- WalkingPointKumamoto, Japan410 contributionsEarly evening and enthrallingArguably the best place to see the ceremony. Options to view are: renting a seat in one of the 14+ open boats facing the ceremony platform, renting a chair on an overlooking balcony or standing in the crowd. I urge avoiding remaining in the crowd, and haggle a seat on a balcony or boat. Price is down to your haggling skills. R300 was good for a balcony. Go early to secure a good view. It's fabulous.Visited September 2023Travelled on businessWritten 20 September 2023
- Ram GautamKathmandu, Nepal972 contributionsHara Hara GangeI feel so lucky I got a front-row sitting space even though we were late for the arati. A guy from the management team saw me with a few old fellows (my mom and my two elderly friends) so he made a sitting arrangement for all four of us, without charging a single penny, which I found amazing and was very thankful to him. The last time I was there couldn't get a sitting spot so had to skip the Arati mid-way, this time around stayed there till the end... - LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,633 contributionsI watched my first AArthi Ceremony HereAfter the various ghats located along the Ganges River by boat, we stopped here to watch the Aarthi Ceremony. There were 6 priests that participated, chanting in unison and offering various gifts to the Goddess. There are places to sit down, watching the back of the priests. Note that they turn around , however, and face those seated behind them during the ceremony. People watching infront of the priests do not have places to sit down. Took several short videos and phtos here.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 March 2024
- AmulAwasthyPune, India4,117 contributionsMemorableGanga Aarti is a memorable Experience. People used to gather on the ghats at least two hours before the aarti starts for better viewing experience. Aarti is some where 45 Min Long and is a treat to watch. Ensure you have grabbed a seat before it gets too crowded. If you are there for more than a day than give it a try every evening from different location if possible you wont regret it, MemorableVisited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 April 2024
- Norrol4 contributionsHighly recomended.Watched Ganga aarti live from boat. Highly recommend not going in boat and watching it from outside as it might be good because most of the people were in boats rather than being present there at the ghat. So Be at Ghat. Also if you want to go in boat, do bargaining, they will reduce the fare. When i took the ride in June, they took 1000 for 7 people while the fare was 300/person.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 6 August 2024

Among 84 ghats in Varanasi, Dasaswamedh Ghat is most famous. According to one legend it was created by Lord Brahma to welcome Lord Shiva. Everyday in the evening Ganga Aarti is done here at sunset time. Thousands of people gather here to see this beautiful religious Aarti. Dasaswamedh ghat and Ganga Aarti are the top most attraction of Varanasi visit. Now days this ghat is maintained very well, thanks to PM Mr. Modi.

We visited both during the day while walking the Ghats and again in the evening for the Gangaa Aarti. That in itself is a sight. Hundreds of people milling around prior to the ceremony and even more manage to squeeze in during the ceremony. Get there early, it started after sunset aroung 6pm but the free chairs on the promenade were filling up at 4pm. We decided to sit on a boat moored by the performance area as much of the ceremony faces the holy Ganges river. This quickly filled up too. 200rupees per person but barter hard as they started at 500. Of course locals pay 100! The religous ceremony itself was well worth the wait. Get a Tilarka painted on your forehead by one of the many sellers for 20 rupees. Everyone has them. All is all well worth the effort and a memorable evening not to be forgotten

Ganga aarti means worship of Ganga. Lots of people visit this place for Ganga aarti everyday at 06:00 pm - 07:00 pm (Daily). The priest hold large fire bowls in their hands, the bells in the temples at the Ghat start ringing and the chants of mantras flowing out in the air. People float diyas, with flowers on Ganga. The shadow reflects on the river and lighting diyas on flowing Ganga looks so beautiful that cannot be expressed in words. It is a very fascinating experience to participate in the Ganga Aarati performed in the evening at Dashaswamedh ghat. This place is famous for its Ganga Aarti at dusk among tourists as well as devotees.

We were there with family. We took boat ride, which was good. Charges were Rs. 50 per person and it took near about 30 minutes to see some ghats. It was a motorised boat running on diesel set. For Arti we took our place nearly at about 5 pm. Arti started at 6.45 and lasted for nearly 45 minutes. If you want to see Arti from a good location, reach till 5.30 pm. Another option is boat with deck facility. You may take a seat on the deck of a boat and watch the Aarti. I found several families sitting on the boats just in front of Arti place - a good option for late comers.
One thing which upset me was a big SUV standing in the middle of road through which devotees were returning after watching Aart. We found it while returning from Aarti and it was having a sticker of some Hindu Organisation. This VIP culture upset me very much and lessen the faith and regard in the Hindu system.

Dashashwamedh Ghat is the most famous ghat in Varanasi on the banks of sacred river Ganga in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. People take bath here and widely visited by pilgrims. It is not far from Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Everyday in the evening Aarti of the Ganga river is performed where several priests jointly perform the aarti which lasts for about half an hour. It is believed that lord Brahma sacrificed ten horses during Dasa-Ashwamedha yajna performed here hence the name. Must see.

The main ghat of Varanasi where there is action 24/7, the epitome is the Ganga Aarti performed every evening, witnessed by tens of thousands from the shore and from the river on boats. An elaborate affair that is truly breathtaking. Once a filthy spot, now it is absolutely clean and gleaming.

This is one of the more entertaining of all the Ghats in Varanasi especially if you attend the evening aarti where you get to see the (I think) priests performing several ceremonies. They call them ceremonies, but to me they look like a coordinated boy band dance routine. Along with the Manikarnika, Dashashwamedh is definitely one Ghat worth seeing in Varanasi.

Dashashwamedh Ghat is the heart of the action and the top attraction in Varanasi.
The perfect way to see all the ghats in Varanasi is - boat Tour. Agents will come to you when you will be nearby ghats and negotiate with you, make sure that before riding. but again, to see 130 ghats and their beauty, you must have this in Varanasi.
One of the oldest and holiest Varanasi ghats, According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma created the ghat to welcome Lord Shiva.
The name 'Dashashwamedh' means the place where Lord Brahma sacrificed ten horses. It is also said that Bajirao Peshwa I had the ghat reconstructed in 1740 AD. It was later constructed over by the queen of Indore, Ahilyabai Holkar, in 1774.
it's where the famous Ganga aarti takes place every evening when the whole ghat comes to life when several priests perform the aarti in the grandest manner!.

Yes, it is safe anytime in the year!

We are planning a trip of Varanasi on 16th November. How will the weather be ? We don’t want a foggy climate at the time of sunrise and sunset , that will spoil the view from the ghats . Will it be cold ?

Is Varanasi safe for travelling with children and family? Where should we stay... The reverside area or centre of the city?
Written 9 May 2019
There is no problem with regard to travelling with children in Varanasi. It is better to stay far from riverside and to stay in Central area, as it is convenient to move to any part of the city easily with many conveyance options available.
