We went at the time of an annual festival so the crowds were more than we would have liked. The temple is small and beautiful and very ancient. However, the surroundings, thanks to the crowd of visitors were full of trash. I really felt the local authorities should have taken pains to keep the surroundings clean.

We were there in the weekend trip to Varkala and the temple is close 1 km from the papanasam beach and 10 min walk from our hotel. It is a very big temple and easily can feel the vibe once we entered inside the compound wall. It was really famous and many people over there. A place worth to visit in Varkala..

Always wanted to visit this temple. My first trip was great :). For those prefer not to climb a steep steps, can use the other entrance at the back. The main deity Janarthanar is facing the Sree Padmanatha swamy in Trivandrum (that is what i read). But the crowd here are much easy going and less crowd on non-peak seasons. Unlike Sree Padmanatha swamy temple, there are no specific dress code in this temple. As long as you're in decent attire, you're allowed in. Walking around the temple is pretty soothing experience.

We were curious to visit this temple as we were told that it is 2000 years old. It is very near to Varakala beach, and about 55 kilometers from Trivendrum. We took air-condition bus for Varkala from Trivendrum central Bus stop at 6.10 AM and reached there at about 7.30 AM. Right at the foot steps of the temple, we got down from the bus and climbed about 100 steps to reach the temple. A very large Bunyan tree was seen tall standing. No Photography of the deity, but by paying Rs. 100 you can take pictures in the temple. You will find excellent architect on pillars and sculptures.

There was another tree around which people tie plastic dolls in the hope of blessings to get children. You have to bargain to buy the doll. They will ask for 30-40 rupees a pair but will settle in 20-25 rupees a pair.

You can find the same bus at 8 AM for return journey to Trivendrum. There will be many other ordinary buses also. A good visit.

Janardhana Swami Temple which lies in the direction of Varkala beach is a famous religious site here. This holy shrine is believed to be constructed nearly 2000 years ago. An interesting mythology is behind the construction of this temple. According to this, the Janardhana Swami Temple was built by a Pandyan ruler after Lord Brahma forgave a sin committed by him. Once Lord Brahma through a dream told the King about the idol and its location which was submerged in the sea. He then with the help of some fishermen took out the deity and thus the temple was formed. As per studies done by historians, the original shrine was demolished by the tidal waves and later on it was rebuilt.

You must visit this temple if you are in Varkaka. As a north Indian I was quite worried about the dress code. Gladly except for removing your upper garments for men there were no other issues. I went in jeans since I had not carried any pants with me but it was okay. Avoid torn jeans though. I do not think so it allows foreigners. The idol of lord Vishnu was very beautiful. Must visit if you are in Varkala. You must remember that there are two entrances. At the front entrance you have to climb 50 or so steep steps. There is a back entrance as well which is at the road level and you need not climb any steps. In case you have elder people with you enquire about the entrance where climbing steps is not required.

A wonderful tranquil temple ( except for Diwali fireworks which were scarily loud) Beautiful architecture and a wonderful tree where couples wanting a baby attach a doll and pray to be blessed with a child.

It is not true that non-Hindu are not admitted in this temple. We were admitted even in the inner Sancta sanctorum for a short tour (men have to take off their shirt) and stay for the whole duration of a marriage which was happening that day. It must be a temple dedicated to women and girls, as there is a big Shiva tree fully covered of hanging votive dolls, mingling with the shiva flowers, and some sort of women-priestess singing delicious tunes. And of course the brahmins, poojas, music, and a particularly touching marriage ritual. In spite of the heat, it was a pleasure to spend some hours in here.
