This place is a true wonder. We stayed more than an hour and it just was amazing every second. Not only due to the amazing and changing colours of the minerals in the impressive rocky sides of the craters, also due to the scenery, of course the immense lakes and their colours. It also is the energy that surrounds it, the atmosphere (providing other visitors shut up:)). Absolutely one of the most amazing and wonderful places we have been to. We didn’t go with sunset. We came there around ten thirty am.

I have heard the name of Lake Kelimutu since I was a child, so glad I was able to visit it in 2019.
Never regret, a unique place, not too difficult to reach.

Kelimutu volcano is located 50 km east of Ende, central Flores on a road that climbs through several small villages and rice terraces into a dense rainforest near the summit. The volcano is in a national park, and there is a fee to enter: not much for locals and foreign Indonesian work visa holders, and more for tourists (about US$15). From a parking area a few hiking trails go up to the summit, which features 3 steep-sided craters with actively roiling multi-colored lakes. On a clear day you can see gases bubbling to the surface and a sulfide scum on the surface of the first two lakes. The local lake names are Tiwu Ata Bupu (Lake of Old People - blue), and the other two lakes, Tiwu Ko'o Fai Nuwa Muri (Lake of Young Men and Maidens - bluish-green) and Tiwu Ata Polo ("Villany" Lake - red) are separated by a shared crater wall. The lake colors are attributed to gas & steam vents on the bottom of two of the crater lakes that discharge CO2 and H2S gases from a magma chamber deep beneath the mountain. The lake colors change throughout the year due to different chemical oxidation and reduction reactions between rain water, ground water, the amount and composition of the rising volcanic gases, and the abundance of iron and manganese. The colors in the lakes change independently from each other, suggesting that each crater lake has its own unique connectivity to the underlying magma chamber.

We stayed at Bintang Lodge in Rueteng which is close to Mt Kelimutu as we have to get up at 4-5am in the morning in order to reach here before sunrise. It was pitch dark and you do need to bring a head light or flash light. We walk and hike w/our guides. We thought we were the only one hiking here in the dark. By the time we reach the summit there were many people sitting and drinking hot tea (available by the vendor) and waiting for sunrise. All sunrise are beautiful but when the sun touches the crater it changes color. Nice to be here. Just the annoying ticket - paying double for foreigner.

This was a very good activity. It's a nice walk (as long as you're able to walk stairs) and there's a nice view over the lakes.

Would highly recommend this.

We went very early in the morning (4am), the temperature is nice and you'll be up before sunrise.

We left Moni at 4 a.m. and arrived at the parking area at 4:30 and made it in time for the beautiful sunrise. This place is truly special, both for the natural beauty, the belief by the local people that this is where souls go when they die, and the macaque monkeys that come around.

We love this place so much! We slept in moni and we drive to kelimutu (20 minutes by car).We arrive on the top with a very easy and short walk (30 minutes) in the early morning, 6 am (too early)
There is a kind of shop with coffee tea water and food.
We waited more than 2 hours for the fog to go away, which is the real show. The 3 lakes are really beautiful. the light is better after 10. It is pretty cold and windy so take a wind stopper with u. On the top the woman sales tea and hot coffe.
If u are lucky u can see the sunrise and the monkeys

We enjoyed this but it was incredibly crowded at the top and absolutely freezing with a biting wind. Take hat and gloves and warm jacket! This slightly took the edge off it as my hands virtually froze! Beautiful lakes and views.
