Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This man made waterbody was excavated in 1645 by king Thirumalai Nayakkar when the Nayakkar Mahal. There is a beautiful structure in the middle of this temple tank called the Maiya Mandapam. In the summer months the tank is empty. After the monsoon it brims with water. It is a worthwhile landmark to visit

This listing is about the pond or tank (teppakulam means pond), not the temple in the middle. It dates from 1645 when the Vaigai river clay deposits were dug out to make bricks for the construction of a palace. The pond is linked with the nearby Vaigai river.

Still a beautiful sight, especially after dark when the temple is lit. During Thaipusam (full moon festival) floats transport the idols of Meenakshi and Sundareshwarar to Mariamman temple.

The location is less congested than the area around the Meenakshi temple complex. Very good for a walk, especially in the evening or early morning.

This temple built in the middle of a man-made pond, which dries up in the summer and becomes a play ground for Cricket playing nation. The Temple is surrounded by water only for 2-3 months and then it dries up.
You need to walk down to reach there and its calm and serene. This tank was dug by Tirumala Nayaka. It is the biggest tank of its kind in Tamil Nadu.

Teppakulam is situated 2 Kms from Meenakshi Amman Temple. Two temples named Mariamman Temple and Muktheeswarar temple were near by this Teppakulam. This Pond will be dry almost 9 months in a year and water is full in the pond during rainy season. This pond is approximately 305 M long and 290 M wide and biggest pond in Tamilnadu. In centre of the pond, maiya(Center) mandapam is there. Mukuruny Vinayakar idol in Meenakshi Amman Temple is believed to be found during excavation process of this pond. It is nice place to spend during evening hours.

A nice place to visit. Evening would be right time to visit. One need 15 mins to round the place which we did. We did not have the opportunity to go inside. Also we do not know whether there exists such opportunity.

Marred somewhat by garbage, like too many historic and otherwise picturesque sites in Tamil Nadu. It's a quick stop to admire, take a couple of pictures, and move on. I would make it a stop on the way to Rameswaram, rather than going there as your sole objective for the morning or afternoon.

This vast area is totally dry for the past 2 or three years. Not maintained. But now is quite used like a park. Evening is a nice time to spend there for people watching. And the small eateries around it where u can buy hot spicy chats to fresh fruits and ice cream are the simple things to enjoy along with the evening breeze. The place is not much crowded during the weekdays. U can always find a place to sit on the short walls around the place. Since there is no beach in madurai i guess people prefer coming here to get some air. There is a history to this place, which u can look it up on wiki.

Good spacious pond and a neglected place for maintenance. People through food items inside and government should take care to deepen the pond and arrange a service to go to the middle of the pond.

One of the famous Landmarks in Madurai. Mariamman Teppakulam is pretty famous old spots in Madurai. Previously it had adequate gallons of water but for now it has less than half of it.
