Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Love shopping at Matahari when in Bali. Unfortunately the store in Kuta has shut down since Covid so took a trip to Denpasar to visit this store. Was not disappointed. Large assortment of shoes & men’s wear which is what we had come for. Only disappointment was there was no grocery department at this store.

Tagged along with my wife and our driver while she browsed, finally left them to their browsing and i headed elsewhere in the store. A bloke will struggle to find any garment bigger than XL or its equivalent, a shame as there were some stylish garments on display. Ditto the footwear department, doubt if anyone believed that a size 11EEE is made. Located the others, both similarly empty handed.

This place has been here a while as my hubby remembered it from a previous trip to Bali quite a few years ago.
We walked here from the Padma and it took about 30 minutes (with stops). It was so nice to shop in airconditioned comfort and they had so much on offer and the quality appeared to be quite good and with great prices.
I'm a bit of a bargain hunter at the best of times and the selection in all departments is amazing - so much so that it can become a bit too confusing as there is so much to choose from.
I ended up buying a handbag and my hubby brought some clothing. We really had no intention of doing any shopping in Bali as it was purely a rest and relaxation holiday that we wanted, but we are glad that we went.
I would recommend it to travellers. They don't 'bargain' so expect to pay the labelled prices (which are really good anyway).

A while back we went to Bali and had a great time. On the way back from a day trip we asked the driver to take us to Matahari Shopping Centre in Denespar. He took us to another Matahari store I think in another surburb. When we arrived we noticed that there was no other tourist their JUST US. Then our family group was surrounded by shady young boys. Us blokes all noticed that something was about to go down.We were about to get mugged and the girls bags we being eyed and they were slowly clsoing in.Even the counter people were watching us suspiciously. We got the kids and got out of there quickly. Could someone tell me if this has happened to them? And was it a suburb area we should not of been there? We had no problems of course in the Kuta Store.

Having shopped there several times, they have a large range of just about anything you want to buy in the way of fashion, house and accessories
Easy to navigate and has escalotors to top floor. Always plenty of staff around who are helpful and extremely well dressed.
Mens fashion was a stand out for me, and if you want to buy knick knacks as momentos of Bali without being harrassed to death by peddlars this is the place in central Kuta.
Prepare to be harrassed to death by peddlars outside the shop though.

Matahari is such a nice change from the hot and sweaty Bali markets that Bali is so famous for. It's over 4 levels in Kuta and will have something for everyone. Known brand names and also local brands at pretty cheap prices. Staff give you ticket slips and take your purchase to a cashier and you hand over your tickets at the register when you have finished shopping. They will then ring up your sale. Shoes are quite cheap, although not the most amazing quality. Shirts, shorts, caps etc are all pretty decent and there are plenty of discounted signs on the racks so you can get up to 50 percent off some items. The downside are some staff are a bit rude, many are very obliging. Also, don't forget sizes are Asian so you can be restricted in choice, particularly burly blokes. But you would be hard not to find something here.
Be careful of the security out the front when hiring a taxi. They try to negotiate a fixed price with the metred taxi and get a kick back.

You can get caught up with all the little shops in Kuta and Legian, all selling the same thing and you constantly trying not to get ripped off!
So it was a nice change to venture into a department store and know what you are buying is good, genuine quality items... no fakes here!
Yes, you could probably buy some items cheaper on some of the streets, however, shopping here is still cheaper than anywhere in Australia and as I said, no fake rubbish here.
So for those wanting to buy a good quality and yes, even name brands, look no futher than Matahari's...

Nice upmarket air-conditioned department store, a little like Myers but heaps cheaper. Loads of choice in shoes and bags. You can get cheaper on the streets but I think the quality is better here.

A great shopping centre down the road from Discovery Mall. This plaza has about 3 levels. I purchased some really nice costume jewellery, perfume from here. They also have handbags, clothing, makeup. MacDonalds just outside and some other big brand shops across the road. Well worth a visit.

You can buy almost everything you want in air conditioned comfort. The prices are set for people who don't like haggling in the outdoor markets. Prices are just about the same as you would pay in Australia. A good browsing place to escape the heat in Kuta.

Can you tell me the name of the photo shop where photos can be enlarged? I had some done a couple of years ago and know it's towards the back of the store but wanted to know the name/location of it. Thanks
