Wonderful exhibits on the freedom struggle as well as the life of Gandhiji.
The museum has the blood stained clothes that the Mahathma was wearing when he was gunned down - will surely move one to tears.
Highly recommend to take little children along so that they can learn about the lives and contributions made by freedom fighters for the sake of the nation.

While I’m grateful that a museum honoring Gandhi exists here, this was very poorly done. Most of the museum was a chronology of European imperialism and the resistance to it, starting with the arrival of Vasco DaGama from Portugal in 1498 with far too much focus on military battles and various Indian historical personages. Much of the signage was only in Tamil (or maybe it was Hindi), and the English-language explanations were unfocused (as were many of the photos). There were a few panels about Gandhi’s life, a little about his philosophy, and barely anything about his strategy and tactics that succeeded in bringing down an empire, nonviolently. And I don’t think the exhibits have been updated since the museum opened in the 1950s. Someone coming in who knew little about Gandhi or Indian history would come away with a very distorted picture.
So why do I still recommend going? Because…
1) I am deeply grateful for the work Gandhi did for almost half a century on two continents, his influence on people like Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and the revolutionaries of Arab Spring.
2) In spite of the low quality of the exhibits, I still found it interesting enough to read every English-language description, look at every photo, and contemplate how one person can indeed change the world, and even mobilize millions to help. That took an hour and a quarter.
3) Without going, we never would have found the wonderful exhibit of Tamil paintings a few hundred yards up the road.

A visit to the National Gandhi Museum is a must whilst in Madurai. Set in a beautiful old building, the first part of the exhibition details the history of India, with its numerous invasions and wars, via a series of well documented panels. It’s a lot to take in, but this sobering and thought provoking reading is worthwhile.
The next section is where you learn about the Father of the Nation: from his early years in South Africa, throughout his fight for independence and up to his death. It’s a powerful and inspirational story. Several artefacts and personal belongings can be seen, including a portion of the actual loincloth he was assassinated in.

There's not much to see.
The main topic of the meseum is india's fight for freedom which is really intersting. However, most of the story is just written on boards and there's not much items to see. Bottom line - go to wikipedia, it's pretty much the same.

This is a great museum to visit for anybody interested in the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi. It is interestingly laid out. It also has on display a piece of the garment that the Mahatma wore when he was killed. Not many people know that Gandhi as young lawyer shed his dapper Western clothes for his trademark Khadhar garment that he wore for the rest of his life right here in Madurai. The building itself is interesting in that it was built around 1670as a summer palace for the Nayakkan royal family. Rani Mangammal, the powerful Nayakkan Queen lived here when she was in Madurai.

This museum in Madurai is one of the 5 Gandhi Sangrahalya in India. It is a great place to learn history and fight for freedom. You can see lot of objects and writings from Gandhiji. You can buy books and souvenirs here. The blood stained clothes of Mahatma Gandhi is must see in the museum. Have a look at the gallery of images from the Indian freedom movement days. Also don't forget to visit the library in the north wing. Locker rooms are available and pets are not allowed in the premises. This museum is located in the heart of city and hence accessible by bus, car, taxi, hired taxi, auto etc.

We only got to spend about 40 minutes here because the museum closes at 1, but that seemed like plenty of time. There's a LOT to read (not all of which seems necessary), some original artifacts of Gandhi's and a bunch of reproductions. We came here because it was included in our tour but I wouldn't have been upset if we missed it. There's also a recreation of the house where he was born/raised (but you can't go inside) and some of his ashes are also onsite.

Despite nothing on google or the Madurai tourism webpage it turns out the main museum is shut for renovations. They have left open one very small room displaying a couple of posters which talk through some of the cases he worked on as a lawyer but this isn’t worth visiting. The rest of the site is shut.

This was my third visit to this museum where I took a group of 11 people..big disappointment..dusty museum. The exhibits are poorly highlighted and also full of dust. Only two rooms were available..one wing of the museum seems to be being restored..I had the memory of letters on display which I did not find.. If not for the beauty of the building, I regretted this visit which disappointed us greatly.

Madurai is generally famous for its fabled Meenakshi Temple , and I believe that several travellers avoid visiting the Gandhi Museum . Having visited the Museum recently, I am of the firm opinion that it must rank as No.2 attraction in the City of Temples, that Madurai is known as .
Gandhi museum is located little outside the crowded city in a serene environment . The museum provides a glimpse into the country's quest for independence from the colonial rule during 17th-19th century and the great contribution that the "naked fakir " - as Mahatma Gandhi was known as - made in freeing India through the path of non-violence .You can see one of the original spectacles that Gandhiji wore and replicas of some of the personal belongings of Gandhiji are also on display. However, it is a heart rending sight looking at the blood stained clothes that Gandhiji wore on the day he was shot, on 30 January 1948 . Not to be missed .
