Whilst visiting Rishikesh, I was so excited to be near a national park so booked a safari. Before booking, I contacted Rajaji National Park on WhatsApp to ask what safari (there are multiple) is best for seeing tigers and large animals along with other questions. I also looked everywhere on their official website to find out which time of day is best for safari to see big animals like elephants but found nothing. After no reply on WhatsApp from the park I decided to book a safari early morning just after sunrise as the general consensus from google said early morning is best.
I saw four peacocks, two deer and … rocks. The safari driver asked why I didn’t come at night/sunset because that’s when the elephants and leopards come out but I told him that sadly no one made me aware of this. Don’t get me wrong, the park is very nice but to charge 3000 a jeep for a short ride around just to see this is disappointing and scamming behaviour. Had Rajaji national park replied to my WhatsApp and/or provided accurate information on their website I could have attended the right safari at the right time but instead they allowed me to waste my money.

Rajaji Tiger Reserve has many ranges. I have ben to it through Chilla range which is a famous range of this reserve. We stayed near the gate and booked a vehicle previous evening for an early morning safari, as it is said that if you go early then you may spot animals, once the number of vehicles increased the animals go away dip into the jungle. But we were in second number vehicle, but still not able to see any big animals. We saw some peacocks, deer and a herd of elephants far away. In the middle of the safari driver stops at a house for tea and to use restroom. So if you are lucky then you may see some other animals otherwise enjoy the safari inside the jungle.

What a beautiful, hidden secret. The 42km jeep safari is a gorgeous drive whether you see tigers and leopards or you don't (we didn't). The landscape is beautiful, serene and a wonderful experience through sal and other forest types.
We took the safari through the Rajaji Retreat, their jeep was in good shape and clean too. Kundan-ji was our guide, he was very knowledgeable about the animals and birds- and we had a wonderful experience sighting families of elephants, cheetal, sambal, wild boars, peacocks, mongooses, langurs, birds including hornbills, bee eaters, kingfishers, drongos, stone chats, etc. We saw tracks of tigers, but not the tiger itself.
I would recommend renting binoculars, being patient, and enjoying all the flora, fauna, wildlife and serenity and not focus on only the tigers.
We visited on our way back from Rishikesh, and did the afternoon safari which runs for 2-3 hours, so do plan your time accordingly. Also, a very scenic drive.

This is not like a normal National park like Corbett or Ranthambore. We took the Chilla Route and the drivers there don’t have any knowledge of wildlife. They only take you for a jungle “drive” and not a safari and charge 4.5k for that. Guides aren’t available. Any sighting or spotting will be possible only if you have a keen eye. The drivers just keep showing you deer and peacocks. Ours couldn’t even spot a langur. They can’t spot birds either. All the wildlife we saw was courtesy our own ability to spot them out. The driver would just “drive” and wasn’t even looking around.

The reserve was a beautiful and quiet place that was full of wild animals. I would recommend binoculars as they were quite far way. We had a great time with Mohan's Adventure Tours and our guide, Faizan, and extremely helpful. We saw many animals including: Spotted Deer, Sambars (type of deer), Monkeys, Peacocks, Parrots, Horses (from nearby village), Kingfishers, and even Elephants! Overall it was a wonderful time but I would recommend it in the summer as it was pretty cold.

Visited the Park from Ranipur side (Haridwar), It was nice to get picked up from the hotel ! Not a very dense jungle with plenty of deers, Sambar deer. peacocks, Nilguy etc ! Was informed that this area is inhabited by leopards too ! We were lucky to spot one who was resting may be after a kill! It was a thrilling moments with a leopard in
visible distance ! Jeep is absolutely open ! On return could see a dancing peacock enjoying its time ! Afternoon heat was not very pleasant ! Early morning is better in summer time !

