The majority of item sold in Pasar Atas is clothing, especially woman and children. You can also find T-Shirt of Bukittinggi here, keychains, and some other souvenir.
Other than that, there are also section that sell West Sumatra's snacks, such as Kripik Balado (Cassava crackers with chili), Smoke Eel, and many more.
A must try is Nasi Kapau, It is Padang-style Rijstafel served with selection of dishes, such as eggs, chicken, and Tambusu (Intestine filled with egg).

Pasar Atas (market on upper side of the hill) is basically selling souveniers and other genral items like dresses etc. It is a busy market in Bukittiningi which always remians crowded, more because of narrow lanes of the market. From here you can buy memories of this trip. But you must know and be able to guess the actual price and bargain; otherwise you will end up paying twice or even thrice of the price.
There is another market - Pasar Bawa ( market on the lower level of the hill). This is a traditional market, selling basic need like groceries, fruits, vagitables, and things like that. This is also a crowded and busy market, more because of narrow lanes.
Good to roam around just to have a feel of the local markets.

I always like to visit the local markets to have authentic local experience.
This market was crowded but fun. We bought some souvenirs and gifts (but must bargain hard) and had lunch at one of many nasi kapau stalls in the market.

Another busy market but interesting layout, goes around in circles then a grid in different levels. The middle one has good food stalls including the famous nasi kapau. Shops mostly sell the same things (shoes, watches, bags, batik clothing and tourist tops) so bargain hard, although prices are already dirt cheap. The slippers are a main selling feature that I haven't seen elsewhere in Indonesia, bought one for 20k without haggling hard at all, so I'm sure you can go cheaper. Also found a couple of nice stalls selling bika and a sort of pandan rice crepe!

Pasar atas has all the varieties of embroidery(sulam) and you will need to bargain to get a good price. If you feel that its, expensive, you can just walk away.
Tips of buying your materials is, you need to ask the length of the material, because I didn't know about this. When I am already back in KL, I found out that the material is only 3meteres long for a 60" material and only 3.5 meteres long for a 45" material. :(
But, this is the place for you to shop your materials in BUkit Tinggi, and you don't need to buy anything along the way to Bukit tinggi (Your driver will stop at shops along the way) because all the things can be bought in Pasar Atas for a better price!
P/S : To enter this place, you will need to climb a flight of stairs, but for me, It was quite difficult as we had a stroller and travelling with 2 infants.

When I first got to Pasar Atas, I felt a bit suffocated by the narrow alleys and the big crowd. The ground floor of Pasar Atas houses shops selling shoes, music CDs, souvenirs and etc. I climbed the stairs to the first floor and thankfully it was a different atmosphere. There were not that many people and the shops are all organized. First floor houses shops selling fabrics of different types. I had quite a shopping spree here buying embroidered fabrics. Since there are so many shops, it was quite hard deciding on one to enter. Even after entering one, I had a hard time deciding on what to buy since there are plenty of options to choose from. Bargain is a must if you want to get the best price. I don't know if it's just me but I found the sellers here were more willing to lower the price significantly than those sellers in Bandung and Jakarta. If you are looking into buying embroidered fabrics, be sure to get one called 'Sulam Peniti' as it is a type of embroidery which originated from Bukittinggi.
