I saw this Legong dance show in Ubud Palace, which starts at 7:30 pm, and is supposed to be 1.5 hrs long, but in reality it was just over an hour long. You can get tickets on the spot or online via GetYourGuide. Come an hour early to get good seats. Its really important for you to be able to see the fine movements of the dancers' hands, fingers, feet and their facial expressions. Sitting at the very front is best, but half an hour before the show the first 2 rows were already full. The dancers and musicians are all very skilled, and the costumers and makeup gorgeous. The dancing is very interesting, a lot of choppy movement of the hands, feet and neck, some terrified/scary facial expressions and winking was observed. The music is kind of repetitive and annoying but oh well. Taking of photos and videos is allowed during the performance. However, there are no photo op opportunities with the dancers before or after the show, and there is no gift shop. There are bathrooms on site, and vendors selling soft drinks, beer, water etc. Make sure to put on mosquito repellent prior to coming here. There are many places to shop and eat around Ubud Palace before or after the show and getting a taxi is very easy. Many drivers will approach you to see if you need one, especially in you stand near the taxi/ride share pick up/drop off area across the street from the palace. Definitely a worthwhile event to attend to during your stay in Bali due to its uniqueness.

Wonderful dance performance, done with so much love, commitment and devotion by a huge number of participants. Organization was great, since there was a covered area once it started to rain. A must see/do in Ubud !!

After reading so many negative reviews I have to wonder if I saw the same dancers the
reviewers saw. As for 100,000 Rupiah....for those who haven't been to Indonesia, that was $10
American. I visited a month ago and now it's around $8. The dancers I saw performed for well
over an hour...at night, but still fairly warm...and humid. I was mesmerized by them. I do tend
to forget where I came from while on vacation and embrace the culture I am with. I don't want
to go to Bali and see MacDonald's. If "you" do, just stay home. These dancers were superb!
I had been invited to a Kechek Dance, but it didn't start for an hour. Meanwhile I took in the
Legong at the Ubud Palace. I stayed until it ended because it was fully taken in by the dance
and those who performed it. I went back to Bali several months later and made it a point to see
it...and them.....again. The dancers practice for years, maintaining their part of a wonderful and
peaceful culture. They perform for you wishing to portray that culture....FOR YOU! If "YOU" are
the product of some "westernized" holier than thou culture....why don't you stay home and share your misery with your neighbors. Don't bring it to a people who have more sense than "YOU"
do. Please...leave them alone! They don't need your spin on the world. Chances are your
culture is part of the problem the world is miserable along with you!

While the dancers are beautiful and talented no one warned me that a baby chicken would be killed at the end of the dance! i couldnt believe it. This upset me and my daughter so much. The killing is justified as 'part of the culture'. I don't thing cultural beliefs are an excuse for animal cruelty and if I had known I certainly would have not paid to see this. Cultural or not I think this needs to be pointed out so those who are ethically and morally opposed to an animal being killed for entertainment can chose to not attend.

We saw the Legong and Barong dance performance at the Ubud Palace right downtown. Since it was raining a bit on that night, and we were late, we grabbed a taxi and got to the venue early, luckily, because we were able to get a front row seat. I had never seen Balinese dance before and knew almost nothing about it so the performance was a delight. Everything was new and unexpected. The colours of the costumes and makeup of the dancers and musicians were fabulous, and each time the scene changed and new characters emerged, I was enchanted.
Rather than one continuous story, the evening involved several different dramas. The Legong dance, a historical 13th century romance, features pre-pubescent girls; the Barong dance a lion-dog creature representative of good, manipulated by two actors, duelling with a monkey; and the finale a story from the Mahabharata of two giants, Sunda and Upasunda, a beautiful goddess, her attendant nymphs, and two clown-like figures whose purpose was unknown to me. The movements of the dancers, both women and men, are highly stylised, and include fascinating eye, head, and hand movements. While the womens’ movements are graceful and sensuous, the mens’ are more angular and sharp, meant to indicate strength and power. The Barong was very humourous and reminded me of a sasquatch or abominable snowman-like figure, as well as our dog Brubin when he plays grass alligator. Accompanying the action was a gamelan orchestra and a male narrator who voiced all the parts, which must have been exhausting for him! This spectacular performance is highly recommended.

We also saw another version of the Legong and Barong dance at the temple right next to the football field on Monkey Forest Road, thjis one with an orchestra composed entirely of women and without any narration - also fantastic. As I remember, the cost for tickets was 75,000 IDR. You can buy the tickets in advance or at the door on the evening of the performance.

I attended the Legong and Barong Waksirsa Dance at Ubud Palace last night. The show is every night at 7:30 pm and you can just buy tickets from folks standing outside the palace doors. 100 IDR a person. The show is just over 90 minutes and has a huge cast of dancers and musicians.
I got there around 6:50pm and it was already about 2/3rds full so you need to get there pretty early for front row center.
The costumes were great and some of the dances interesting, but overall it was a bit long and boring with a bunch of dialogue at the end in Indonesian that was impossible to follow. Still, it's worth seeing.

I went to the show last night and I enjoyed it a lot.
I bought my ticket from a ticket seller guy next to Ubud palace when I came to town in the afternoon. I arrived at the show at 7pm and I still got a very good seat at the second row of chairs so I could see well and also take some nice photos and videos.
I enjoyed the show and I didn't find it boring or to slow. The motions are repetitive but the scenes change every 15-20 minutes so you can always see something new. I liked the costumes and the music as well. I just wish that the narration was available in English as well because I could not understand anything from the balinese text.
I recommend going there and watching the show. Arrive early and take mosquito repellent with you.

I found it terrible, offensive and just downright a tourist trap. What a waste of time. It s bunch of old men, doing a really rendition of a I don't even know what you call it. This dance is obsessed with penises and even though I have no kids and certainly not a prude I would caution parents wanting to take their kids there. It is an utter waste of time, boring, inappropriate oh and did I say boring....yes DULL!!!!!!

Seeing a Legong or Barong dance is a must do if you are in Bali. It will introduce you to the gamelan music, dance where movements are inspired by the nature (palm trees, animals) as well as traditional activities (e.g., weaving), and exquisite costumes.
The performance is at the Palace - a gorgeous location. Be there earlier though to get a good seat. The dance starts at 7:30 pm, I would recommend arriving about 45-60 min before and purchasing the ticket from the front entrance. At the time of my trip (Nov 2019), the cost was 100,000 IDR.