We were in Rishikesh last week and read in the newspapers that the Govt. of India has recognised this park as a National park and as a Tiger Reserve. Being wild life enthusiast having been to many national parks across India, we were excited at this.
Looked at their website and tried to call all the numbers mentioned but none of them were correct.
We got info from our hotel that the park timings are 6.00am - 9.00am and 3.00pm - 6.00pm.
My wife and myself decided to opt for a 3.00pm slot and landed up at the Chilla gate at 2.30.
The moment we arrived we surrounded by some touts selling park tickets and organising vehicle. We avoided all of them.
The ticketing office strangely opens at 3.00pm and we were asked to go to the touts to inquire if a vehicle was available. I protested as I wanted to opt for a vehicle given by the park authorities. They replied that they were full and I had no option but to go to the touts if I wanted to go inside. There were hardly any visitors at that time. To be precise there about 12 visitors including us and there was no way the vehicles would have been booked. Anyway I approached the touts for a vehicle and they said Rs. 2,100/- incl of the park entry fees, driver fees and the vehicle. The amount needed to be paid to them and not in the booking office. we obliged and immediately assigned a Gypsy. the driver approached us saying its very warm and we should leave after 3.30pm. The sun is out till 6.45 and did not understand the logic. Anyway we requested him to leave immediately as the gates to the park were open. To this he replied that he will be back in 2 min. At this point we should have realised that its nothing but a scam. We waited for about 15 min and when the driver returned he asked us to get in the vehicle. On inquiring he mentioned that he went to get his shirt. We wanted a guide as most of the national parks in India have a compulsory guideline to have a local guide. To this the driver replied saying he was the guide.
We really should have aborted our visit at this juncture but we did not. We were about to face the worst nightmare we would have ever experienced.
While waiting for the driver we had seen two vehicles entering the park each with about 5-6 visitors in the vehicle. When we lined up at the gate, instead of being asked for ID's or being checked for security the main security guard jumped into the front seat of the car. The gates opened and we got inside the park. the security personnel was heavily drunk and was stinking of alcohol. He was armed with a rifle and hence we did not protest. For 15 min we were scared and wandering what should be the next step. After 15 min we saw a sigh of relief as the driver stopped at a first check post. The driver told us that after this spot we will not be able to get off the vehicle. The driver then disappeared. We were stuck in the vehicle with this drunk security guard who now had dozed off. We could see that there were two people who looked like police or security officers sipping tea outside the check post. I gathered courage and approached to one of them saying that we had a drunk security guy in our car and he did not take our permission and he just jumped into the car. Hoping that these guys would help us but we were wrong. We were stunned and frozen to the reply. The officer said that the security guy in the car was not well and he would get off on the way. He simply told us to go to the car.
At this point my wife was really scared as we did not know what to do, whom to speak to neither there is any mobile coverage. Our driver also had disappeared.
While waiting we realised that we were not given any park entry receipts, nor any receipts for the vehicle or identity of the driver. This made us believe that we were in for something dangerous. it all looked like a syndicate and if we would have raised an alarm then we would have been branded as illegal entrants as we did not have any receipts.
At about 4.15pm the driver returned and we pleaded him to take us back to the gate. He said the route is a one way and that we would reach the gate only at 6.00pm. We pleaded him to follow the route quickly as by now we were not interested in any wildlife.
The drunk security person was asleep all this while and while we were discussing with the driver he woke up and screamed at the driver that he took too long and that he wanted to be dropped at the earliest.
The driver now started the vehicle and started speeding. At some stretches he exceeded 40 km/h.
We were in a panic situation but were clueless and helpless.
After about 20 min of fast driving in the park we crossed by the second check post. To our horror another security staff got into our car without asking us and he made himself comfortable in the 3rd row of the vehicle. By now we were completely scared and praying that we reach to the gate in one piece.
At this check point there were two more security guards who started having a chat with the drunk guy and discussing the reason for celebration. after about 10 min chat the guy asked the driver to move forward.
After another 20 min of fast driving and extremely tensed and stressed time for us, the drunk guy finally got off the vehicle to his home.
It was such a sigh of relief but we knew we were not safe till we reached the gate as we had another security guy in the vehicle. At about 5.20 we reached the gate and we were relieved but angry and upset to what has happened.
My wife was shivering by now and quickly made her comfortable in our car.
I looked out for any police or govt officials but there was no one. The ticketing office was closed and there was no one or no where a complaint could be lodged.
I requested the driver to give us the receipts and he gave us receipts of the park entry fees for the two us. No vehicle entry and drivers fees receipt was given.
It is a massive syndicate between some local guys, park officials and security force.
Please stay away from here and tourist can def avoid this safari.
I am hoping to take this incident with the park authorities and I hope this review reaches out to them.

I took a day trip out to Rajaji National Park from Haridwar to do a safari. There’s lots of drivers waiting around, so there should be no trouble getting transport around the park. I saw lots of wild animals, but didn’t get to see any tigers. One of the best sights was a pair of elephants, a mother and her baby that walked with the procession of safari jeeps. That was a great experience.
Be careful about transport back to Haridwar. There are buses that go back and forth between the park and Dehradun or Haridwar. The drivers will say otherwise and attempt to extort a ridiculous amount for a ride back.

How much it will cost if I book a car for we 3 from dehradun to visit rajaji national park & come back to dehradun?
Written 15 April 2022
hi sir can u please recommend which option should we book in rajaji park among chilla, jhilmil and ranipur packages? and also which timing will be better i.e. morning or afternoon slot??
Written 10 January 2020
Sorry to answer you so late. I am not sure about the options. And morning or afternoon slot does not make a big difference. Spotting animals involves patience and luck. Decide what suits you best

How does one reach Rajaji National park from Jolly Grant Airport. and where should one stay while at the national park
Written 30 January 2019
I stayed at Haridwar which is a 1hr drive from the airport. You can then have to work with your hotel which will arrange for the Safari. The Chilla Gate of the park is 8 kms from Haridwar (har ki pauri). Else the northern gate of the Park is a few kms away from Jolly Grant airport. But I am not sure of the stay options there. You may then like to stay in a hotel in Dehradun instead.
Written 5 March 2019
One should avoid the summer and monsoon time. Because the road is very uneven. Besides this you have to ride an open jeep. The jeeps are mostly in very bad condition.
Written 17 July 2019
Do they allow private vehicle inside the park? Do we get specialised birding guides?
Written 9 April 2018
No. You have to leave your car at the parking space of the park.

Is it safe to go to this park with a 11 month old baby, keeping in mind the security and the facilities available?
If yes, which is the safest place nearby to stay for two days?

1) It is jungle out there
2) But the animals are more cautious / disciplined than a human being
3) It is by and large safe to be in a jungle in a vehicle. However you have to respect the animals and maintain some distance. Especially mother elephants Iwith a baby elephant), Tigress (with cubs). All mothers are protective. The forest guide and the jeep driver are trained for above aspects
4) Chila entry gate of the Rajai National Park is just 6 t0 10 Kms from Haridwar. You can stay at any hotel in Haridwar. You will have to drive down in your car to the entry gate or take a taxi. Or you can stay at the forest rest house located at the entry gate to the forest. Or GMVN resort which is close to the entry gate. Or a couple of private resorts which are expensive.
5) It will be dusty and hot in summers. Cold and dusty in winters. Please plan protective layers for the child accordingly
6) There is no rest room / or anything for 3.5 hours of the safari. Please factor this aspect. Or you can ask the guide / driver to plan 1 or 2 hour safari only (they will take U-turn and come back (instead of comleting the full circuit
