Lots of local restaurants beach front. Soft white sandy beach. There are rocks at low tide. Not crowded at all. Short walk down stairs from our resort, Lajoya. This was our favourite beach we came across on our time in south Bali.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 November 2023

The trip to this beach is a very pleasant journey, because before arriving at this beach we are given the atmosphere of a prairie area with limestone which makes an aesthetic view. When we get there, we are given a beautiful view from the top of the cliff which is used as an Instagramable photo spot by visiting tourists. In addition, a very beautiful sunset can be seen from the top of this cliff, making it a very beautiful view and a point of interest for this place.

Loved this beach. We had to pay 2k IDR upon arrival, which was okay. Beach was pretty empty, definitely not crowded like the one we’ve been before in Jimbaran. Had a nice walk until the far end of the beach, and we got two very comfortable beach beds for 50k IDR in total. The lady who owned the beds was extremely friendly and welcoming. We also got two coconuts for 25k IDR each. They were huge, full with nice sweet coconut water, and with a lot of coconut meat to eat. They were incredibly good. Spent the afternoon there, had an amazing sunset just in front of us. Before leaving, we paid 5k IDR to use the toilet of the nearest warung. It was clean, well kept, locked with a key so only those who pay the fee can use it. It was a great experience altogether. Plus, an amazing spot for Instagram photos!

Good but not perfect. Still building restaurants around and not hiden beach anymore in Bali.
Quite clean but still there’s plastics in some part of the beach.
You can surfing here, not so big weaves on the beach, and you can have personal bathub if you’re lucky. :D

A great place to relax and chill with family members. Stayed at Indah Balangan villa, wonderful pleasant place to recharged our energy. They provide bicycles and motorcycles which we rented to go to the beach. Which was very convenient for us as everything was available there.

Stayed nearby place and looked for a beach for kids swimming. Beach was full of trash and water was full of trash as well. No one cleaned the beach. Looked pretty rundown place. We noticed only one surfer and few people around.

