The ladies out front that paint the pictures with the wax are amazing. I had a lovely picture drawn on my bag for the cost of a tip. Didn't like the guys who hover around and get you to go inside the big shop to buy the more expensive items, much prefer to browse myself.

Tohpati is widely known as the centre of handmade Balinese Batik with various colour and shapes. Here the visitors will be exhibited the Batik making and hand weaving process. Finally you can buy some to bring home. The specialties of Balinese Batik can be seen from the strong Javanese motifs; some of modern Batik applies the painting objects, such as Balinese culture, ceremonies, beautiful site, or mythological figures. Batik is one of the most beautiful wearable art and the approach to the other side of Balinese rich culture.

A good place to go if you are looking for some local handicrafts or some batik. Prices were good and the shops were clean.

My travel partner was very keen on getting some traditional batik fabrics, so a stop at the Tohpati Village was a must. Now was it so much of an actual village, not so much. It's a store, with a batik and weaving station in front of it that offers a tourist's view of the fabric being made. The store offered ENDLESS varieties of fabric, for any use you can imagine. Clothing, aprons, handkerchiefs, placemats, t-shirts, you name it! That being said, I did pick up 2 beautiful scarves I've worn several times since I got home.

enjoyed the demonstration at the front and appreciated the candle painting on my bag. Bought some lovely shirts for my husband. They had plenty of shirts in very large sizes. Helpful staff, but not pushy. Worth a visit.

Tohpati Village is located in Denpasar. It is an art & craft village famous for hand-weaving batik. Batik is the traditional art of painting a cloth or fabric using wax & dye. Dots & lines are drawn from the wax to decorate the cloth. It is a wearable art which is now getting very popular in the West.
Our tour agent brought us to a large centre in Tohpati Village. We were able to witness first-hand the process of making batik, from designing to waxing, giving colour & the drying process. Furthermore, you can also smell the batik process & it wasn’t a pleasant one!
Balinese batik is rather special because the designs are full of Balinese culture, mythological creatures & religious symbols. As for contemporary batik, the designs are usually drawn & tailored for traditional & formal wear. The price of a batik attire is usually dependent on the type of fabric used, the complexity & aesthetic appeal of the design.
Since the shop was full of expensive & quality batik products, we were unable to bargain & had left empty-handed.
For those who are adventurous to learn the art, there are many shops in the village that offer batik-weaving classes. The fee is usually inclusive of all required materials & you get to keep your art piece as a memento.

On a batik tour we came to watch traditional batiking....so it was interesting to watch! (I've seen reviews say it was forced on them - this was a choice for us!) Arranged ahead of time & paid for separately, the women painted SIMPLE wax designs on items we brought to them! They even gave us a small demonstration on dying the objects. Important to repeat and note: This was arranged by our tour ahead of time!
Our items were unique and we loved watching and learning from them! The shop had a lot of NICE items inside - fabrics, bags, children's clothing, etc. Good quality - not cheap batik.
