Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our driver took us to the Barong & Kris dance. We were really on time to choose a nice spot. If you have the change, sit near the fans, it helps you to stay 'cool'.

Before you can go in, you have to buy a ticket (100.000 IRP p.p. that's about €6,-). The ladies will reveive a small gift and you'll receive somee explanaion about the story of the dance.
We got one in Dutch, so that is really funny to read!

This show starts with music, it's nice to see how they play the music using traditional instruments.
The dance consists of 4 acts, all very colourfull and with beautiful dancing. You can see it as a play with music and dance but not as in a musical.

It is really nice to watch and with the explanation on paper, it's easy to follow.

This dance is for tourists, a fraction of the dance is done in tempels to ask the gods to enter the temple. This usually takes about 15 minutes tops. But here for the tourists they made a show for about 1 hour.

Please note: at the entrance they ask you if you want to make a picture with one of the dancers. We didn't do this, but I can imagine you do. Keep in mind that this will cost money.
Furthermore there is a toilet u can use, but keep in mind that this acoording balinese standards.

On a recent day trip in Bali our driver stopped off at the Barong & Kris Dance show, very interesting and enjoyable. The dance and music tells a mystical Balinese story.

Really enjoyable.

This was a complete waste of time and money.

I can't beleive I got up early on my holiday to go here. The driver told us it was a great cultural event. In other words he made a commission by taking gullible tourists like us there.

Within 10 mintues of this so called show starting, customers were already getting up and leaving. Most of those that stayed were already playing on their mobiles hoping that the end of this show would come quickly.

Thank God I had mobile reception which made the remaining 50 minutes bearable.

There is nothing cultural about this show. It is yet another tourist trap that drivers take people to as they would receive a small commission for it.

We were under the impression that we would be seeing traditional Balinese Dancing. Well we did, for about 3 minutes with the rest of the time watching a few grown men in dirty costumes running around the stage acting drunk.

This is one to avoid when your driver suggests it.

Started off wonderful with dramatic story told with fantastic costumes but slowly spoilt by music by michael jackson as actor dressed as monkey came on.later as the boar was killed he rolled over and his tail appeared at his front so actor rubbed it up and down then got his mouth on it and making noises.so so disgusted.children were in audience and I just cringed

Really enjoyed the dance although some of complaining about the entrance fee imposed....hehehehe...
It's a undeniable balinese cultural dance with the spiritual exposition to the public...the spacious theatre room with the grandstand viewing the stage performance. Visibility is sharp with the story telling handouts.

This was our first stop for Bali day tour which set us in a very disappointing mood. It was poor show purely staged for tourist who might have paid thinking they will experience a local cultural life. No such thing... best avoided...

So this is probably the biggest smack of local culture to the face you're going to experience first thing in the morning. The costumes were nice, the stage itself is stunning. The band will play the same song for an hour without skipping a beat and you will be impressed by that. You'll also become incredibly confused with the story played out in front of you, despite the print out with a brief explanation. You will initially be invested in trying to follow the story, then you will laugh at the cheeky jokes inserted, and eventually you will begin wondering how much longer til it's over. Go and watch this dance because it's a big tick on the cultural experience list, but don't centre your day around it.

The dance and costumes were OK.
Our issue was that inside the entrance where you pay & get your ticket, etc there's also a lady asking patrons to fill in a form as they have a weekly prize draw. Normally I don't go for these things, but as it was inside the building, figured it should be legitimate (big mistake). Next morning received a call to say that we had won this weeks 2nd prize of a weeks fully paid stay at local resort. All we had to do was come in for a visit to fill in the paperwork, they would send a car for us. When we got there, it was just one big telemarketing scam to try and get you to sign up for their hotel club package. Basically a big room filled with former second hand car dealers and other trapped tourists.
The reason why I'm judging this dance show harshly is because they allow this scam to go on at their show (and they presumably get a commission).

On arrival we were given a leaflet that explained the story depicted in the dance. This is necessary in order to have any chance of working out what's going on. The musicians were very entertaining - just watching their expressions and behaviour.
The performance was very interesting - colourful intricate costumes combined with dance, drama and humour. It reminded me of UK Pantomime with slapstick, the "it's behind you" moments and the sometimes bawdy humour.
Worth a visit.
