Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I came here not knowing much about here. My guide was fantastic and spoke great English informing me about everything and taking some good photos. It's a lovely old building worth going to in Solo.

Having lived in Bali for many years, it is nice to see how other indonesia palaces look like. Pura Mangkunegaran's main structure which is the Joglo (javanese open air wooden structure) is said to be the largest joglo in Indonesia. What is nice is not only the guide explained on the history of the royal family and the palace, but also the philosophy behind every part of the structure. I can not imagine how grand the settings was 200 years ago. I was also lucky to meet the oldest "abdi dalam" (servants of of the royal family) who is now 96 years old and still doing her task of making offerings in the palace! I think it is one of the must-visit!

Highly recommended to understand the long history of the Solo Prince. We were guided by the local guide at the palace who shared lots of interesting information about the palace and its grounds. Good collection of artifacts and very well maintained grounds. Lots of family photos including the current Prince and his family. We had a homely feel at the palace.

This is the smaller of the two palaces in Solo but we decided to visit this one as I read that it is in a better condition than the main Kraton. We payed 18,000Rp entry, plus gave a tip to our English speaking guide who showed us around the palace grounds and exhibits.
It was interesting to learn about the history of Solo and its royal families, plus to see batik, old coins, swords, bohemian crystal, chastity belts and gifts from other countries etc.

I went here and bought a ticket for 20,000 to see the museum. But they force you to come with a guide. If you do not pay 50,000 more for a guide you cannot go inside even if you bought a ticket. It seems like it is an extortion. Picture of woman doing this:

I was visiting Pura Mangkunegaran last year with my friends. I really surprised that Pura Mangkunegaran from the outside not like Keraton, more private for people. I forgot how much we have to spend for entering this place, but thats not included tourist guide. Our tourist guide is Febry, student of senior high school who took hospitality major. She was so helpful to giving us information about the Pura Mangkunegaran. Sort of dissapointed because we can't met Gusti Paundra, hahahhaa... Indonesian people must known him. He is the son of Sultan Surakarta. He looks nice, humble not like other people who has position or money. This Pura Mangkunegaran not only has javanese culture ornament, but also some European ornament as a gift to former Sultan long time ago. Visit this place is very delightful for people, family, and especially for you who love the tradition and Indonesian culture and heritage.

It is best to visit this keraton in group and asking for a guide. You'll miss lots of important details by only sight seeing the objects. The guides could give you fascinating story behind what you see such as the song written by keraton prince that brought by Voyager 1 to outer space.

Entrance ticket is IDR 10K for locale and 20K for foreign tourist. They offered guide who'd patiently explain about every inch inside the Keraton. Cameras are allowed except for meditation area (will ne noticed by the guider later on).
Short trip, cheap but expanding your knowledge about Surakarta.

This pura Mangkunegaran is heritage of Solo City. It was the palace of the King Mangkunegaran and now became the museum. In working days it is open until 2 PM.The palace is clean and fairly maintained. The parking space is spacious. Must visit if you come to Solo.

Not too bad. The palace guide is very friendly and funny and she patiently explained each and every decor, occassion, etc in detail. But no sleeveless tops. Bermudas and slippers are still acceptable. Then when you entered the palace, shoes must be removed, but the guide provides us with plastic bags to put in our shoes and to be carried everywhere we go.
It's an informative and fun trip.