Is BALANGAN the best beach on Bali?
Well Bali’s beaches are a step down from world’s best and Balangan certainly is far from perfect, but for a guy who has seen nearly every beach on the island in 20 visits/40years, I’d say it’s right up there. Maybe some of those small strips of silica you need to hop on a travelator from those $us300 a night cliff-top resorts on the south side of the Bukit Peninsula can beat it – but face it kemosabe, mere mortals like us won’t see them. And maybe for people who like big open beaches some parts of SANUR or GEGER/NUSA DUA SOUTH might do it.
But the thing is, I like compact but not tiny beaches tucked between headlands, with nice sand and good surf. Balangan has these. Okay, DREAM BEACH on Bali offshore island NUSA LEMBONGAN is similar – but has unruly surf and killer rip currents just about all the time: you really need surf skills unless you restrict yourself to shin-deep.
LOCATION – on the Bukit Peninsula. Look south from Kuta and the airport, the Bukit is that dominating limestone plateau. It’s coastline has beaches, particularly the coast facing north. Banlangan is the eastern most - 19km by road from Kuta: 17from the airport. Other nearby Bukit beaches/surf breaks – DREAMLAND (aka NEW KUTA BEACH) 3km, BINGIN 5, PADANG PADANG 7 and ULUWATU 9.
DESCRIPTION – a 500m long strip of silica between 2 headlands (east one has a fine view-point: west one is part of a limited-access golf course). It's fairly narrow – 40m at low tide but disappearing in front of the warungs (restaurants) on stilts which back the western half of the beach full tide. There is always sand at highest tide east of the warungs. The gradient of the beach is fairly steep – it’s not real easy to walk low tide because of soft sloping sand.
Off the sand in the water is a coral rock ledge – this is higher and broken up a bit in the west so be careful diving in off the sand at higher tide levels. If your visit coincides with the lowest tides of the month (around full moon and no-moon) you may find this rock exposed for an hour or two around lowest tide over the full length of the beach. Not much good for swimming but great for fossiking in rock pools etc. Note that just about ANY low tide (not just the month’s lowest) will expose these rock pools towards the western headland. A bonus: a real neat little mini-beach against this headland becomes exposed at low tide, ideal for people wanting seclusion. Another: it’s possible to walk around the bottom of the western headland to nearby DREAMLAND most low tides if the surf isn't huge. Possible but you still will get a bit wet.
Back on Balangan’s sand there are sun-lounges for hire eastern half of the beach. As the tide drops these rapidly appear in front of the warungs too. There is always plenty of room to lay a towel on the sand.
THE SURF – Balangan became famous as a surfers’ beach: it picks up swell nicely and is orientated so that big left hand breaking waves peal out from the western headland across the bay. Super fast point breaks like these are for experienced surfers although novices can hang around on the shoulder or inshore a bit and catch waves others have ignored. I’ve even seen learner classes in the broken water between the outside break and the beach.
Ordinary swimmers will find okay conditions off the sand on the eastern half of the beach anytime above quarter tide – in the west above half tide. Balangan has its fair share of currents and rips but is no worse than say Kuta and the good thing is there are always plenty of surfers in the water and watching from the warungs to rush to help. My experience of 35 years surfing many places is that surfers save more swimmers in trouble than lifeguards. No contest.
WHO GOES THERE
Back in the day hard-core surfers and some backpackers. Now we also have mid-range tourists looking for something a bit different. Visitors are spit between people staying at Balangan and day-trippers. The surfers have changed a bit too – many are returnees but age and income mean they now demand more comfort in accommodation.
ACCOMMODATION
Some of the old style basic budget surfers’ rooms in back of the warungs still exist, but a whole bunch of flash-packer-style bungalow joints featuring spacious huts, hot water, nice pools etc have opened up in the few lanes behind the beach. Look for BROTHERS, FLOWERBUD. LA JOYA, OCEAN VIEW and a few others on TRIP ADVISOR.
For high end travelers there are a few recently built villas appearing.
BEWARE – the area is getting a hell of a lot of new places over a wide budget range but many with Balangan in their names are up to 5km from the beach – consult SEVERAL* location maps to avoid disappointment.
*one popular booking site’s** maps have let me down on 3 occasions. **starts with A.
THOSE WARUNGS – about a dozen elevated restaurants line the back of the beach. Food prices are truly Bali budget and because surfers are good on the fang, portions are not small. These are very good spots to sink a beer or three around sunset – sit and watch the surfers committing suicide out on those super fast nasty point breaks while you sip a beer or three. As that orange orb sinks into the sea you just have to say…..”Sweet” and.... “Another beer please”
Have a good visit, gang.

First thing noticed here was all the sand. That is, the tide was out so the maximum amount of beach, made up of coarse rather than fine sand, was exposed. This went a long way out to a 'reef area' and beyond that were the waves. Not being a surfer at all it was even obvious to me that these waves were 'good' as there were plenty of surfers taking advantage of them. It was great just watching them do their stuff in such a lovely setting. Many were tourists but there were some locals as well. I did have a chance to talk to a couple of them who said this was considered one of the best beaches to surf at in Bali. There were places here to get 'local' meals and snacks (all quite cheap) and plenty of opportunities therefore to mix with the very friendly local traders. Certainly not as busy as Kuta and certainly worth a look.

Can u walk along the beach from Balangan to dreamland ??
If not, how long does it take to get there by scooter??
Written 14 March 2018
Sorry for late.. no u can’t as it’s not possible. Yes scooter is the best option for exploring Bali. And it supposed to take 15/20 min max either way.

I've only been to balangan beach and there is no coast road there. The drive is about 25mins from the main road. It's not a bad drive, smooth roads and enjoy the view

Kuta beach vs Balangan beach. which one to choose.
I half a day spare time in morning and half day in evening.
I am staying in kuta area
Written 19 August 2017
Both are white sand beach, the difference is Kuta Beach is very crowded, while Balangan Beach is not. Balangan is better for surfing and the sand is more clean.

Hi all
im planning to travel to Bali in December. As its the rainy season but im wondering if its still possible to enjoy a swim when its sunny during the day. i want to know how high the waves can be and if its safe to swim during this time.
thanks

Hi AKH
It depends on what beach you want to swim at. If you are swimming between Kuta and Seminyak, always swim where there is life guards and flags. Waves can vary on tide and weather.
If you are going to surf beaches like Balangan, I wouldn't go out to far unless you are a good swimmer.
