About
This small museum at the north end of Sanur Beach evokes a time of innocence and beauty before the introduction of relatively recent laws banning "immodest dress." Even more impressive than the paintings by the Belgian artist of the young Balinese dancer he married and her friends is the small mansion in which the art and artifacts are housed: a lovely example of Balinese architecture decorated with finely carved and gilded wooden shutters.

I live in Sanur and walk the beach most days, passing Le Mayeur museum every time I do, but I had never been inside before. I didn't know what to expect and kept open mind. I had however visited the Bali Museum at Jalan Mayor Wisnu in Denpasar. To be honest, Remco Koster's review of Le Mayeur nails it. By today's Western standards, this museum makes a very modest attraction. That said, I think it needs to be seen in context. It's the story of a Western painter who came to Bali before the advent of mass tourism and fell in love with a local Balinese woman. There's nothing earth shattering here.

This was rated highly in our Lonely Planet guide to Bali. We were disappointed. There was an absence of information on the artworks many of which did not appear to be well preserved and which may soon be lost if not better cared for. There was nobody around to answer questions and possibly the most interesting thing to me was the opportunity to see the inside of a traditional Balinese house. I think there is so much more which could have been done with what was a fascinating subject. One thing which I thought was off was that there was no consideration of the fact a 57 year old man married a 15 year old girl after knowing her for three years. The other thing is that you should take care to ensure you have gone to the toilet before you get there.

beautiful pieces of legendary artist home and gallery are not maintained well - that could be a significant place. managed by government? should be managed privately or by corporate to have quality, cleanliness and maintenance. so sad.

I first went to this museum about 30 years ago and I had really good memories of that visit, so I decided to return. I am so glad that I did - it is a really magical spot. You really get the "feeling" of the life of this artist - he had obviously travelled extensively and he chose to live on Sanur Beach! His work is stunningly beautiful. I would have love to have bought some prints. The museum is in what was his house, so it is quite small, with interconnected rooms. If you have any interest in art, do make the effort to visit this museum - you will find it a memorable experience.

The real purpose of our visit to this beach area was to visit the Le Mayeur Museum and view his works and collection of Balinese art and artefacts. One thing about Bali, the visitor seldom knows in advance if an attraction is closed for the day, even our driver was surprised as his grapevine had not given him any information. Disappointed, we headed back along the beach to enjoy some refreshments and to browse a few shops.

Had high expectations for this museum. I was really disappointed by the condition of this old seaside mansion. It's totally run-down, house falling apart, literally, dark rooms no fans, garden is not looked after at all. Such a shame for a historic place like this. With a 50.000idr entrance fee and prime location, you would think the government could do better.

Having read some of the previous reviews i was in two minds to either continue laying on the sun bed or going to see le mayeur museum
I am so thankful i decided to get up and go.
I have been travelling to Bali since 1980 so have seen the island change and develop over the years.
Today there is a lot less evidence of the real Bali around. The building has the most wonderful stone carvings around it along with wooden shutters that would have been a joy to look at every day.
The paintings yes some are faded but they are old and were part of the couples lives, so they would not have treated them like museum pieces, you still can get a real sense of the period of time and I thought his sketches were beautiful.
For a trip back in time and get a sense of how Bali looked its a must see .
So do get off that sun bed and take a look.

Sadly have to agree with the majority of previous reviews. Great art and story completely engulfed in neglect and lack of any kind of artistic standards, design or vision.
Potentially, with such a quality of product and story,a major upgrade of the buildings, presentation and a simple cafe could transform this sad testament to administrative inertia.

We visited this Museum a few years ago. It was very interesting to read about the artist and his wife and view many paintings ... most were in poor condition.
We visited again yesterday and were shocked to see the paintings and buildings had deteriorated even further. Some of the paintings had a glass box like structure placed over them but huge gaps existed between the paintings and the wall. The area in front of the paintings was full of dust and rubbish and some paintings looked as some insects had been eating them. Also some of the painted and carved areas of woodwork and doors etc were crumbling away or had eaten by insects such as white ants.
Maybe on the beautiful island of Bali, renowned for its art, there may be some artists, art restorers or even people from Belgium who could initiate some restoration projects to save the building and contents.

The Balinese government/ tourist board should really take more pains to take care of this gem hidden among the stalls along Sindhu Beach. Such a rich and provoking history that can be seen through the art, photographs and furniture left behind by the artist Le Mayeur and his wife Ni Pollok.
Admission is at 20000 IDR (as of Feb 2016). The place can be extremely hot and humid, which obviously affects the artwork as well, hastening its decomposition.
Some paintings have become old and faded, but the furniture with their intricate etchings and carvings, as well as the architecture are all worth a view.

Whereabouts is it in terms of location? What's it near?
Written 17 February 2015
at the north end of Sanur just past the Bali Beach Hotel
it is a lovely walk as the avenue is wide and tree shaded or you can ride a bike - my husband usually hires one for the month so rides everywhere but I like to walk
