It takes approximately 3 hours from Jakarta to Bogor. Enter the "Taman National Gunung Halimun Salak", park your car underneath "curug ngumpet" (ngumpet waterfall; "ngumpet" means hiding in bahasa). There is fee for entering the national park and you can ask for park ranger to guide you to the crater (just give him tips later). Hiking will takes 2 hours or more depend on your pace. Its better if you start hike in the morning, wear long sleeve shirt and mountain shoes. The terrain will be dirt, rocks and involve small river crossing. Prepare for everything. DO NOT CAMP ON THE CRATER AREA. Toxic gas might have an effect on you. But its a great adventure, i guaranty.

Before we set off I didn't know what to expect, the hike went on for a while up different terrains so if you go make sure you wear suitable footwear. It took us about an hour and a bit to get up to the crater and less time to get back down. As I mentioned I did not know what to expect until i smelt sulphur.. we got to the top of the trail and the views were incredible. Accompanied by our tour guide we also went to a waterfall on the way back that was well worth the visit.

Kawah Ratu (The Queen Crater) is located at 4.5 KM point along the hiking track to Mount Salak. My hiking point started from Halimun-Salak National Park, Gunung Bunder, Pamijahan – Bogor. It took me 3 hours to hike through rocks, mud, and streams, to finally reach the crater. The crater actually consisted of many small craters. The steams coming out from those craters, made a sound like the crashing waves ~ gave an eerie ambiance; craters inside a dense rainforest, but sounds like a coastline.

The hike was demanding, because of the rain in the previous night, so the lichen-rocky route was wet and very slippery. But it was delightful, since I was entertained by different flights of birds – singing and chirping, from beginning to the end track. And boy, I was so lucky this time! There was even a troop of Java Owa monkeys performing acrobatic jumps, up high on the trees; very refreshing.

Clean water (drinkable) was available at streams along the trek, but only before the last 1 KM sulfuric area.

Remind to wear a proper hiking boots if you’d like to do this track, otherwise, the challenge can be too much.

The National Park entry fee is only IDR 10,000/person.
Trekking guide is available at IDR 200,000/pack.

Located at Mt. Salak and can be reached from three different location and I took the shortest path but still take some time to get it.

You enter a typical tropical forest, and you will find a lot of trees and heard the gurgling of water flowing from the water source up there it was beautiful melody for me.

After 2 hours walking then we reach the first crater and we smell of sulfur is very stinging, do not rest in a low-lying area, at the in active crater, especially if it is in the valley is very dangerous. Find the higher location to have some rest.

10 minutes after we reach the active crater, it beautiful...

The place is very fascinating. It has a good scenery and not-to-difficult track. The track is full of rocks and in some part is full of water which come from the river. We have to use a propper shoes since to avoid twigs, mud, stone and leeches.

It takes 2-3 hours walking until we reach Ratu Crater. And you will see the good damn beautiful view.. I will be back here again someday..

We hiked to this amazing crater as part of a 3 day/2 night tour of the wonderful and gorgeous Halimun Salak National Park with our guide Pak Adang. The hike was about 9 km round trip and it was not easy as much of the path is wet and muddy and requires lots of navigating over and through streams on rocks, some precarious. Having the proper footwear is essential. Water shoes or Tevas are recommended as sneakers are likely to get wet and super muddy. It is Indonesia after all. The destination is well worth the effort with incredible views of the very large crater with many places where steam is coming out of the earth and other areas with bubbling super hot water. There's a stream that runs through the middle of the area where you can bathe. The water was surprisingly cold. The whole journey took about 4.5 hours which included about an hour at the crater.

Our guide had a nice lunch for us up top as well that included grilled chicken, tempe, veggies, potato pancakes and corn fitters. While hiking, we learned about indigenous nuts, spices, fruit, trees, leaves, and birds from our knowledgeable and incredibly generous guide, Pak Adang (Adang Ecotourism Halimun Salak National Park). I am happy to share his contact information with anyone interested (message me via TripAdvisor). I highly recommend this trip.

I visited this place usually if I want to escape from Jakarta City. A day trip would be enough. Usually I start trekking from Pasir Reungit in the morning, around 2 - 3 hours trekking depends on your pace. Kawah Ratu is a beautiful site where you can see the active crater from short distance.
