My girlfriend wanted to pick up some fabric to bring home. Denpasar is a big city with lots of traffic, so you don't just zip in and zip out to Jalan Sulawesi. We made a list of things we wanted to see in Denpasar, hired a driver, and made a day of it. Lots of the shop owners spoke English, but having our driver along to help ask questions on our behalf helped. There are lots of fabric shops on this street, as well as the surrounding area, and they all kinda blended together after we entered the 4th or 5th one. They all seem to have pretty much the same fabrics, and none of them were selling it for substantially less than anyone else. The prices were definitely less than what we would pay in the US, but I'm not sure we would go out of our way to go through the hassle of getting to this location again. It's right across the street from Pasar Badung and you park in the same parking lot to visit both. If you are hitting one, you might as well stop at the other, otherwise I probably wouldn't recommend fighting all the traffic just to go fabric shopping here.

Both my partner and I love it. but we don't go just to look . Vanessa is looking for dupion silks , I find its great if you know what your looking for otherwise you get hypnotised and overwhelmed. We met Joab in number 93 as I recall. It was a joy. Born in Surabaya, then Geelong for a time. Gracious comes to mind . And all at a quarter of the price she would pay here in Tassie for her silk. If you love fabric its paradise. There is also a shop that sells jewellery findings and you can buy a "diamond" as big as the Ritz !

Definitely you need to head to Jalan Sulawesi Denpasar for the street of Fabric.
On one end is the Quilting Batic , on the other end is there is dress fabric. After a while it does tend to all look very similar and there are two sides of the street to look at . After two visits , one year apart, I have done one whole side ...other side for next year. Batik fat quarters at the end of the street are $1 , and $10 for a pack - all are printed out the back of the premises with amazing wood blocks. Beautiful Batik for $4 to $8 a metre that are divine! Take some water and prices are fixed from what I could tell.
Save some money for Alta Moda , 3 floor of fabric heaven.

This was my second trip to Jalan Sulawesi. Locals said there was nowhere in Denpasar to buy fabric other than the tourist sites where drivers take you automatically. But if you want what Europeans, Americans and Australians quilt with batik coton cap, you need to go to Madju right across from the traditional market at the end of the street. $2.50/metre and it's a large selection. I filled a small suitcase this trip!

i went to Jalan Sulawesi after reading reviews on here. And I wasn't disappointed. We had limited time as the driver on our day trip did a detour for me to come here. I made a beeline straight for shop 17 or 19 which were the two recommended. The staff were very helpful and it was so cheap. They had a fantastic range of batiks and jelly rolls ( which I didn't see until later as I got so carried away picking out all the fabulous prints) . I bought almost 4kg of fabric and could have bought so much more! Next time I will plan a longer trip and an empty suitcase to get more.

Say no to the helpers who hassle you on the way. I just said tidak terima Kasi politely and kept walking (no thank you)

Japan Sulawesi is a street full of fabric shops. The fabric is mostly for fashion (a lot of it is very beautiful stuff you'd make a ball gown out of) -- linen, silk, brocade, etc. I'm a quilter and went looking for 100% cotton. I would ask at the front of the store and the people would say "yes" or "no". Here are a few tips:
-I went on a Sunday at 10:30am and stayed for about 90min. The one store billed as a "quilting store" was closed
-some stores have set prices (these ones are generally staffed by women in head scarves) while the others require significant bartering.
-prices for a print should be about $2.60 Australia/Canadian per metre (26 000 rupees)
-the solids varied in cost depending on quality AND some were 1.5m wide so were more expensive. 30 000 rupees per meter was what I paid for decent quality cotton
-BEWARE of "helpers" on the street. They speak English, will come into a store (follow you, pretend they own the store) and drive the price up (and then get a kick-back from the owner). I told two people explicitly that I did not want their help. Each woman seems to have her own block/turf. There are fewer of these women the further down the street you go.
-my absolute favourite store was Anis Batik (anis_batik_bali@yahoo.com, Jl Sulawesi 27 Denpasar). Fixed prices, tons of cotton batik (and quite a few prints that read as more solid than the usual batiks (I don't like the tie-dyed look of most batiks). The women were lovely -- not at all pushy
-bring water, these little stores aren't air conditioned
-bring SMALL bills to prevent waiting for people to go to get change
-I had trouble getting a cab. Someone offered me a flat rate to where I needed to get to but it was easily a 20% mark up. If you can, call a cab to get you. I walked to a busier road and waited about 15min for a cab to drive by.
-many people on this string have spoken about Alt Moda -- I went by there and it's very fancy and not the sort of place to get cheap material for quilting.
-in all, I bought 10 different fabrics and am very happy.

it pays to know something about textiles before heading into the jungle of sulawesi st.
maju at 19 sulawesi has a huge and daily-changing stock of batik cottons and rayons. if you see something you love, grab it on the spot, because there is every chance it is a one-off.
the prices are very fair, the staff are very helpful and honest, and the owners really look after the horde of rescued cats that live in the back.
price for cottons in september 2018: 28,000 Rp/metre

a few doors down at dua lima 25 sulawesi, there is a great selection of pure linen and linen blends in various weights, down the back of the shop. prices are clearly marked and bargains are to be had. nobody hassles you.

my worst experience in 24 years shopping here on sulawesi st was this morning.
i was at murah dua and was sold some “100% linen”. when i went to pick it up to put into my own shopping bag, it was immediately apparent that the stuff was a slithery synthetic. i scrunched it repeatedly in my hand and it didn’t crumple or crease at all.
i then refused to purchase it and the owner became extremely irate and quite rude.
i am no expert, but i have been buying linen for thirty years, and i know how it feels. and i know how a synthetic feels.
to be fair, he had some lovely looking fabrics in murah dua, but synthetics are not my thing at all.

like everyone else says: parking is a nightmare. it isn’t the cleanest place you have ever seen. avoid the ladies who attach themselves to you to “help”....the prices go up. firmly and politely say no thanks and repeat yourself if you have to. try to get there at 9am when they open...it is a hot hell later in the day. take water. take your time...there is a lot to see.

Have visited Bali twice and both times went to Jalan Sulawesi. Have visited both Maju Batik (on Jalan Sulawesi) & CV Dewi Mas (on Jalan Gajah Mada).
Both shops are fabulous...the range of batiks is excellent.

A large number of jelly rolls, fat quarter packs, charm packs etc are available. Current prices are approx $2.60 to $2.70 a metre.

For those into sewing there is also another shop to consider for Sewing notions.

It is called Toko Central, Jalan Raya Kuta no 102.
It is a short taxi ride (15 mins?) from Jalan Sulawesi and you won't be sorry you made the trip....beads, threads, zips, buttons, bag clips and handles and any other sewing requirement/notion you are likely to ever need. It looks confusing but the staff are extremely helpful.

This place is quite full on.... Firstly they have different prices for locals and foreigners so I suggest you really try and barter them down a little..A lot of the stores have the same fabrics and its a matter of finding the best price.. I cant tell you how many times I have bought some fabric thinking I'd stumbled across something new only to find it cheaper several shops down.. It can get very overwhelming as there are so many shops all looking the same. I have only now become familiar with the area and found my favourites to deal with.. Good luck!!

Beautiful batiks for $2 U.S./meter. We went to Bali on a fabric tour and spent two days shopping at Sulawesi street. There are two main stores for good quality cotton Bali batiks and another store further down that sells beautiful cotton sarongs that can be used for quilting.
