Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Me and my friends are visiting Sembalun with Jung Rinjani. He show us the best places to visit in the area, totally worth to take a tour with him cause he literally put big effort for making us comfortable and feel save while exploring, plenty of hidden gem that probably you can’t find yourself without him. Highly recommended!

We had such a phenomenal tour guide Abu and a driver, I think they come in package. Not only a caring and knowledgeable but has such a wonderful personality.
I would highly recommend going with him for Sembalun Localtour

This village is truly special. Situated on the slope of mount Rinjani and is surrounded by so many stunning mountains, Sembalun offers a breathtakingly incredible view. Sunrise and Sunset are equally amazing from this village. During the day time you can immerse yourself into the beautiful scenery of Mount Rinjani, scenic Paddy fields and all of the other mountains in this area.
This village is also a home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Lombok such as; Mangku Sakti Waterfall, Mangku Kodek waterfall, Umar Maya and Dewi Selendang.
When in Sembalun, do not forget to trek any of the mountains for an even more beautiful view.
Words can't really describe how beautiful this place is. Please check out some pictures attached.

We had the pleasure to do the 3D2N trek with Full http://www.fullrinjani.com and a great team of porters. And although it was probably the most exhausting experience in our whole life, we were so glad and thankful for the chance to climb Rinjani. We’ve been taken care of around the clock and everyone was super friendly and very nice. To our surprise, we even got a fresh fruit shake every day and the food was just delicious.
I can definitely recommend taking the tour with Full. It’s awesome!

We had been on a lovely one-month trip around Indonesia until we unfortunately ran into Atta's Travel. On our last few days on Gili Meno we saw signs advertising the Rinjani Trek and popped into a few agencies to find out information and pricing. We spoke to a few and even though it was more expensive we believed that Atta's Travel would be the best....
We were assured by Atta's Travel that they would provide the adequate equipment as we had only brought beach wear and all our scuba diving equipment to Indonesia. My girlfriend was pretty nervous about doing the trek but Tina constantly assured her and told us that they would provide all the necessary equipment for the hike up and for the very low temperatures. She repeatedly guaranteed us that hiking boots, warm clothes, jackets and waterproofs would be available to us at the start point and were included in the price.
When we arrived at Senaru people were quickly rushed off to start the hike. We inquired about the equipment and the staff went into their store room and brought out a plastic bag of old trainers and a couple of pairs of small hiking boots. It was immediately obvious that we had been duped and would not recieve the promised clothing. I asked for boots that fitted but was told my feet were too big (UK size 10) my girlfriend (EU size 36) was also out of luck. There also wasn't any warm clothing either. I really wouldn't have minded if the sales rep, Tina, hadn't consistently promised us that they were a reputable organisation offering all the necessary equipment. We gave them our money under completely false pretense, we were not equipped to do the trek comfortably as promised.
To make matters worse they REFUSED to give us our money back.
After waiting 4 hours for Atta to arrive we were told that we would receive 50% of our money for cancelling the trip. After having a finger pointed in our faces, sneered at and told we would be killed (!), I had to run to neighbouring guides to ask for help and the use of their phone - Atta finally agreed to give us our money back. We were so relieved that we could finally get away and finish our holiday. On leaving we received more threats ('Watch your money for thieves' 'Go back to your own country!' - Mr Atta's wife Tina is English?!?) and on agreeing a fee with a taxi driver Mr Atta's staff warned the taxi drivers not to take us out of Senaru. We had to begin our walk down to the main road where many REAL friendly Indonesians were happy to offer their service and take us to Mataram.
It was all a completely HORRIBLE experience and I hope nobody else has to experience what my girlfriend and I did. Choose a good tour company and avoid Atta's Travel at all cost.

