About
Wildlife SOS Agra Bear Rescue Facility is home to around 100 sloth bears that were rescued from the brutal practice of bear dancing. The kalandar gypsies that depended on exploiting these bears were established in alternative livelihoods by Wildlife SOS to ensure the safety of the bears and a legal way of life for the community. This center is run entirely from Donations raised by Wildlife SOS. The Forest Department charges an Admission of Rs 500 for Foreign Nationals and Rs 50 for Indians. These fees do not go to support the bear rescue center. Wildlife SOS offers conservation educational visit combined with interaction with bear experts. A donation is requested from visitors to help care for the animals. Wildlife SOS also runs the Elephant Conservation & Care Center, home to over 32 rescued elephants ; a 15 min drive from the bear sanctuary.

- KathBWolverhampton, United Kingdom148 contributionsA very special place, especially for people who are passionate about animal welfareThe SOS bear and elephant rescue centres are located an hour from the centre of Agra. Regardless of distance we decided we wanted to visit to learn more about the animals and support the work they are doing and booked a taxi driver for the day at a cost of 3,500RS. Visiting the 2 centres also presented an ideal opportunity to visit the Tomb of Akbar the Great which is on route and quieter than the main sites. We contacted SOS direct to arrange our tour as you cannot just turn up. Visits are limited for animal welfare. We had a really interesting educational tour of both SOS facilities. If you have a passion and interest in animal welfare then you will enjoy a visit here, however if you are expecting an experience that is similar to a zoo then you will be disappointed. They ask for a donation of 2,500RS per person and we were happy to pay this as we really enjoyed our tour. It is also important to understand that without donations they are unable to continue the amazing work they do. Hearing the history of the animals is heart breaking, however we felt happy this organisation exists and there are people who work so hard and passionately to ensure the animals can live out the remainder of their lives in a happy place. Note there is also a small charge levied by the bird sanctuary. This is because SOS is located within the grounds and unfortunately this charge is unavoidable. This was slightly frustrating, as birds are only there during the winter and were there out of season. In summary a very special place.Thank you for your kind words about our efforts to protect the animals. - Harry WWolverhampton, United Kingdom9 contributionsA conservation center that really does careI must admit I’m a little skeptical whenever I see the word ‘sanctuary’ or ‘rehabilitation’, but Wildlife SOS is the first place I’ve seen that really do put the animals first. Me and my partner chose to do the Elephant Conservation option. Himanshu- our guide is a credit to the organisation, he explained everything that Wildife SOS are involved in and described the Center as a retirement home, which we thought was fantastic. All of the elephants at Wildife SOS have been rescued and have suffered horrific abuse over their lives, and Wildlife SOS’s main focus is to educate the visitors and help rehabilitate the elephants mental and physical trauma so they can enjoy what time they have left. This is a must for anybody interested in conservation and absolutely not for anybody wishing to ride, feed, paint or even touch an elephant. Keep up the great work guys!!Thank you for your kind words about our efforts to protect the animals. - Andrew W68 contributionsForget the Taj Mahal - come here!My visit to Wildlife SOS' Bear and Elephant Sanctuaries were the highlight of my trip to India. It was so inspirational to see and hear from Shivam about the rescue of elephants from the street and the great facility they have built to provide them with the care and love they need. I could have spent days just watching them. I knew less about the plight of dancing bears but it was interesting to hear from Harendra about how every dancing bear has now been rescued and see how they're enjoying relaxing in their new home. I might have liked to spend a bit longer just observing but it was nice to have some time to walk around the beautiful bird sanctuary too.Thank you for your kind words about our efforts to protect the animals. - Q789BXManchester, United Kingdom5 contributionsAwesome - please book this rather than a trip that allows elephant painting/ ridingAn amazing place. I love animals and wanted to see some Elephants on my trip to India but I’m always thoughtful about their welfare. I’m so glad that i chose to visit SOS rather than contribute to their misery by buying into a trip that allows you to paint or ride the elephants. I learned so much and had a wonderful experience observing them in a setting that’s much better for their well-being. The project takes care of elephants which have been rescued and aims to end the practice of keeping them in captivity’s please, please consider this much better option before you book onto anything elseThank you for your kind words about our efforts to protect the animals. - christine g11 contributionseducational, beautiful animalsOn recomendation: We pre booked, were given a time slot and visited Elephant SOS. What an amazing job this centre is doing for previously abused and exploited elephants. They are given a personalised healthy diet and on going veterinary care. It is the equivalent of a nursing/care home. No elephant rides, painting or made to perform tricks. This centre is about nursing and on going care for these beautiful animals. Some very sad stories about some of the elephants but good to see them live out the rest of their lives being cared for in comfort.Thank you for your kind words about our efforts to protect the animals. My kid enjoyed thoroughly after meeting the Elephants and Bears. The story of each rescue of the bears and elephants is heart touching but the work that goes behind the rehab is very very nice. Good Work Geeta and kartik and all the other volunteers like Himanshu and Harinder. Very neat and clean . - A S14 contributionsA must visitBrilliant place. The staff were amazing and the bears (and to be honest, all the wildlife there) were happy and relaxed. The bears are very obviously well cared for and are allowed to follow their natural nocturnal habits. That being said, we saw 5 bears who woke for their fruit meal - that was a huge bonus! I remember well seeing dancing bears at Dhabas on multiple trips to India in the 90’s and this dedicated group of conservationalists really have stopped this practice. But the most impressive thing was their holistic approach which absolutely blew all of us away. Our group included child protection officers and health care workers and we wish the organisations we work for could be this holistic! Travel advice: contact the organisation and give a donation to then visit as a donor. The person who answered my email actually met us at the gate and took us for the tour. He also let the bird sanctuary (we had to pass through) know we were coming. It is so rare to find such a personal touch. I will absolutely be visiting, but more importantly, donating again. I am a wildlife professional and I really recommend everyone to visit this place. Elephants are taken care by highest veterinarian and animal - welfare standards. The guide was very professional, informative and kind. This is not a place where you will make selfies with elephants, but a place that will make you understand all the suffering these magnificent animals are going trough when abused for entertainment. From the city you will have to take a taxi to get there (uber and ola are really cheap for European standards) and arrange with a driver t wait for you until you finish your visit.

