed most of the time (only open on request). Peaking over the low walls you can observe some of the partially overgrown tombs. No crosses, as Protestants were not in favour of Catholic custom to put a cross on a grave (or any ornamentation). In the Netherlands crosses were mostly removed during the Reformation (16th century). This cemetery dates from 1724 and is very similar to the ones further east in what is now Indonesia. The Dutch ruled Cochin 1663 - 1795, but after that the British kept using this cemetery well into the 19th century (last burial in 1913).