The hike up to the summit of Rinjani is one of the toughest I have ever done in my life ( I have trekked in Nepal and Bhutan, although more of a beginner-mid level trek) and I would say this trek will even test both physical and mental strength of even the most experienced trekkers out there. No, this is NOT a beginner friendly trek. Having said that, even a first time hiker can do this tough hike provided that:
1) do not underestimate the difficulty of this hike as this mountain has claimed many lives before
2) have at least a good level of physical fitness to at least reach the crater rim, not the summit, the crater rim
3) your resolve will be tested again and again while hiking this mountain so you also need good mental strength
4) not being scared of heights certainly helps too!
5) well prepared for the hike (wear good hiking shoes with plenty of ankle support, bring hiking sticks if you find them helpful, definitely bring head torches, wear warm and windproof clothing, use sunscreen, travel as light as you can)
There are 2 starting points for this trek: Sembalun and Senaru. I went from Sembalun and returned to Sembalun as well. A few points about both starting areas:
From Sembalun:
- If your main goal is to reach the summit or at least the crater rim, it is highly recommended to start from Sembalun as it is closer
- Allow at least 2 nights, one night to reach Pelawangan Sembalun ( campsite before the ascent to the summit), one night to go up to the summit and down to Sembalun. Your aching legs will be extremely grateful
- There are 4 main rest areas before you reach the summit: Pos 1 (you can skip this if you wish and go straight to Pos 2), Pos 2 (you will have your lunch here), Pos 3 ( rest well here. From this point, things get much steeper and harder), Pelawangan Sembalun (campsite before the ascent to the summit). It takes approximately 8 hours to reach Pelawangan Sembalun from Sembalun starting point.
- You can reach the summit much faster from Sembalun however at a cost. As mentioned above, the ascend from Pos 3 to Pelawangan Sembalun is very steep and at certain points quite slippery. You will need to be strong physically and mentally.
From Senaru:
- I did not start from Senaru but after listening from my guide and others who have attempted this before, it is preferrable that you start from Senaru if you want to reach both the crater lake and the summit
- Takes approximately 11 hours to reach the crater lake from Senaru starting point
- The ascend and descend from the lake to Pelawangan Sembalun to reach the summit is infamous for its extremely steep path that requires your full concentration. My guide says most falls occur here.
The hike to the summit:
- You start from Pelawangan Sembalun at 2-3AM. Some people start later, but if you have to see the sunrise, then the 2-3AM start is your best chance to catch the sunrise. The starting path to the summit is very difficult and this is the test to gauge your resolve as the path is steep and slippery due to black loose sand. Once you get past the first part, the middle portion of the hike along the crater rim is easier but care must still be taken as you are practically hiking along relatively narrow path with certain drops to your death on either side. The final ascend to the real summit is the most difficult as the path is very narrow, very slippery and very steep. Most people give up here or stop at the point before the final ascend.
However, even if you do not reach the summit, the crater rim still affords you with a truly epic and breathtaking view of the crater lake, the new volcano called Gunung Baru, which is still active and can erupt anytime by the way, and when you are near or at the summit, you can even see the island of Bali and Sumbawa. You will feel like you are ants among giants and clouds. You will be very tired and your legs and feet will sore and ache very badly, but once you see the epic landscape and scenery, you'll feel all that effort you have put beforehand is definitely worth every drop of sweat and tears. An epic journey of a lifetime.
Oh and don't forget your cameras! Fantastic photo opportunities here.

I checked online and found Full Rinjani was recommended as I wanted to climb Rinjani with my adult children. We were very satisfied with this trekking company. Full Rinjani recommended starting at Sembalung and that we should do a 4 day 3 night package which cost 2,600.000 each. For this we had a guide and 4 porters and the equipment was in good condition. We had cooked meals which were excellent especially considering everything had to be carried. All the water we drank was bottled although the guide and porters drank spring water. It would be very hard to do this trek at short notice as you really need good equipment like waterproof jackets, hiking shoes, head torches, warm fleeces as it gets cold camping at these heights and it was wet too.
Yes the litter is an eyesore but I contracted with Full Rinjani to bring down the litter and they did. The trek is very very challenging but if you take the the 3 night and 4 day package it's more reasonable. Otherwise it would be extremely difficult due to the steep climbs especially the second day. Our guide was Lim and he was really careful to take care of us well and carried one of our bags the first day when he saw it was tough for us. The porters were amazing carrying the baskets on their shoulders and clambering up steep slopes in just slippers. All in all it was a very tough trek but very worthwhile!

We booked our Rinjani trek in Attas Travel office in Gili Meno. Mr. Atta is really nice, helpful and competet man, always trying to find the best solution for your. (He also provides a lot of others tours and transports - komodo, flores etc.) He arranged us transport from Gili Meno to Senaru on Lombok and also tranport after the trek to Kuta Bali. EVERYTHING JUST GREAT AND WITHOUT PROBLEMS!
The trek was awsome, nice and experienced guide, good porterts, a lot of food and water. It was all perfectly organised.
After the trek, we went to Senggigi to fast boat and then to Kuta bali in a shuttle bus provided by a fast boat company. We didn't have to do almost anything on our own, everythnig was arranged by Mr. Atta.
So, if you have a possibility to do the Rinjani trek with Attas Travel, don't hesitate and do it with Attas Travel!

hello people
I totally agree with you that on such adventures, the right travel agents either make it or break it for you. I read the recommendations by Rinjani National Park and am wondering which travel agents you found to be positive?
Thanks for your help