Very nice place. You can see a broutally wounded bears get their life back. I got a very informative tour with Miss Johi.
After the sanctuary you can have a very nice walk on the lake shore and see some birds species. If you are lucky, you will see pelikans and cranes landing on the water.

Inspiring Place to Visit and so Rewarding. Helped build bear climbing frames, cut food and feed them and paint the places they sleep at night. Loved every minute and was really pleased they were safe and no longercused for dancing. What was also great was some of the old owners who used them to dance were now using there skills and knowledge of the bears to keep them safe and well by working at the centre.

Had a fantastic time understanding the functioning of the WILDLIFE SOS team. It is so heartening to see the good work all of them are doing to rescue the bears and taking care of them thereafter. Mr. Romaan our guide was patiently answering and explaining all the points and questions right from entering the centre and till we exited. I highly recommend visiting the centre so that the connection between humans and animals is rekindled and we develop some compassion in our hearts to let these beautiful creatures coexist with us. They deserve a beautiful life too!

I really liked the place. Bears may be hard to spot, but I liked the way they explain the history and the intent behind this place. If you pay some donation, they can take you inside near the bear cage and explain more details, otherwise the tour will last hardly few minutes.

We visited the elephant sanctuary. It was a amazing experience. Their ethical and humane treatment of animals is fantastic. You can tell they put a lot of thought and care into improving the elephants’ daily lives. They do not do rides or interactions here, because that’s what is best for the animal, but you do have the opportunity to get very close and observe their daily care. Our guide was excellent and we could tell he was very passionate about the subject. I would recommend this elephant experience as the only experience one should take if you truly care for the animals.

Got taken around by the awesome caretaker Roman, who is very passionate about working in the rescue center.
Please book a visit in advance on their website and be ready to make a donation to the center in case you want to have an extended tour around the facility.
Overall the entry fee is 350 for adult and 1000 extra if you have a large camera.

Hi, I'm not from India but I want to volunteer for wildlife sos. Can I go at anytime or does the organizer have a specific time? Will I have to pay for airfare, meals, and accommodation by myself, or does the organization provide some support? And will i receive any certification after finishing the tenure? Thank you.

If a tax is suggested what should I be paying to ensure I don't get ripped off?
Thank you!

We used an Uber to get there and back to the hotel. One way was 10 or 11 euro's.

What is the best time of day to visit in order to experience the elephants?
Written 14 March 2019
We booked a specific time slot via the SOS Elephant Sanctuary website. We arrived for the mid-day visiting slot and were there for 2 hours. We chose this start time as we were staying in Bharatpur and it was over an hours drive away. They have a shop with items made by local people with bags, throws, carved items, fridge magnets, T-Shirts, etc. All sales help them raise funds to save more elephants and buy extra land to keep them. There is also a cafeteria for drinks and light snacks. Admission is by a donation (currently 1500INR per person) Do go if you have the chance. You will be moved by the experience.

I have a passion to work in wild and for wild animals. I got to know about the volunteering programm and am keen to volunteer in wildlife SOS, Agra. So i want to know whether we have to pay any fee for staying there for 5-6 days, like fee for fooding and hostel charges, and all..
so please provide all the necessary details so that any person interested to volunteer may find it helpfull.
Hoping for any relevant answer/reply.
