Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As other reviewers have previously posted, this is not a typical "western" pet shop. You can buy lots of pet supplies here including bird seed, collars and leashes, dog treats, pet shampoo, etc. You can also pick up a wide variety of live animals. Our guide said some of them are destined to be pets, while others will end up on someone's dinner table. I guess if you look at it from the standpoint that most of the meat that ends up on a dinner table was raised for that purpose, you can kind of understand it. There were a large variety of birds and lizards for sale. Some stalls had puppies and fish. There were lots of bats/flying foxes. Our guide said those were usually purchased for food and not as pets. One guy was selling monkeys for $35USD. This is probably not a tourist attraction that people will want to go to to just observe and is geared more towards the locals who own pets, or are looking for one.

Although this was an interesting place to see, it was also not very nice to see so many small birds crammed into small and mainly dirty cages. There were a a variety of other animals including reptiles and very young monkeys etc., mostly in rather poor condition and quite dirty conditions. Many of the birds etc were in poor health and do not think they would survive for long in those conditions. Most of the birds were obviously wild caught.

if you want to see squirrels, mice, rats, cats, rabbits and birds in cages then this is the place to go. Not very big and a bit awkward to find. Would not recommend unless nothing else to do.

We stayed in the Desmond’s village villas. Our villa had its own pool but rooms without could use the huge pool. Food good, service good. Small town with plenty of bars and restaurants as hotel in the Center. We organised a driver for the day before we went who we would highly recommend called Rido Romance Bali Travel He took us to the elephant sanctuary in Bali which was great, then we went to a fab beach Selong balonak beach, not sure if that wAS IN LOMBOK IT WAS beautiful with facilities for eating, shower and toilets. He was great, spoke good English and played us any songs on route. He is a singer with an amazing voice too. Very friendly and helpful. We also went to a waterfall which was amazing although many steps to reach. His name was Rido as he owned the company.

Ok most non locals won't necessarily like this place. You will see all sorts of animals and birds living in disgusting cramped conditions and scared monkeys. I was told a lot of these animals are poached from the wild and sold to locals.
The important thing to note is: even if we don't go, it will still exist. The market isn't really targeted at tourists or much of a tourist attraction. Most animals will be purchased by locals for their own reasons.
Instead I went keeping an open mind. It is sad to see the conditions of these animals but this is Bali so I respect the way they do things here. I was thankful that the locals are tolerant enough to allow tourists to 'trample' around the market their shops taken photos or expressing their disgust. They don't even charge a fee or ask for a donation!
If it's not for you don't go.

I was very sad to see in small cages all sorts of animals from baby monkey to lizards, painted chicks, caged baby owls or lemurs... it was really difficult to feel at ease and not cry as one can see the animals are really unhappy in there little cages. I won’t go again this is sure ...

Visiting the pet market made me realise how lucky we are in developed countries to have such a strict animal system. The cages were so dirty and small, they didn't even bother to take animals that didn't survive out of the cages. I saw birds and baby squirrels that had been left dead for so long their bodies were going through the wire in the cage. The amount of lizards they put in one cage is ridiculous... then when I looked closely I noticed over half of them were dead or about to die. I had nightmares for nights on end because of what I saw. I do not recommend animal lovers to go to this market because all you will think is how badly you want to save them all 😭
